Having a couple of days stay in Edinburgh. I haven’t been for about 40 years!
Any recommendations for “must see, must do “ ?

Recommendations for Edinboro.

Start by getting its name right. hmm

Always endears you to the natives.

Recommendations for Edinboro. It is in Scotland, SNP, so the best suggestion is Leave.

Lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years and never did visit the Castle.
I’d add to recommendation for the Botanics (National Botanic Gardens), the Mary King Close, and mooching/browsing. I love Stockbridge, George Street and the side streets (used to love sitting on my own in Henderson’s veggie restaurant, wonder if it’s still there), walk up past the Galleries to Victoria Bow and Cowgate. And found Britannia most interesting, too

Get on the 'hop on and off' tourist bus. Goes to the Botanic Gardens (we didn't alight as it was raining heavily) and then R.Y.Britannia, which is definitely worth a visit. Stop again at Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament building. We went in to admire the architecture and ended up staying longer than planned listening to a debate.
We had a lovely full Scottish breakfast in the restaurant on the top floor of Debenhams with an amazing view of the castle. I suppose it must be closed now. sad

Mary King's Close is facinating, historical and creepy. Part of the city was covered over during the plague, it's like a hidden underground city. Make sure you book.

Leith is lovely for a wander.

Botanical gardens/R.Y.Brittania (really good)/ Mary king close(underground nether world from days of old dead good!)/ Castle and armoury museum/ Scottish crown Jewels in castle / just have a super time, it's beautiful!

Definitely visit Mary Kings Close. Last time I was there you had to book so might be worth checking.
Also Greyfriars Bobby and the surrounding area is very nice.

Camera obscura is also worth a visit

As someone who lives here I can recommend going to either Stockbridge in the New Town or Bruntsfield/Morningside near the Meadows for lovely browsing/shopping and cafes/eateries. Both walkable from the centre or a single fare flat fee one way of £1.80 on a lothian bus from princes street (29 or 24 to Stockbridge and 11 or 16 to Bruntsfield/morningside). Buses here are great and you can get anywhere very easily.

There are escape rooms at the old Vet School, worth a try

We go to Edinburgh every year for a few days. It's a lovely city.

I would recommend the National Museum of Scotland, the Writers Museum (very small, commemorates Robbie Burns, Walter Scott and R L Stevenson, if I remember rightly), Dynamic Earth, Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat, and a tour of Mary King's Close. My family have done a couple of the walking tours, the ghost ones, and said they were brilliant. I haven't done them because I have bad arthritis and wouldn't be able to keep up. As an Ian Rankin fan, I think that the Rebus tour would be good, but again I think that you need to be able to walk at a reasonable pace.

My friend toured the Britannia and said it was well worth the money but it has never appealed to me.

The Botanical Gardens are very good, if the weather is kind to you.

There are medical museums with many fascinating exhibits. Also the zoo is good for a day out. There is a daily bus pass which is cheaper than the tourist bus and you can go everywhere.

If the Royal Family are not in residence, which they usually are in July, you can visit Holyrood House as well as the Castle.

Lindylou23 Wed 22-Sept-21 12:19:11

Mary King Street on the Royal Mike streets under ground, also the Dungeon is very good, a good laugh

Dorado Wed 22-Sept-21 12:03:21

Dynamic Earth!

Britannia and the underground ghost vault walks.
In no particular order.
I’d also recommend the small pubs with live music.

Ooohh this thread is making me wish I was there. I used to go there regularly to visit my sister until covid thwarted travel plans across the Atlantic. ?for next year.Love all the places recommended, it’s a wonderful city.

A further recommendation for Dynamic Earth. We attended a wedding there and went back the next day. Really engaged our inner child and loved it. The Botanical gardens are lovely particularly the Queen Mum's garden. If you feel energetic Arthur's seat is worth the climb. We also enjoy mouching about - its lovely city to walk about and enjoy the buzz.

The covenant jail tour with greyfriars bobby mention, also the underground tours. We checked out the castle very friendly city would love to go back sometime.

Oh, the new St James's centre! Very controversial. ?

Blondiescot Tue 21-Sept-21 21:08:39

Yes, stop by Greyfriars Bobby, but remember 'nae touching the boaby'! So much to see and do in Edinburgh that it's hard to pack it all into just a couple of days. If you like whisky, the new Johnnie Walker Experience at the west end of Princes Street (used to be Frasers department store) might well be worth a stop.

Grannyben Tue 21-Sept-21 20:58:28

Don't forget to stop by Greyfriers Bobby. I do miss Edinburgh

Nobody's mentioned the Castle! Followed by a walk down the Royal Mile.

Another vote here for the National Portrait Gallery. Also the National Museum of Scotland.

Me, I'd give the Britannia a miss. smile

I second the museum. One of the most amazing museums I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to lots. Quite difficult to find initially, though, although I’ve worked out where it is now. However it will take up a whole day of a two day visit: there’s so much to see! I also have to make a pilgrimage to Greyfriars Bobbies statue and the Kirk yard and cry every time I get there! And I went to the modern art gallery last time I was there and loved it. I think there’s a shuttle bus that takes you to all the different art galleries. However, if you’re only there for a couple of days I guess it’s best to do the bus and get a feel for the place. I’ve yet to see the sea at Edinburgh and forget it’s actually on the coast. The train ride from Berwick to Edinburgh is wonderful, too. And Edinburgh Zoo.

I lived in Portobello for a few years many moons ago.

Done the tourist bus thing ! Nipped into the national Gallery (and liked the Raeburn paintings.) Doing the other galleries tomorrow. Booked dinner in a French restaurant in Grassmarket……

Had honestly forgotten what beautiful city it is.
