In my case, Benidorm?

^Dolgellau. The most unfriendly place I’ve ever been to in the UK. Like a Welsh Royston Vasey.^

Heck! I'm there this weekend Greyduster, I'll keep my wits about me!

You'll be ok if you can say one or all of the following and smile

“Bore da” – Good morning
“Prynhawn da” – Good afternoon
“Nos da” – Good night
“Helô / Hylô” – Hello

Llamedos13 it really was unbelievably scary to be honest as they wouldn't explain anything.

We were crossing by car after a long drive and it was an evening and pretty quiet. There was, however, a queue inside the building of about 12 people and we had to wait for ages (2 hrs?). The queue included an extended Pakistani/American family (who we were told to stop speaking to). They assumed this middle-aged man had several wives (and asked him this three times) but he was actually escorting his young (14-17 year old) nieces back from a visit to a sick grandmother. He was mortified and alarmed. His own wife was horrified and kept saying "these are my sister's children, they are children" and when their own little boy needed the toilet after an hour or so they wouldn't let a parent go with him even though it was just off the area we were waiting. They were really pushy and aggressive. They were horrible to this little family. I was SO ashamed to be white that day.

Corfu. Horrible, filthy and dangerous.

Thanks for that explanation, TizLiz.. If there’s no cafe, I’ll give it a miss. grin. Dh and ds1 went up it when ds was about 10yo. I think Dh was doing a charity thing with colleagues. They were all huffing and puffing up while ds scampered his way to the top.

Scampered! What a lovely word!

Las Vegas , so fake and sleazy, and I’m not a gambler so it was also really boring.
However I’m another one who loved Rome, didn’t get ripped off or have anything stolen, and loved the beauty and history of the city, we went in February though, so not high season , maybe that’s why we were made most welcome?

So sad to read comments on Rhyl, although I had to agree with them. It was my home town and a lovely place to grow up in during the 50s and 60s. Breaks my heart to see the mess it has become. The beach is beautiful and walking along the prom is still worthwhile, but the town itself has been ruined. I can understand people not wanting to go back to certain resorts but whole countries seems a bit unreasonable. France and Greece amazing areas to explore.

How can someone dismiss an area because they didn't like the hotel that they were staying in. Come on......that doesn't make any sense at all confused

NotSpaghetti, I live on the Canadian side of the border at Port Huron and have crossed there many times. I too have fallen victim to the custom officers rudeness, they are so intimidating, I always feel like a criminal when they question me.

One things sure - we'll never be able to book a big gransnet holiday!

Glastonbury. Having never been there before, we were driving to meet friends there for lunch. As we got near, I felt extremely uneasy. Driving down the main road, I noticed it was lined with shops selling all manner of 'spiritual' things (nothing to do with Christianity). We lunched with our friends but I couldn't wait to leave the place!

Ah, but in the Abbey grounds you get a feeling of peace and tranquillity, hal8ce Well is peaceful and climb to the top of the Tor for amazing views.

I did buy some crystals from a stall as well!

Im amazed that so many people don't look beyond their first impressions.

NT Cotehele , new castle in Devon . Covered in plastic sheeting , lovely grounds covered in building materials uck Still had to pay ! Built 100 plus years ago , weather pulling it down lol

Do you mean Castle Drogo, Teddy5005? The roof leaked and needed extensive repairs. Cotehele House is a lovely old manor house in Cornwall.

If there was ever a thread to demonstrate that we are all different then this is it. I’ve noticed several places in the UK and abroad that I’ve loved that clearly haven’t charmed other gransnetters. Someone upthread mentioned Scotland … what all of it? That does seems a bit harsh! I was born in Scotland and am currently holidaying here so I guess I am biased, but then aren’t we all one way or another?

seacliff Tue 14-Sept-21 22:48:37

Dominica Republic. First and only all inclusive holiday, we were prisoners in the hotel complex. Armed guards on beach. Inundated with extremely insistent beggars if we tried to go anywhere. The poor were treated terribly. Not if you paid me.

Callistemon Tue 14-Sept-21 22:45:29

One place I dislike is Dubrovnik. I found the people to be very cold and unfriendly, certainly wouldn’t go back.
Croatian people are very warm and welcoming but perhaps may be reserved at first.

Moth62 Tue 14-Sept-21 22:40:47

Oh, I’ve been to lots of other places in Italy that I e loved, Lucca. Rimini, however…I shall not darken its doors again.
