I didn’t fall in love with comedy; I fell in love with a character named Nigel Molesworth when I was at school and found the books hilarious. I still use the phrase “as eny fule kno” and still love his description of ‘skool dinners’ as “the piece of cod that passeth all understanding”. No hope for me then, or now! I’m still a huge fan of Round the Horne and so is my son. Father Ted, especially the one where the fathers gets lost in the lingerie section of a department store, still has me in tucks! I think the ability to laugh and enjoy comedy, be it zany or sophisticated, is what keeps us sane in this increasingly troubled world.
One of my favourite Father Ted episodes is Speed 3 which parodies the film Speed . It is some sort of a blackmail heist in which a New York Bus (I think) is destined to blow up if it drops below a certain speed.
Father Dougal is driving the booby-trapped milk float (!) then Ted drives alongside to tell Dougal that there's a bomb on board. Dougal's timeless reply is " Who's it fer, Ted ?"
