Does anybody know an easy way to open the cap on this mouthwash bottle? I have just spent over 10 minutes trying to open it, even using scissors which slipped and nearly gashed my hand. I give up now ?

There's a gadget you can buy that has all different sizes and also something to help with ring pulls and the yoghurt top thingies. I forget what its called. I have one it helps sometimes but not always. I use rubber gloves for tops which seem to do the trick.

I can actually manage jars and ring pulls and things it’s just this damn mouthwash that is the problem, I did try another brand and it had the same problem. I think it’s because it’s on the cheaper side, if you want to spend £4 on mouthwash then I don’t think you get this problem….?

You can buy a tool specifically for opening these kind of bottles.

Otherwise if a tea towel or pliers don't work, try a piece of non-slip synthetic rubber matting, and use it as you would the tea towel.

Otherwise, go back to the shop and get an nice young shop assistent (male if you are female, female if you are male) to open it for you.

Or do as one old lady I knew. Take it with you to church on Sunday and get one of the other churchgoers to practise Christian charity by opening it for you.

Can you remember the name of the tool please?

Keep your fingers out of the way if using scanners etc.
I've had some slip off and trap my bloody finger!
Ouch!

Well, I was just looking at my printer/scanner and thinking that the lid is quite gentle ...

Go back to the shop where you bought it and ask them to do it for you. I've done that with a jar before and they also struggled.

I have a friend in her 80s who has a weak dominant hand so she struggles to open things.

She lives in a small town and the bus stop is right outside her house. When she struggles to upen things, she waits till it's time for the bus to pass and either asks waiting passengers to open the item or stops the bus and gets the friendly driver to do it. Ingenious!

Just use vodka as mouthwash next time!! ?

Dogsjj Fri 05-Nov-21 14:30:37

Lakeland sell an inexpensive plastic tool help undo ring pulls. It works a treat!

TillyTrotter Fri 05-Nov-21 14:24:54

Buy a different brand of mouthwash next time which hopefully won’t be such a trial that this one was Shinamae.
It’s a bit defeatist but that must have been so annoying…..

Turn the jar over. Pour boiling water round the lid, works for me

MiniMoon Fri 05-Nov-21 14:09:11

It's the washing machine pods boxes that defeat me. The plastic ones with the two tab things that you are supposed to press while opening the lid. Fortunately my dear husband can open them.

I know they have to be secure enough to prevent small children getting in to them, they do look like jelly sweeties.
They also prevent Grannies getting into them too.

I've posted this before in a 'best gadget' thread but these are my 'go to' gadgets for opening jar lids and ring pull cans.
Not much help with the mouthwash bottle though. sad

I agree with the people who suggested taking it back to Tescos.
If shops were inundated with such customers, they would press
manufacturers to provide easier tops. I am elderly and disabled, and often have to wait for my helper to come in to
get things undone, despite having two helpful gadgets.

Hi Folks, haven't read then all. Did anyone suggest, ask a child?

Foxyferret Fri 05-Nov-21 13:58:28

For opening jars like jam, give them a good clout a couple of times on the jar rim with a wooden spoon. Works for me every time. Sometimes you hear the seal pop, sometimes not.

These might be an idea

I have found running the lid of jars under hot water to expand it then using a jar opener tool such as described here works most of the time for me. I also have trouble lifting the lids on shampoo bottles etc as I'm sure the lip has got smaller in recent years. Or am I just weaker now.

dorrieoxles1 Fri 05-Nov-21 13:37:22

I use IKEA scissors. There have a a grip between the handles and the blade. This opens wide and you can safely grip and twist at the same time. There is a gadget fits between the lid and the ridge on the jar and loosens the vacuum. I have a blue one not sure what it’s called.

This is clearly why this is Gransnet!
None of this would make sense to the mumsnetters, and to be fair I think I was scathing of oldies (sic!) who couldn’t open cans and bottles etc!
To be fair I think everything has become more secure due to Elf and Safety!! Bah humbug xx ???

Well, none of my DC nor my DDIL nor DSIL would be scathing.

You'll be old one day (with a bit of luck)
There are many young people who have difficulties too, arthritis is not confined to the elderly.

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 05-Nov-21 13:05:46

joesoap my daughter and I have Arthritis in our hands, we have the pieces of silicone which helps, but neither of us can squeeze the sides of lids and twist them at the same time.
So I use pliers, they squeeze and turn easily.

Joesoap Fri 05-Nov-21 13:02:16

Its a dangerous job opening some things these days, first work out how it is supposed to be opened, then trying to open the bottle,I wonder how people with arthritis in their fingers ever cope. There are so many different ways of opening tops why cant they all be the same, and easy to open at that.
