have you got your heating on yet?

I have resisted the temptation to put mine on. I find that when i am doing things round the house and garden that layers are keeping me warm enough. Thicker PJ's at night keep me warm in bed, wool socks and fur lined slippers keep my feet cosy. When i sit down in the afternoon/evenings, i make a hot water bottle which i put in the small of my back and with a throw and the sitting room door closed i feel quite cosy and warm enough. I am scared of running up a large bill and as there is only me in the house i can complete these economies without affecting anyone else. I will feel easier once i have my winter fuel allowance as i will set that aside to pay towards my gas bills.

The temperature here in Cheshire has been 10 degrees all day and probably less with wind chill. You bet I've got the heating on this evening and I'm wearing wrist warmers as well.

BigBertha1 Tue 05-Oct-21 22:57:13

By the way I am immobile at the moment with a slipped disc.

BigBertha1 Tue 05-Oct-21 22:55:23

Germanshepherdsmum I have Lupus and osteoporosis arthritis everywhere. I live in the North West. I'm cold all the time so I have my heating on whenever I like and certainly from Late September to early May . There are other things I don't have. Is that OK with you or am I being insensitive spending my money on my priorities

Jumpers and a 'throw' over my knees for now though I have put electric blanket back on my single be for if it gets too chilly....I live alone.

We’ve moved into a house with an air source heat pump and haven’t mastered the settings yet. The thermostat is set at 18C but is also on a timer and a couple of recent mornings we’ve woken up to a chilly bedroom. I do think we’re getting used to a cooler ambient temperature - the thermostat in the old house have been set higher by now.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 05-Oct-21 19:41:47

It is set to come on between 7am and 9 pm.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 05-Oct-21 19:40:53

We had a new boiler this summer, so I’ll be interested how much more efficient it is compared to our old one.

We have it set at 21c as DH has heart issues and on blood thinners and feels the cold. I’ve looked up the optimum temperature for people like DH and advised 21c so that’s why it is set at that.

It has come on for about 1/2 hr one morning but that is all so far.

Ours comes on and off with the thermostat, which is set at 18.5 degrees. It comes on for 3.5 hours in the morning 6.5 hours in the evening, depending on the thermostat, of course. It has come on this week.

However this week hasn't been helped by having builders in who were accessing the house via the garage, which meant both garage doors, to the outside and into the house, have been open all day.

Our fuel consmption should fall this winter as we have had a single story extension built, but used the opportunity to get rid of the uninsulated roof of an earlier extension (1966) and put a highly insulated zinc roof over all the extensions. This with the insulated floor and external walls of the new extension, plus double glazing all windows in both extensions should make a significant difference to our fuel consumption.

We can already feel how much more even the heat is and how much longer it stays warm during the day - and we have yet to install the heating in the new build part of the house.

No central heating here. My husband put the fan away today - without permission I still may need it. I don't feel the cold and like Hetty I have the windows open as much as possible. We have our pellet burner now which is better than the wood burner as it's much more adjustable. I wear sandals and polo shirts all through the winter indoors ( and trousers ) only put on slippers if it's a minus temperature.

Kim19 Tue 05-Oct-21 18:36:24

It hasn't kicked in so far. I plan to keep a couple of windows open every day to stimulate airflow so I suppose I will burn more has over the colder months. I try to follow the planet savers' guidelines and max it at 19.

Iam64 Tue 05-Oct-21 18:28:24

Yes, especially as we returned home from 26degrees a few days ago

Hetty58 Tue 05-Oct-21 18:20:18

Callistemon, I have managed to knit one, in squares - but haven't sewn them together yet (tut tut, bone idle here). I do think the dog's claws will catch in it, though, and she gets everywhere. I'll probably put a fleece backing on and give it to a daughter.

FlexibleFriend Tue 05-Oct-21 18:11:40

My heating is hardly ever on, unless it gets really really cold out we have no need to put it on. The house is very well insulated and we have the windows open 24/7. I too usually feel hot rather than cold.

Forsythia Tue 05-Oct-21 18:08:56

Our central heating is not on yet but our gas fire is put on at 4 pm on a low setting to take the chill off. Like others, I’ve got woollen throws that I use and DH never feels cold so he tells me. We battle over the thermostat every year ?

MissAdventure Tue 05-Oct-21 17:58:59

Not yet, but I don't think I need to.
I'm often hot when others are shivering, and I enjoy feeling slightly chilly.

Blondiescot Tue 05-Oct-21 17:54:08

Wow, that's a lot. Ours is about half of that and I think even that's a lot!

annsixty Tue 05-Oct-21 17:47:03

My dual fuel bill is £157 a month and I don’t think that will cover this winter even without a price rise.
I am with EDF.

Hetty58 Tue 05-Oct-21 17:38:15

Some people feel the chill much more than others. I can afford to run the boiler - but old habits die hard and I'm used to lower temperatures.

I do like to open windows and don't like stuffy air. I've stopped leaving them open all day now, just a few hours midday. I think the average household fuel bill is about £100 a month. I'd rather spend on something else - and sit under a blanket (though my kids say I'm a miser).

grannydarkhair Tue 05-Oct-21 17:34:31

No, but I was very tempted to put it on this morning. When I went out, it was perishing, really windy and wet (east coast of Scotland). Because of the windows having to be kept open, the bus was also cold. Methinks it’s time to look out the gloves and woolly hat.

crazyH Tue 05-Oct-21 17:32:26

I don’t understand this - and I doubt anyone knows the answer. I put my thermostat on at 15 degrees so it never gets really cold. And then low and behold, I come down in the morning and the thermostat has turned itself up to 20. ???? Is it a poltergeist ? My heating engineer doesn’t have an answer. Oh I must ask Mr Google - he has an answer for everything ?

rafichagran Tue 05-Oct-21 17:31:35

Yes I have mine on. I put it on 1/10. I know there is a price hike, but I like to be comfortable. I dont get heating allowance, but my partner will get it for the 1st time this year.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 05-Oct-21 17:29:40

Jaxjacky

I don’t think it was insensitive Germanshepherdsmum. The question is ‘have you got your heating on yet?’ It was being answered.

Yes it was but I felt the ‘of course’ was insensitive.

We try to stick it out until November. I'm dreading when we do have it on as DH always wants to turn it off or turn it down. It's a constant battle between us every winter! He'll be even worse this year with the prices going up. ?

A digital thermostat will accurately set your temperature and you can leave it to decide whether it's cold and needs to come on. All you need to do is decide on the temperatures you require at different times of the day. No more arguing and no more touching the heating!

grannyactivist Tue 05-Oct-21 17:11:52

Not yet - but we did get notification from our energy company regarding the hike in bills. We’re in the fortunate position of being able to pay the extra, but I am very worried about those of my clients who are having to use pre-payment meters and already pay over the odds for their energy use. Our local Food Bank is gearing up for an increase of clients throughout the autumn and winter - when the choice for many is to have heat or food I’m so glad FoodBanks are available to help out.

lemongrove Tue 05-Oct-21 17:10:18

Controlled by the thermostat ( like Esspee says) so at the moment the heating is coming on about 6a.m to get the temp up to 20, our normal setting. If it drops below that then the heating kicks in.
