In my case, Benidorm?

Callistemon Sat 18-Sept-21 23:30:07

The Waitrose in Staines has closed down, as has Debenhams, Laura Ashley, M&S and various other stores. I kind of liked Staines, it was a nice workaday town.
Oh no, I used to go shopping in Staines sometimes, I bought a carrycot from Mothercare for DC3.

That was a long time ago!

LauraNorder - he lived there for a while as a young man... and ctually I remember it in the 1970s and it was fairly grim then. But it did at least have a bookshop!

Obviously it's different now.

It opened at a very handy time for us, Grannypiper! They built the Travelodge and Waitrose together, with a car park underneath, at the time my DS & DIL expanded their family so we could no longer stay with them because they didn’t have room.

There’s not much else in Egham. A grotty Tesco, a couple of down-at-heel chain coffee shops and that is mostly it. Oh, there is a good pet shop. grin

i always feel Egham sounds lonely without chips.

grannypiper Sat 18-Sept-21 17:30:49

SueDomin I can't believe Waitrose would stoop so low as to have a store in Egham. worriedwell it does have a awful bad vibe.

You can’t leave it like that melp! smile
What was it like / what happened?
Did you meet Clarkson?
A friend from uni was a Saturday girl at a green grocers in Doncaster .
Jeremy often went shopping for Ma C in there, and he was very rude to her - a shop girl in her teens. Not nice

JaxJacky I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed Weston. It will always have a big place in my heart.

Jaxjacky Sat 18-Sept-21 16:13:09

We’ve just had four days in Weston, loved it, but didn’t stay in the centre just out, didn’t go shopping or into the municipal pool! Liked south Uphill and the golf club, walked the prom and stayed in a lovely hotel. Next trip Hastings.
But in accord with the OP, any dentists.

Yes Juno Rye is lovely - I hope to go there again sometime.
(Maybe a new thread "Places I want to go to again")

We drove round and round Rye and couldn't find anywhere to park so we left and have never been back.

Aldeburgh not Aldenburgh predictive text ☹️

tinaf1 Sat 18-Sept-21 10:37:04

Just come back from few days from Suffolk coast , been there few times,
Aldenburgh Thorpeness great just how I remembered laid back lovely walking along the coast , high street in Aldenburgh great although lots of expensive shops
But Southwold the jewel in the crown was just meh! Pier look tired and so did High street

LauraNorder Fri 17-Sept-21 16:42:02

Bangor, North Wales is on the stunning Menai Straits with magnificent Snowdonia as its backdrop. It has a wonderful pier and some pretty parks albeit small. A university offering ocean sciences among many other interesting degree courses on offer. One very long High Street suffering from the affects of out of town shopping but hanging on.
The worst thing about Bangor is the incessant cold wind which howls through the high street, but if you’re wrapped up warmly it’s not a bad place.
The hospital also has its problems. Under Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board it’s rarely out of special measures but hopefully if you’re just visiting that won’t concern you.

Holiday camps of the Pontins, Butlins, Haven ilk. When our children were young we gave in to our daughter's request that we have a holiday at one. So we went to a holiday centre in Camber Sands. Just appalling, never again! Hundreds of our fellow holiday makers seemed to be having a whale of a time however so it was probably us ?.
I would add that the beach at Camber Sands is lovely and we enjoyed the nearby town of Rye. It is just holiday camps that I dislike.

Westfield shopping centre, near white city.
don't like large shops anyway, and lots of them together is worse.

My father was very dismissive of Bangor. He said it was the last place on earth that God created and he'd forgotten to finish it.
Bangor of course is another B place...

which one ?

Salford Keys. Miserable, grey, freezing cold.

Yes, Jaxie, I have to agree with that. Very strange place if you ask me.

The border crossing between Northern Iraq and Turkey at a dump called Zakho in Kurdistan. About 10 years ago I decided to make my way to Damascus overland from Mosul instead of flying. Absolutely appalled at the way the Turkish immigration treated the Kurds traveling into Turkey. I was in a Kurdish registered vehicle so had to wait for 6 hours in a long queue in the sweltering heat. It wasn't until the family in front reached the immigration post that I realised that every Kurdish car was being completely gutted - upholstery ripped open, doors taken apart, every piece of baggage opened and strewn across the floor. They even stamped on the toys belonging to the wee kids in the car in front of us. My driver told me that this happened to all Kurds who wouldn't pay a bribe at the border. They wanted $150 not to strip-search me (2 male officers) and a further $50 for a visa which I already had (cost $20). I didn't pay but we still had to wait another 3 hours before they let us go.
I also never want to be in IKEA in Dubai on a public holiday!

lemongrove

Haha ?I hadn’t noticed the B connection of places I wouldn't go back to, and it’s entirely possible the Scottish place began with a B too! Spooky or what?
However, on reflection I shall add Worksop to the list and also
Delabole ( once lived there.)

That made me think of some alliterations!

As King George V said (supposedly) "Bugger Bognor"

There isn’t much else to be said for Egham, though.
If you want history then Runnymede is just near Egham, where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, the John F Kennedy memorial and, if you have any connections to the RAF the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial site.
