Jig saws

My sister and i always see each other Saturday mornings for breakfast and a catch up. This week we started a jigsaw puzzle which we will do together every week. I have it set up on the dinning table on one of those special boards so if it needs to be removed it can be. I was surprised how much fun it was doing this together. We are hoping it will help the old grey matter and it gives us something to focus on whilst spending time together. I bought two from a charity shop so hoping they wont have missing pieces. Once done i will return back to the shop. There are some beautiful ones around and many evoke memories of days gone by so they become a talking point too.smile Anyone else doing puzzles??

I so miss doing Jigsaw puzzles, did them for years but Arthritis
in hands made it too difficult to pick up and place pieces

I love jigsaws as well. Like you, I get mine from charity shops and they get returned after completing them a couple of times. It is usually a winter occupation and it can get a bit addictive and a terrible time-eater!

It is always worth ensuring that it is made by a well known name - some of the cheaper ones are very badly made and the pieces bend and don't fit well.

I've always been lucky and not had any pieces missing. I think that is a lovely way to spend time together with your sister.

I did one for the 1st in ages during lockdown. DH had one made for me with photos of the family on found it very relaxing during those trying times.

I like jigsaw puzzles too. If there’s one out, it’s funny how visitors will sit down and try to add a few pieces while we chat.
My sister lent me this Harry Potter one. It’s taking a while because of all the frames.

I do jig saw puzzles online, no storage problems and no lost pieces. Each puzzle is saved until completed.

I love jigsaws too. I would like to work on them with DH but he refuses, as we have different methods which are incompatible. I think it is a nice thing to do together. I must admit I haven't done as many this year as they make my neck ache. When I was a child, between about 9 - 13, my sister and I used to race each other to see who finished theirs first.

I like jigsaws too and we sell a lot in the charity shop Obviusly we can’t count the pieces so it’s always a risk but at £2.00 for a 1000 piece you don’t lose a lot, however I do find lots of our grifters write on the box ‘complete’ or ‘one piece missing’ (so then that one goes in the bin) So if you are donating any, do remember that’s always a really useful thing to do

My DH has just started one that is an aerial view of Stonehenge. It is a 1000 piece stinker. A mostly featureless expanse of green and grey. But he loves a challenge!

We always have one on the go. It is on a board on the dining table and, as our dining room has the lounge door and the stairs in it, attracts lots of interest from passersby.

DD2 swaps jigsaw at work.

I'm a jigsaw addict! At the last count there were 45 in the loft. Every time my husband goes up there he swears they are breeding.
If you like doing them online, look at jigidi.com I like the ones posted by pendlewitch.

Mollygo Mon 30-Aug-21 09:32:09

Little Annie, I like online ones as well so thanks for that link. I’m limited to around 550 pieces on my iPad mini though so bigger ones have to be actual instead of virtual.

I love them. I prefer the 1,000 piece ones. Certainly addictive, but very satisfying to do and quite calming. I listen to the radio at the. same time. Jigsaws are supposed to be good for the brain - improving cognitive skills, so a double bonus! Lovely hobby and I like to have one on the go all the time on a jigsaw mat that I push to the other end of the kitchen table when we’re eating.

I spend time most days on jigsaws. I don't have space to lay out a 1000 piece one so stick to 500s, which take 2-3 days. My favourites are the Gibson ones with 4 in a box on a theme. The village next to mine has a swap shop for books, puzzles and games in a disused bus shelter. Saves a lot of money!

shysal Mon 30-Aug-21 09:43:42

Does anybody else bag the edge pieces separately when dismantling a puzzle? I like starting a new one where this has been done.

I enjoy jigsaw puzzles. The Works is an excellent source of jigsaw puzzles. So much cheaper than most and a huge selection to suit all tastes. The Works are on-line if you don't have one of their stores nearby. When I have completed mine I take them along to my Active Retirement group and put them on the swop table.

I look forward to starting another as the evenings draw in. I prefer 1000 piece puzzles and use a jigsaw folder from WH Smith which allows me to store work in progress. Last Christmas my son treated me to a Wentworth wooden puzzle (featuring 'whimsy' pieces) which I'll keep as a family heirloom.

My 10year grandaughter loves them so I have one ready for her every visit. My Nana was an addict to them and we weren't allowed to touch them so this is sweet revenge!

Aldom Mon 30-Aug-21 11:03:38

I agree, it's so enjoyable when several people share a jigsaw puzzle. One Christmas I was staying with my stepdaughter and family. My three adult step granddaughters and I had a specially happy time completing a 1,000 piece puzzle together. During lock down I discovered online jigsaws from the Ashmolean museum in Oxford.
Shysal storing the edge pieces in a bag is such a good idea smile Thank you for the tip.
Littleannie thank you for the link to jigidi

Nannagarra Mon 30-Aug-21 11:18:37

Nell8 would you please mind posting a photo of the Wentworth wooden puzzle you received? It sounds wonderful.

timetogo2016 Mon 30-Aug-21 12:00:45

I love jigsaws too,i got my grandchildren into to them too,it gets them off the gaming stuff so win win.#

There is an app on Android tablets called Jigsaroid. Not sure if it is on ipads. It lets you make jigsaws in any size from your own pictures. I download pictures from Pinterest, so I have a never ending source of new lovely jigsaws to do. 300 pieces is my limit on my tablet, so I do 1000 piece ones on a board.

nanasam Mon 30-Aug-21 12:44:26

shysa1 yes, I bag the straight edges. I don't count it as 'cheating', I think it prolongs the life of the puzzle by us not having to trawl through all the pieces every time. I'm very lucky - I forget easily so I can do jigsaws over and over again, as I can with books or films blush

Calendargirl Mon 30-Aug-21 12:48:08

I hate jigsaws, always have. No patience to do them.

A child’s 32 piece one is about my limit!
