I have a raincoat but it is too thick for wearing in the summer so I need something lightweight but waterproof. Any ideas, please?

The rain we have been experiencing here would need a SowWester !

Joules? They do lovely lightweight raincoats which fold up into their own pocket. Also Landsend Storm for slightly thicker, eg for cooler days or evenings but not winter weight

I’ve been very pleased with the raincoat I bought last year from Mountain Warehouse and very reasonably priced too.

I bought a lightweight kagoule (a word that makes DGD giggle!) from Mountain Warehouse four years ago and it’s ideal for summer showers. It rolls up into a small bundle for easy packing in a rucksack or large handbag. They’ve always got reduced items available online or in store.

The problem is that properly waterproof implies a different type of fabric which is often heavier or treated. Water resistant or shower proof is not the same and you still get soaked in a downpour.

Seasalt have some nice waterproof ones.

If you want truly waterproof ones best to get them with taped seams. Light weight roll up ones are good. You can get them from Regatta or Cotton Traders both of which have sales on at present.

Have a look at Seasalt.

Craghoppers you can get some bargains on their website. I’ve just bought a new one, it’s so well made.

I bought a midi length Jack Murphy bushcoat several years ago and wondered if I'd get wear out of it. It keeps coming out as it keeps my head and legs dry too, unlike those short anoraks you get in outdoor shops.

My pack away one from Joules, has come in very handy this summer.
Give them a look?

DanniRae do you sew? I have made several jackets for myself, one is ripstop nylon with a very lightweight cotton lining so it doesn't stick to skin in hot weather. The other is a japara cotton with a soft, warm lining for cool weather while a couple of others are for rainy days during Winter.

I used the same pattern for each jacket and they all have a hood with long front zip and each one has it's own drawstring bag for storage once it has dried. They make a good pillow while rolled in the bag, if you are travelling.

Actually they look like the one in the photo posted by tippytipsy.

I’ve had one of these for about 5 years, Peter Storm, definitely waterproof.

Eluarise, I h@ve never heard of any one making their own waterproof, you must be a very good I wouldn’t attempt one.

Another vote for the Joules pack away Mac. Very lightweight and roomy enough to cover well.
