The image of the royal family

I know old(er) people are not useless and slung on the scrap heap but…
I have just seen a picture of the Queen and Camilla with the headline that Camilla is going to take on more duties to save the Queen. That makes it that a 74 year old is taking up more work than she is currently doing. Putting aside all prejudices against her I just thought the RF are hardly presenting a dynamic leadership for Britain.
When you look at the RF’s of Europe they present a much more current and contemporary face of monarchy, with their tradition of replacing the head of state at a sensible age.
I think it’s very sad that, if the Queen lives for another ten years, like her mother, then Charles will be 82 and another elderly king.
Do we need younger Kings and Queens to represent us so that the UK is not seen as a doddering old country, or does it make no difference to how we seem to other countries or to ourselves?

She will never abdicate. She knew the distress the abdication of her uncle caused to her parents, and to the country.
She is doing fewer public engagements, but she will not retire unless her health forces her to. Quite right too.

Totally different circumstances . This time Charles would be ready and I’d guess willing, to take on the role, Bertie wasn’t.

Good point Lucca.

The Queen believes that it is her duty to remain in her role until her death , as did her beloved father . He was very ill with cancer and yet remained the King until his end . That is the sense of duty his daughter has and vowed to all those years ago .

Queen Elizabeth is so good at queening that her age adds gravitas.

Charles becomes king, Camilla becomes Queen consort,
The Queen walks and sits behind Charles and Camilla and
behind William and Catherine.

I think William and Katherine should be next in line. I don’t think Charles has the making of a king. He can’t even speak to his son when he rings from America. The situation with Diana was awful. I think he should pass it over. I honestly think that Camilla dresses some times like the Queen Mother, Charles was very close to her.

I recall watching The Crown, the first series. I know it was drama, not documentary, but I remember that Princess Elizabeth always had to curtsey to Queen Mary. Then the first time they met after King George VI had gone, Queen Mary curtseyed to Elizabeth. It was a big moment.

Having to have a change in protocol regarding who walks where isn't a good reason to stick with the status quo. There may be other reasons, but that isn't one of them.

I think you’re overlooking the image that would be portrayed to the world - Charles & Boris what leadership !

I love the Queen. She will never abdicate. She will remain our Queen until her death. That is how it is and will remain. She is quite wonderful and people all over the world admire her.

God Save The Queen!

I see no reason for the Queen to abdicate. She offers stability and continuity at a time when things are changing fast.
No reason why Prince Charles and other royals can’t represent her.
When she dies will be time for Charles to become king.
I’ve had my reservations about him but listening to his clear, forthright and passionate speech at COP26 today I feel he may just be a good king.
Hopefully he will be a more proactive king at least where environmental issues are concerned.
I remember hearing him speak many years ago about climate change, he was laughed at but stuck to his guns. Turns out he knew a thing or two.

I remember watching the Crown too. I remember Philip stepping out of his trousers and leaving them on the floor for a servant to pick up.

I do hope that the monarchy will modernise when Charles is on the throne. All this walking in order, curtseying and bowing, going to bed when the Queen goes to bed, stopping eating when she does, five changes of clothes in a day at Sandringham; it’s all out of the dim and distant past. It’s time it’s changed. How can the monarch relate to the ordinary people with all those protocols that treat the monarch as if she/he were God himself. They are ordinary people just like the rest of us, mortals like us. The divine right of kings is gone.

Calendargirl Mon 01-Nov-21 20:44:22

Lots of things will change when the Queen dies, I’m sure Charles has lots of new and innovative ideas on the monarchy, but is content to wait until then.

The Crown ! I suppose some believe Dr.Who is true too.

4allweknow Mon 01-Nov-21 21:57:30

Considering many in the UK view that the RF do nothing anyway can't see what the difference is if they are young or old.

I don’t mean this at all rudely, but …so what ?

I can't imagine any ex-RN officer doing that!!

My word, everything has to be ship-shape and Bristol fashion, all creases perfect.

The Crown is fiction but I thought Dr Who was real, Anniebach ???

I was absolutely terrified of the daleks when I was little. I really believed they existed and were coming in the dark to get me.

Calistemon Mon 01-Nov-21 22:58:41

Were you hiding behind the sofa?
I was nearly adult when it first started but yes, it was scary!!

Josianne Mon 01-Nov-21 23:06:01

The trouble is there are so many monsters now in Dr. Who that it has gone way beyond being possibly true.

maddyone Mon 01-Nov-21 23:06:57

No I didn’t hide behind the sofa, but I covered my eyes so I couldn’t see them. I also insisted on having the landing light on when I was in bed.

If you cover your eyes the Weeping Angels will get you!
