Premium Bonds…..why, oh why…

I understand the odds of winning are small, so why do I keep winning £25 and not £1,000,000. In my mind, if the odds are so small then the £25 win should be as unlikely as the £1,000,000. I am grateful to have won £25 this month and 3 x £25 last month, but……

My mum bought my daughter £1 one in 1970. She's never won with it.

Went back to check and one prize of £100.?

Jaxjacky Tue 02-Nov-21 20:03:46

Did you get an email muse?

I wrote to the NS&I some months ago to give them a change of address. I received a letter back saying the bonds purchased in the 1970's no longer existed! So I would recommend anybody with old stock, cash them in and buy new ones.

Grannynannywanny Tue 02-Nov-21 20:22:02

I have £30 of bonds purchased in the 1960s. I have had one win of £90 thirty years ago.

harrigran Tue 02-Nov-21 22:42:45

I won £100 this month and generally have a win most months, I generally receive around £600 a year.
Not true that older bonds do not exist, DD has one from 1969, still valid.

Riverwalk Tue 02-Nov-21 22:57:39

I think older ones don't win because they're so small in number compared to today.

Back in the 60s my mother had one, now people can buy up to £50,000.

Well I’ve had nothing this month. From the look of this thread, one of you obviously has the £25 I usually win. Hands up, that fraudster! smile

I have Alexa set up to tell me whether we’ve won or not. I can’t wait for the day she announces that I’m a millionaire. Though as a fortune teller once told me I’d be very, very rich very, very late in my life, perhaps I should be careful what I wish for.

We were out earlier today so I probably missed the knock on the door announcing my million pound win.

Did you get an email muse?

I do but I've got the NS&I prize checker app on my phone so know when the next draw is.

Good luck

I did check my account today and it still shows on record I have a £1 Premium Bond from 1956. It's just that I don't think they get entered. I think my other little group of bonds was from the 1990s and they have never won either.

Sorry JaxJacky I meant to say, because the app says when the draw is, I check that day. A few days after that, I get an email.
www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

Just checked on the website and they list all the big prize winners. Someone holding £100 worth of bonds won £5000 this month.?

DanniRae Wed 03-Nov-21 07:45:00

I won £75 this month and £100 last month!
I find it very exciting every month when I go online to see if I have won anything. I also love that there is no risk involved so I can safely get my money back. I don't love that I encouraged my darling sister-in-law to buy some and she keeps winning more than me hmm

DanniRae Wed 03-Nov-21 07:46:43

Please don't take me to task over my last sentence because I was joking!!

DH has a theory that only the newer bonds go into the draw, Chestnut.

I think he could be right.

That’s my theory too.

I said I knew you were out so I took it for you!! Not sure what I did with it now…sorry!!

I had a friend some years ago who had a lot of success with her bonds. She took them out every January and put them back
the next month.

Shandy57 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:02:06

I haven't got any bonds yet, is the tax man informed if you win?

Maggiemaybe Wed 03-Nov-21 08:05:17

Winnings are tax exempt, Shandy57.

Charleygirl5 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:07:39

Calistemon I do not know where you live but I think most million pound bond winners lived in Bristol.

The more you have the more likely you are to win.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 03-Nov-21 08:11:59

I have £100 of bonds bought in the 1990s. I won £25 the first year and another £25 last year. I bought a lot more this summer but haven’t won anything yet.

Grandma70s Wed 03-Nov-21 08:16:39

Some years ago my son bought £1000 worth, and won £10,000 straight away! Not a penny since, though.

Kim19 Wed 03-Nov-21 08:19:32

Yes, the thrill of the chase does it for me every month especially with current derisory bank interest. I've had two 500 wins in the distant past and regular 50s until Gordon Brown halved it. Still floats my boat after all these years.

annsixty Wed 03-Nov-21 08:30:36

I am away from home for a couple of days and have an email this morning saying I have won a prize but I don’t know my number until I get home.
Will it be big , will it be £25?
The anticipation is great.
I have won £25 for the last two months so probably that, but whatever it is very welcome.

littleflo Wed 03-Nov-21 09:57:56

As interest rates were so low, I invested some matured bond money into premium bonds . This was in early summer. I worked out that, if I won a single £25 this year, I would be better off than the instant access account. DH did the same but for a much greater amount.

I have won £50 but he has won nothing.
