….shamelessly cribbed from MN, and also inspired by the ‘Isn’t it quiet?’ thread.

Whether you’re still hoping for more proper summer weather (like me) but still like autumn, or you hate any temp over 20 deg, and can’t wait for wrapped-up walks among fallen leaves, or you dread the nights drawing in, and hate everything about autumn and winter, please feel free!

I’ll start - season of mists and mellow soupfulness - time for lots of substantial main course soups made with seasonal veg and pearl barley etc. - tasty, healthy - and cheap!

In recent years, summer has held back until September and October and we have had Septembers have been hot dry and sunny and October as well at times.

As an Autumn lover I find this incredibly frustrating because once Spetmeber comes I am already to jump into my woolies, walkthrough Autumn woods loving the colour and kicking up the fallen leaves.

I’m really hoping for a few more weeks of summer but the long range weather forecast does not look promising for the NW of England. I think we have missed out on the summer weather this year, when the news was full of clips of people sweltering on beaches, it was cloudy here - the spell of really hot weather was very brief.

I’m not looking forward to squeezing my feet into shoes again, even when it’s a bit chilly, I only wear flip flops between May and October then struggle to wear shoes again - torture for a couple of weeks until I get used to it!

Agree for the missed summer a bit this year! I'm in deepest darkest Lancashire and although beautiful all year round maybe a bit more dry weather? Garden always suffers from slimy drenched blooms syndrome! Have to chop all roses to save them from a drowning! But autumn/winter brings countryside beauty too...

I draw and paint lots however I only seem to get any sort of inspiration when the summer fades!? Autumn , winter and early doors spring are most interesting for me and I just love getting layered up with sweaters comfy cotton over shirts and tunics too! Leggings trapper hats and- boots boots boots!!! Love em!

Lighting the log burner - wood shed already full of seasoned logs.
The cottage is kept warm ( and aired! ) all day without any other heating.
Well, we do cheat if it’s really cold - central heating on for 90 minutes while we get up and shower.

jenni123 - just to say that I really hope that you get your move to a more suitable place as soon as possible flowers. Best wishes from me x

As an insomniac who doesn't sleep until the early hours, I'm looking forward to going to bed in the dark. At this time of year its very often either light or getting light when I can finally settle down to sleep.

I'm also looking forward to the apples from my neighbours tree. We do a swap each year, I let her have all the blackberries she wants from my garden, and in return, she gives me a couple of bags of apples.

What I'm not looking forward to is the neighbourhood kids throwing things at the door. They do this each year when the nights draw in, and last year it was particularly bad. They stand on the footpath and hurl small bricks or whatever other projectile they can find, at the front door from across the garden to provoke a response. Last year they came unstuck as their father saw them on cctv and made them go door to door apologising.

I am seriously dreading autumn as it heralds winter is just around the corner. I live in the countryside in Scotland and it will be dark so early plus my road never sees a gritter, let alone a snowplough. I will worry about my younger son as his new job involves hundreds of miles of driving. This will be my first Christmas without my Dad and my third one as a widow and Christmas day will be spent on my own for the first time ever. The only positive I can see is that I have a job I enjoy and have met some new ladies at a meetup group. Give me the long summer nights when I can walk my dogs along the country roads. I am definitely a hot house flower!

Autumn is my favourite season but this year tinged with a little sadness: Covid means that we would rather not be inside 'closed' buildings, restaurants, etc.

This poor summer has restricted having friends over to eat outside or meet at a restaurant with gardens and I feel that with Autumn fast approaching, there is little time left before we are locked into our own little worlds again....

Autumn is the season I was born in and I don't know if that's the reason that I love it so.The colours, the long walks with our dogs without feeling all hot and bothered, the smell of leaves and the crispness in the air.The one thing that spoils it for me is the build up to Xmas starting earlier and earlier before we've even got Autumn fully underway.

I love the colours of autumn - in nature, and at home and in clothes. I like wearing scarves and boots and warmer coats, but not needing to be too ‘bundled up’ as in winter. Love autumn foods too - soups and stews!

jenni123 Sat 14-Aug-21 18:48:50

Hate winter and the dark nights. I have been in my flat for 18 months, only managed to get out for hospital appointments when transport came for me. I am so hoping that by next year I will have been able to move to a more suitable property so I will be able to enjoy any nice weather we may have then. at 80 yrs old I feel I am running out of time

Foxglove77 Sat 14-Aug-21 18:47:25

As a smallholder autumn is prelude to winter. Dark nights and extra feeding of animals.

madeleine45 Sat 14-Aug-21 18:37:07

I do love kicking leaves about and all the autumn colour, but at this time I give myself permission to leave any but very important jobs if there is a sunny day. Knowing that we wont have the lovely weather for long is the time to make the most of what we do have. So its go up the dales with a picnic or to the coast , not great extravagant things but making the most of good days. I take writing pad with me if I need to write anything, notepad for lists of things to do on miserable days but just enjoy the weather while I can. Still visiting a few gardens and when I get into the right mood time to do jobs in my own garden. Enjoy watching the harvest coming in.and feel every good day I have enjoyed has put winter back a bit!

Autumn is my favourite season. The sun can be warm but not hot and humid as in summer. The colours of the trees, blackberry picking and cosy evenings are some of the things I love about Autumn.

Me too.?
Having a log fire is always lovely ( a kind neighbour gave us half a chopped up silver birch this year) so well stocked up on logs.
Walks in woods when trees are ‘turning’
Warming meals and the occasional pud, such as apple crumble.

Totally agree songstress60 plus add Christmas to the mix and it’s a ?from me. I wish my life away longing for spring. We used to go abroad pre covid for a month or two but that won’t be happening again this year. Think I get ‘sad’ syndrome.

songstress60 Sat 14-Aug-21 17:10:51

I don't like autumn as I dislike the darkness that is going to follow, and it seems to go on for ever. Can't stand the short days and the endless nights. Give me spring any time.

LauraNorder Sat 14-Aug-21 16:41:30

I live in shorts from April onwards, love to be barefoot, love eating al fresco, adore the great outdoors and hope against hope for an Indian summer.
I do like the autumn colours but that’s as far as it goes, dislike winter and wish my life away each year looking forward to spring and glorious summer.
I’m happy to share this island paradise with holidaymakers especially this last two summers of new habits. Our garden is our oasis of calm and a paddle along the shoreline late in the evening when trippers have departed to caravans and cottages for their meal.
At least six more weeks of summer pleeeeease.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 14-Aug-21 16:11:48

While I have enjoyed summer with it's variable weather, come Autumn we are passed any heatwaves but can still have pleasant weather. I love the autumn colours, the greens, rusts, browns etc - my favourite colour spectrum. not too fond of winter, though with it's slushy mushy snow and ice

maytime2 Sat 14-Aug-21 15:47:53

I think it is the dark nights that I dislike most about Autumn and Winter. I find it so depressing, but actually my spirits lift a little at the beginning of January because you can just about see the day very slowly lengthening and know that Spring is around the corner.
I love Spring, but then I am prejudiced as I was born in May. I love looking at the new growth coming through in the garden.
How anyone could like the days in November and December, where because of rain or fog it doesn't really get light at all.

Elvis58 Sat 14-Aug-21 15:01:12

Autumn is my favourite season.Clear blue sky days puntuacted by russet, orange and brown leaves, crisp days, wrapping up, warming soups, jam, chutney making.
Lamplight of an evening ,snuggling down with a cup of tea and a good book.Bliss.

beth20 Sat 14-Aug-21 14:50:30

Love the Autumn best of all the seasons - blackberries, kicking the leaves, flocks of birds - and my birthday!

polly123 Sat 14-Aug-21 14:25:29

Love Autumn. It's colours, scents and being able to wear my boots and cashmere scarves. Love walking in the woods looking at the filtered light through the trees. Also love the build up to Christmas with all the pretty lights and atmosphere. I think Spring is wonderful with the new growth and clear bright weather (if we're lucky). Don't like Summer very much with humidity, wasps and boring clothes. We are lucky though to have the changing seasons.

SueEH Sat 14-Aug-21 13:37:23

Autumn is my favourite season, but, if the end of September counts as autumn, this year I’m looking forward to getting on a plane and heading off to Greece for a big family reunion and holiday !

handbaghoarder Sat 14-Aug-21 13:14:31

I really love the changing seasons here. Spring is my favourite. But I really dislike Autumn. Hate the nights drawing in, the melancholy light, the falling leaves, DH closing the curtains at tea time. I always feel trapped. I long to see people out and about having fun in the sun and just going about their business. I dont feel cosy and comfy just claustrophobic. Strangely this lifts once we get into winter, I guess because Spring is on its way with the promise of awakening and a new start.
