And I really like it! It's funny!

I’m a petite lady (5ft 4ins and size 10 in those days) and we were told we were infertile so adopted DD1. Within six months, I was pregnant with DD2 who bounced into this world at 10lbs 1oz! A long labour, forceps, then forceps under anaesthetic before an emergency Caesarean in the early hours for which the obstetrician arrived attired in his PJ's and an Aran sweater!

I’m also size 10 and narrow hips, actually that should read I was size 10, a long time ago.
Three boys, 8lbs, 7lbs 8oz and a bruiser at 10lbs, they all felt like sh***ing a watermelon. So you’re possibly right. We’ll have to wait for a size sixteen mum to say how much difference it makes.
The fourth was by caesarean, bliss at the time but worse after.

I went from a size 6-8 to an 18 while pregnant with my son .. damn SPD and cravings! Labour was painful and I tore, but it felt very much like a normal period for me. Just with less of the painkillers ?
Though tbf, a 'normal' period for me involves endometriosis and adenomyosis, so probably not that normal for a lot of people ?
Thankfully, my son was 7lbs 3oz, I could not imagine how bad it would be to give birth to a baby weighing over 9lbs!!

I was told with a shoe size 7 I'd have no problem giving birth ... hmmmm ... 1st was 7lb 5oz and very difficult with him spending most of his first 2 weeks in special care, thankfully all went well with his recovery. 2nd son, after doing Weight Watchers and continued through pregnancy, was 9lb4oz which resulted in an emergency cesarean section.
Glad they didn't show a pumpkin giving birth grin

Ouch! I actually adopted my two and, to be honest, the thought of actually giving birth is something I have never felt at ease with. I have been told I have a high pain threshold but find the birth scenes from Call the Midwife terrifying! I am glad I never had to go through with giving birth now I have looked at those pumpkins!

Size 16, shoes size 6, baby 5.5lbs and stitches., fairly quick labour with both.

My poor mum, 5 ft 4in and petite, had to me at home in the late 1940s . The midwife had only done a few deliveries and there was no gas and air. Mum eventually gave birth to me, at ten and a quarter pounds. No wonder I'm an only child.
My first was a long labour with eventual forceps delivery and my second I nearly had in the car park.

No, sodapop, it wasn't, He had probably never even noticed your backside. Whether GP. obstretician or midwife when looking at a pregnant woman the width of the hips gives an idea before you get round to examining the woman of the width of her pelvis.

Small hipped women are often capable of conceiving and gestating babies who are too large for them to give birth to, thus necessitating a caesarian section or a forceps delivery at the very least.

Before modern times such women died in agony, trying unsuccesfully to give birth.

Some of the skeletons said to be male by archaelogists could well be small-hipped women or immature girls. However, I believe length of the leg-bones is also taken into account when deciding whether excavated skeletons are of men or women, if there are no grave goods that indicate which sex the person was.

Dianehillbilly1957 Sun 24-Oct-21 12:31:35

Really glad I'd not seen this when I was expecting my kids!!!! Phew!!!

sodapop Sun 24-Oct-21 12:26:50

I always remember my doctor saying "you have got good child bearing hips "
Was this a polite way of saying a big a* grin

Janetashbolt Sun 24-Oct-21 12:20:58

re midwife apparently it means "with the woman", gleaned from another thread, so male or female is would still be midwife

Moth62 Sun 24-Oct-21 12:15:24

That’s really interesting. I’ve never actually seen the centimetres dilated illustrated so graphically. I think they should keep them for teaching purposes!

jane1956 Sun 24-Oct-21 12:04:16

not busy there then

Growing0ldDisgracefully Sun 24-Oct-21 12:00:03

Ooh ow! Wincing and crossing my legs. Only 1 offspring for me - that was enough. I'm only a 5' 2" little squirt but produced a very long baby - he's 6' 2". Nowadays I hasten to add - not at all time if being born.

Shazzyp Sun 24-Oct-21 11:25:40

Fabulous!

Naninka Sun 24-Oct-21 11:00:54

Love to all midwives - male and female. Even the midwife who married my ex! (She's very nice actually.) x
