Short Break

I'm looking to take a short break perhaps October, before it gets too cold. I would quite like to go somewhere not far from London, but with plenty to see and do and is still open and not locked for the season end. I have read this morning the UK that the prices for UK self catering accommodation have risen considerably and was wondering if any of you might have any suggestions.

Oxford is not far from London and plenty to see and do. I can’t help with self catering accommodation though, I have always stayed in Malmaison.

I also can’t help with self catering but Oxford is lovely
We also love York not that far from London by train. Brighton always open

I’d second the Oxford area, apart from the city, the surrounding area has many attractions.

Another vote here for Oxford . Have you looked at Airbnb Newatthis ?

Just avoid school half term dates.

Thanks everyone - I'll look at Air BnB and the Oxford area.

Just a note of caution - we were going to book 1 night in a Premier Inn at the end of September just outside York. We were expecting to pay around £60 but discovered it would cost £205!!! We will drive back Leicestershire instead!

Premier inn not always the best value We stay at Fairfield Manor just outside York but two mons from Rawcliffe Park and ride
In Oxford we stay at Jurys again in a lovely small village outside Oxford but on very regular bus route Just waiting for them to get their act together they have closed the main restaurant and delivering breakfast to your door in a bag Not a 4* service

Kitty I stayed in York a couple of years ago at a Novotel and it was surprisingly good.
Our room came with breakfast and parking.
It was good value on our trip, smart enough and even had a pool.

Novotel York Centre.

The idea came into my head this morning of fancying an overnight stay in York this weekend as it’s a long weekend. On looking kittylester I agree about prices. They are the sort of prices I would expect to pay for a London hotel. Think we will stay put!

Or treat yourself and go to the Randolph.
You might spot Morse in a corner with his latest lady friend!

Cambridge is nice too.

vegansrock Thu 26-Aug-21 16:18:50

Although just a thought, because of COVID all the colleges in Cambridge are closed to visitors- you used to be able to walk round the buildings and gardensI expect Oxford is the same. What about Canterbury or Bath?

We went for one night to Brockenhurst in the New Forest. It was a lovely hotel, right opposite the forest/heathland where ponies and cattle grazed. It cost £150 including a full breakfast. If you are driving, there are some lovely villages round about and Winchester is a short drive away. It wasn't too busy either.

Eastbourne is very nice too.

rosie1959 Thu 26-Aug-21 18:27:37

I like Eastbourne too but again hotel prices have rocketed There is a particularly nice one called The View which does have wonderful sea views from its balcony rooms
I have looked at the end of September but prices are still so high

We find that when the races are on prices rocket in York.

Just can’t believe all who are having ‘Pandemic Breaks’
Air b@b during a pandemic. Really?

Edith81 Fri 27-Aug-21 11:11:11

I think Airbnb is the way to go for a short s/c break. Hastings and Margate are excellent towns with places of interest not far from London.

Caro57 Fri 27-Aug-21 11:12:18

Just back from a short break in Chipping Norton - lovely, went to Chastleton House (filmed some of Wold Hall there) and Blenheim both fascinating. Great places to eat in CN - breakfast lunch and dinner!

The Cotswolds are lovely, have a look on the Tourist guide : cotswolds.info . Lots of lovely towns and villages and many other attractions. There is a nice hotel chain 'Cotswolds inns and hotels' all with great restaurants too.

rosie1959 Fri 27-Aug-21 11:16:12

LovelyLady what is a Pandemic break ?
Don't use Airbnb myself much preferring a hotel but I can't see anything wrong with them

beth20 Fri 27-Aug-21 11:43:23

My vote would go to Chester - we had a super mini-break there a few years ago. I'd especially recommend the walking tour of the town with a guide.
