Sticking tongue out in photos.

To me, it looks rude. It seems to be some sort of joke when they do it in photos, but I don't know what they mean by it. Can anyone tell me why they do it and what it means?

It's playful childlike fun I'm told. We used to do daft things too. Just didn't have selfie phones then

It's awful, I can never see the point of it. The other one that is becoming more common is women pouting in photos -- just why??

I fully agree about this habit. I have 6 teenage granddaughters and am fed up with getting photos on my phone of them and their friends sticking their tongues out or pouting. They are all pretty girls, just smile. The celebrities do it, apparently.

Our local ‘trash nothing’ website had a request from a young couple, worded in a very cocky way, saying that they had just got a flat and needed ‘everything’.
My first thought was, “Are either of them working?” My second was that the picture they had added, both smirking and pulling tongues, would probably ensure that they would receive few, if any, donations.

Two typos in that - wee should of course be were, and " which were a come-on sign" should have been " which ARE a come-on sign"

If it's teenage / young adult people doing it , it has sexual connotations .
Likewise , the pumped up pouty lips. They apparently are to signify ,swollen aroused labia lips. Who knew !confused

Hellsbelles Even wearing lipstick is symbolic - prostitutes in ancient Rome used to redden their lips to indicate that they wee willing to give oral sex (which the better-class ones refused to do)

And, of course, reddened lips were/are also reminiscent of the swollen scarlet labia of female chimpanzees in oestrus, which were a come-on sign to the male chimps. Homo sapiens is not very far removed from the other great apes.

some of these are pretty obvious, but not something i want to think about.

Allsorts Fri 10-Sep-21 20:11:23

It’s a mystery!

kircubbin2000 Fri 10-Sep-21 20:10:19

There's one that teenage boys do that I don't understand.pose wearing a top and say needed to change.

Smurf52 Fri 10-Sep-21 19:24:56

It's the same with young girls pouting and posing at camera at all angles. Still, if I was still 15 I would be doing it too grin

Missiseff Fri 10-Sep-21 18:49:59

Good grief.

Oh, how yucky!

NotTooOld Fri 10-Sep-21 17:14:30

It's all over Facebook, isn't it? Truly annoying. I have seen photos of 70 year olds doing it, so I don't think it's a generational thing at all. The horned fingers or pointing at the top of someone's head is also annoying. I also hate it when someone being filmed suddenly does a big grin and points a finger at someone else out of shot, as if to say 'Oh, hi, you're here, too!' I've even seen Obama do that. Gosh, what a good rant I am having this afternoon.

JenniferEccles Fri 10-Sep-21 17:05:53

I also hate the habit, mostly with young women, of opening their mouths as wide as possible in an exaggerated laugh.

songstress60 Fri 10-Sep-21 17:02:37

It's ignorant when kids do it and when an adult does that - well how immature!

Lin663 Fri 10-Sep-21 16:48:23

It’s tedious, annoying and pointless

grandtanteJE65 Fri 10-Sep-21 16:30:44

I have never seen a photo where anyone was sticking their tongue out.

We were taught it was rude, although I never remember any grown-up telling us why it was rude.

Am I still missing a sexual connotation when I wonder why it is rude, or why cocking a snoot, also called flypeing your nose is rude?

I detest having my photo taken and if someone persists after I have asked them not too I pull faces, stick tongues out anything to ruin the photo, yes it’s childish but it’s damn rude to take a snap after been told no

felice Fri 10-Sep-21 14:17:46

I seem to see a lot of photos with wide open mouths too. Not flattering to view the tonsils in my opinion.
Sil takes a really nice photo, DD like me hates then so just scowls.

narrowboatnan Fri 10-Sep-21 14:13:02

I really dislike it too. It’s silly and childish. What happened to the days when we all said “Cheese!” and smiled? That was much nicer

Hithere Fri 10-Sep-21 13:44:39

I dont associate it with that porn reference at all either

Zoejory Fri 10-Sep-21 13:15:02

Porn reference? Good grief. I'm like you, Musicgirl

No porn. Just a silly habit that's been going on for years.

Not much to see here

Musicgirl Fri 10-Sep-21 13:11:51

welbeck

i think it has got indecent connotations that young children may not, probably not be aware of.
they see the big girls doing it, and think that's the thing to do, without understanding the porn reference.

I never knew that there was a porn reference until now. I must be very innocent. I always thought it was a rude, childish way of saying “so there.”

Tanjamaltija Fri 10-Sep-21 12:59:10

That, and duckface, and making horns behind the head of the person next to you...
