I’ve surrendered !

I have had long hair all my life and have resisted getting it cut. When I was in my fifties my mother frequently made comments saying I was just too old to have hair nearly waist length. As the years have rolled by unfortunately my hair is no longer my pride and glory, and has become very thin and fine.
It’s been useful to have the length as it’s covered my bald bits but recently I saw my reflection in a shop window and it made me cringe. It looked like thin rats tails.
I took the plunge, went for the chop, and finally surrendered! I now have a short style I can still tuck behind my ears and wish I’d done it years ago ! Easy to wash, and easy to style. So what if my hair is thin - it is what it is. I am so pleased. And for once glad my mother is dead or I’d never hear the end of her chorus of I TOLD YOU SO !

Yes, I did not mean it literally, 3nanny6, but I get the impression (possibly wrongly) that most people who object to long hair on older women are objecting to the long loose look rather than actually to long hair per se.

3nanny6 Tue 23-Nov-21 15:23:56

That's not quite the case Baggs because even with long hair put up then that is a long hair off your shoulders look. In the simmer and when warm I put my hair in a pony-tail then plait it. Other times I put it up and put a nice fancy hair ornament in it. With short hair you cannot do those things unless you use some fake hair which of course can still look attractive.

Wispy, fine, flyaway, short hair can look awfully Borisish.

Baggs Tue 23-Nov-21 14:57:13

Long hair tied up nicely is the same as short hair in effect.

I still have my past shoulder length hair although I do not let it get to waist level. It has been like this always except once I wanted a shaggy cut at the hairdressers and she chopped most of my hair off before I realized what she had done. I went home and cried. That was about 25 years ago and never had it cut like that again.
It has chunky blonde highlights all through and there is no grey at all which I suppose I am lucky at that. I had the highlights re-done last week and a trim so it is looking good at the moment. I have even had younger women in shops pay me a compliment on the colour and condition of my hair. I cannot see myself really going for short hair.

I've just had my 59 + 1 as I call it. I will go to the next decade when I'm ready LOL

My hair is long. Not as long as OP. It's down to the lower back top.

Mine is still thick and in good condition. Coloured ofcourse. I do not do grey. Never will. I'm a rebel and always will be.

I go to the hairdressers 6 weekly and spend alot of time and money on my hair. Its my pride and joy. I am a Leo so my mane is top priority.

I started growing my hair in my 40s and kept it that way. I wasn't allowed for it to be long when I was young. I guess I'm living life as I choose and feel free to as an adult. Started finding me in my 40s when I broke free from an awful marriage.

If it gets to the stage it needs cutting shorter I will do it however until then it stays long

I have long grey hair about half way down my back. It doesn’t have great texture, on a good day its nice on a bad day I look like the wicked witch of the west. I don’t have a pretty face or good bone structure but you know what I really don’t care. I love my long hair and my husband loves my long hair and that’s all that matters

Hetty58 Fri 12-Nov-21 15:28:55

I've had mine cut to shoulder length. It's so much easier to wash and dry, and has more bounce to it.

This is lovely. A small gesture to a stranger to give much comfort x
I have my great aunt's hair that the cut off to be 'bobbed' in the 1930s. It is the colour of mine pre greying and colouring. Some people may think it's creepy but it's a lovely reminder of her as she was grey and granny permed by the time I came along and she cherished it.

I've had long hair since I was about 12 years old except for a brief spell in my late 20's or early 30's when I had a bob. My main problem then was that I overheat badly in hot weather and need to clip or tie it up otherwise I have wet hair round my neck which feels horrible.
My mother wouldn't let me grow it long as she was convinced I'd be more likely to get nits, and said "You can grow it long when you go to grammar school as you'll be with 'cleaner girls'!" We now know that nits prefer short hair, probably because it gets less brushing! As a result short hair seems like a punishment to me.
I too have very thin hair but my bald bits only really show when I get really hot as I sweat, and the wet hair separates and no longer covers well.
I don't think my long hair looks awful at 67 though long hair does on some people. A few years ago I met a friend I'd not seen for a long time and she'd gone very grey. Her very long hair made her look a bit like a witch!
I'm not sure if I'll ever have the courage to go short again, though as I get older the overheating does seem slightly less of a problem, so maybe.

Should have had it cut when your mum was here ..she would probably have loved it ..cos she loved you

FarNorth Thu 11-Nov-21 17:54:47

I'm the same GardenofEngland .
I'm planning on keeping it long tho.

hollysteers Thu 11-Nov-21 17:51:25

Mine is just below my shoulders, brunette with highlights. What with age and radiotherapy (?) it’s thinner, so I often wear a halo extension in a similar colour which thickens it up. It’s on a nylons wire and I cut them myself as don’t want it too long. They are cheap enough. The effect is so good and quick.
Botox yesterday so I am going down fighting.

GardenofEngland Thu 11-Nov-21 17:35:51

I had pixie cut for years but let it grow during lockdown 2years on its long enough to put in a little ponytail..just. it us very thick and everybody says it's lovely and don't go short again but part of me misses the crop!

GraceQuirrel Thu 11-Nov-21 17:25:59

It’s not the length that matters as we age, it’s the condition. My hair has got frizzier with age, was always thick anyway, so impossible for me to have long though I always wanted that. A chin or shoulder length bob has always worked for me.

Joesoap Thu 11-Nov-21 16:54:38

I have always prefered short hair I have mine cut once a month, this time it is five weeks since my last cut and its driving me mad its so unrully and makes me look years older than I am, and I am old enough thank you.I cant wait until next week when I am going to have it cut even shorter!

Gabrielle56 Thu 11-Nov-21 16:50:00

Glad that we're all happy o try new things! I've had mid/short/long hair at various times and it's always been a crime for a woman to sport very short hair, no matter how much it's hits! What IS it with fellas and long hair?! Beyond me....glad my DH always loves my still short hair and it does suit me better still now my chops are my main features ?

Calendargirl Thu 11-Nov-21 16:28:42

Mine looks like narrowboatnan’s hair, sort of, but mine is a pewter grey colour, and always wisping out messily.

My DH doesn’t like my hair, but knows his commenting on it will make me cross!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 11-Nov-21 15:55:46

Can you chuck your husband overboard narrowboatnan?

pen50 Thu 11-Nov-21 15:37:03

I'm 65 and have been quite lucky with my hair so far, not much thinning. I've kept it long and get a few ash blonde highlights every couple of months to help disguise the growing out dyed bits - I'm not very grey yet but I prefer to transition gradually.

Marvellous Ginpin. If any of you have your long hair cut off, please donate it to The Little Princess Trust. If you contact them, they will tell you how to plait it, cut it and donate.
The hair clinic I go to for my hair system, has a lot to do with this brilliant charity. My clinic helps children with cancer and alopecia free of charge.

narrowboatnan Thu 11-Nov-21 15:26:45

Mine hasn’t been cut since just before lockdown. It’s now just below shoulder length and I usually put it in a kind of up-do held together by a banana shaped clip. I was feeling quite good about it until my DH said that I should get it cut because, when it’s not in it’s up-do, it looks like - and I quote - ‘OLD LADY HAIR!’ I have an appointment at the hairdressers on the 26th of this month! Old Lady Hair indeed! Hah!

Calendargirl Thu 11-Nov-21 14:44:18

My hair looks a mess! I am absolutely useless with hair, it’s just above my shoulders, and I have it up in a clip most of the time. I envy people who just twist their hair in a messy bun or ponytail. I just can’t do it.

I should have it cut I suppose, but have grown all my layers out over the last couple of years. If I then don’t like it…..

Musicgirl Thu 11-Nov-21 14:28:45

I am sure you look great. I think long grey hair can be very ageing but each to their own. I am in my mid-late fifties and my hair is the one part of my appearance l am happy with. It is still its natural reddish brown colour and very thick. I have let it grow to below my shoulders since lockdown (it was always on my shoulders before) and I enjoy wearing different coloured hair bands. The other day someone thought I was in my early forties - nice but she must have poor eyesight ?.

JeanneLeFol Thu 11-Nov-21 13:34:32

Ginpin - how lovely to send your hair to help the children ! I’d never heard of that.
And how lucky you are to have a daughter who’s a hairdresser !
I expect your hair was in beautiful condition. Mine was so hideous they’d probably have sent it back ?
