Here is a garden for discussing the story The Forest of the Unicorns in English.

The idea is that the story is written in French in the past historic tense.

Yet first, some of us will need to learn or relearn the past historic tense.

Perhaps some others who know will remind us please.

You could say that.

Oreo

I thought this thread was some kind of joke, maybe it is?

The op wasn’t known for his sense of humour 😩

Bellanonna Mon 12-Feb-24 15:00:48

Crikey, I’ve just seen how old this thread is. Please ignore my comment Callistemon.

MissAdventure Mon 12-Feb-24 15:02:06

The OP had a wonderful, dry sense of humour.

Recollections may vary …

This poster went by other names😬

MissAdventure Mon 12-Feb-24 15:20:59

As do other posters.

MissAdventure

As do other posters.

I think this one caused rather a lot of trouble😡

BlueBelle Mon 12-Feb-24 18:25:30

Yes MissA I got on well with the poster but others didn’t see him in the same light same as Rufus over in Australia

MissAdventure Mon 12-Feb-24 19:08:51

Oh yes, Rufus was a game old boy, wasn't he? smile

Marydoll Mon 12-Feb-24 19:13:56

That was a blast from the past. I did a double take when I saw the OP's name!

Il commença à m'énerver. Il ne voulut pas manger mes plâts du jour. 🍖 🥩 🛳

Bellanonna Mon 12-Feb-24 19:38:51

He was possibly vegetarian, Joseann?

He was possibly vegetarian, Joseann?

Yes, but I did offer alternatives! I think he wanted to take over my kitchen. 🔪

Bellanonna Mon 12-Feb-24 19:44:40

🙂

ixion Mon 12-Feb-24 20:09:28

IIRC, he didn't like the smutty bits😆.

Marydoll Mon 12-Feb-24 20:12:10

Il commença à m'énerver. Moi aussi!

Il voulait contrôler les discussions. Sacrebleu! 😱

"Sacré bleu" and "Zut alors" are phrases simply not used here, so best avoid unless trying to sound like you're auditioning for a part in "Allo Allo".

Joseann Tue 13-Feb-24 00:47:13

Maybe those who used these expressions were being rather witty, because we are actually talking about the usage of the archaic, best avoided passé simple here?
But what do I know?

It was intended to be tongue in cheek! ☹

(B.TW, I have a Master's degree in French Language and Literature, but I do admit to being very rusty. 😉)

I find wearing a beret and stripey top does the trick equally well!

Should the beret be red and the stripey top, blue and white for authenticity?

Joseann Tue 13-Feb-24 08:27:51

In all seriousness, didn't sacré bleu come from sacré Dieu? I believe it was used a lot in literature in the 17th/18th century stuff we had to read. (Shows you're well read * Marydoll*, if rusty!). Does the French language in general have more blasphemous expressions?

Bien sûr!
