Do you hate the sound of your own voice?

As part of my job, I have to record student oral exams. An unfortunate part of this involves me asking them questions. When I mark the exams, I have to listen and relisten to the recordings as I go through the criteria and pick out bits for comments. I have NEVER got used to listening to myself on them. I know how to make myself sound 'better' to my own ears but in the midst of exam performance anxiety, I frequently forget to modulate, flatten my accent and enunciate.

Not so much my voice but my accent.

Despite living abroad half my life, my accent is very noticeable when I speak English (my second language)

Absolutely can’t stand it and feel sorry for anybody who has to listen to it!! ?

MawBe Tue 24-Aug-21 04:29:24

I could have written that too OP !
I don’t/didn’t worry about my French or German accent, the latter was my first language in childhood and the inflections are instinctive, but hate the sound of my voice in English.
Ironic because way back I was told I had a good voice for the media and one of the local TV stations who had interviewed me about my time on an exchange in Kentucky, suggested I should consider a career in presenting. Things must have changed a lot for the worse as I even hate the recorded message on my answering machine.

I absolutely cringe when I hear my own voice on a recording. I feel the same about seeing myself in photos too.

I make Vera Duckworth sound posh. And I also hate seeing a photo of myself or worse nowadays a video! Argh!

Lucca Tue 24-Aug-21 07:24:46

Everyone is the same I think! (Agree with Maw though, better in foreign language )

Agree about photos, I genuinely cringe when I see photos of myself these days. Silly and vain I know.

Yes I too cringe when I hear my voice, I have a Lancashire accent which seems to sound even more broad on film or over the phone. However, when I was on holiday in the US, Americans kept commenting on how they loved my accent, they obviously have no idea! ?

I hate to hear myself too - I sound like the Queen Mother! And I am not a bit posh.

Another cringer. I once had to do a video chat as part of a civil service course. Shocked to hear myself. And even those I haven't spoken to for a long time instantly recognise me! blush

I first heard my voice on a video recording many years ago and thought, that person sounds a bit common, then realising it was me! So no, I don't much like my voice.

Same here Lauren59.

I hate it - brings it home to me that I still have a Yorkshire accent despite having lived many years abroad - Scotland!! and Holland.

Marmight Tue 24-Aug-21 10:05:53

Yes I do.
I used to sound a bit like Princess Anne but the voice has got deeper & more gravelly. Practically down in my boots. Just as well we don’t hear ourselves as others do ?

henetha Tue 24-Aug-21 10:07:40

I'm really Devonshire and just loathe my voice and accent.

Elless Tue 24-Aug-21 10:11:02

Apparently when you talk you hear yourself differently to how you sound because your bones muffle it. When you hear a recording, that is how you sound to other people so a recording isn't a shock to them.

FannyCornforth Tue 24-Aug-21 10:12:07

I have a Black Country accent and have a high voice.
I honestly sound about 12 years old on the phone. It has been known for me to have to explain that I am an actual adult.
To say that my voice lacks gravitas is an understatement

That sounds great!
I could live with that smile

FannyCornforth Tue 24-Aug-21 10:13:58

In fact Marmight, perhaps we could form a double act?

V3ra Tue 24-Aug-21 10:26:16

I always used to hate hearing my voice on a recording but, without wishing to sound conceited, I'm quite happy with it now. I think I've grown into it!

ginny Tue 24-Aug-21 10:31:07

I’m always amazed when I hear my recorded voice and I don’t like it. It certainly doesn’t sound the same as when I speak. My DD always says it’s because we hear ourselves from inside.
On the plus side, having sung in choirs and as duets and solos, I am equally amazed that I sound quite good on recordings.

trisher Tue 24-Aug-21 10:35:29

I used to hate my voice. But in the past few years I've had a number of compliments about it, even been told I should do a podcast of stories. So maybe I'm just not hearing it properly. confused

maddyone Tue 24-Aug-21 10:50:50

I hate hearing my own voice on a recording.

DillytheGardener Tue 24-Aug-21 11:07:05

I hate the sound of my voice. I shout without realising because I’m very slightly hard of hearing. I also have a very South London accent (I’m from a county on the other side of the Greater London border, and drop letters no matter how hard I try. My favourite accent/voice however is Stephen fry and Philip Mould. The latter’s is so soothing. Apparently he is from Liverpool though so he must have been educated at a public school or taken elocution lessons.

I don't mind my accent, but my voice sounds like a child's. When I had a house phone, I used to get asked could the caller speak to my mother, I'm 55 at the weekend.
