I have recently heard about this but don’t think I would be keen to try it,have any of you tried it and what do you think?

maddyone Fri 12-Nov-21 12:57:34

I’d never heard of it before this thread. I think I’ll give it a miss.

I love tapioca. ?

I love tapioca too - always have a tin of Ambrosia tapioca in the cupboard

Lilydrop Fri 12-Nov-21 12:21:09

Is it sago?

Auntieflo Fri 12-Nov-21 11:54:31

I haven't tried, or heard of, Bubble tea. But I love Tapioca.
The frogspawn one and the other type.
Can't remember what it is called.

We’ve recently had a shop open in my town, my GC love it so I tried it and it’s lovely. To me, it sounded like an odd concept but I tried it and it didn’t disappoint.

I love all milk puddings but dont think Id try this. Whats wrong with a normal cup of tea or coffee.

My teen GDs have been fans of this for quite some time. Not that I have tried it. It doesn't seem to have filtered down to SW Wales yet.

freedomfromthepast Fri 12-Nov-21 04:02:17

My teens love it. I tried it once and sucked in one of the tapioca balls through the straw and nearly choked to death. I decided, for my safety, that I did not like bubble tea any longer.

A lot of places serve it here, mostly Asian owned shops. They also sell it on the uni campuses, have done for many years.

Love it! One opened up in the village in the hole in the wall shop tiny shop on the high street and it is EXTREMELY popular. I tried the matcha bubble tea on the shop girls recommendation and it was delicious.

Sometimes you can also get them made with strips of flavoured jelly. I like those.

I love tapioca. ?

Surely it's not normal to love tapioca? ?

I only put one in my mouth once, never again!
Frogspawn as it was known at school.

I don't think I'll be trying this tea.

Dépends what one’s interpretation of normal is Cali ?

Frogspawn at our school too.

I had first dibs on an extra helping from any girl who didn’t want hers. Wonderful stuff.

GDs quickly tired of this craze, finding it too sweet and too expensive to spend pocket money on. My treat at their age was Creamola Foam.

CafeAuLait Fri 12-Nov-21 00:31:02

It's not so bad but too sweet for me and I can only handle so much of the bubbles. I've only had a taste of one. You can order them without sugar, so it's not necessary that they are as sweet as regular.

There are two different types. The one I like is basically fruit juice with gel balls that have juice in them that you drink through a wide straw. The other kind is made from hot milk (or water - not sure) and has the tapioca in it.

To buy the juice one you choose a flavour (eg apple juice) from one menu for the drink and another for the balls (eg cherry) from a different menu, and they put the balls in the drink, so there are numerous permutations of drinks that you can mix and match.

Now I'm intrigued. Tapioca doesn't 'pop' ? - does it? They were white / clear balls - how do they become black?

Only ever had it as a milk pudding - and Sago.

Doodledog Thu 11-Nov-21 23:24:53

I love bubble tea. I haven't tried the hot milky version with tapioca, but the fruity stuff with the popping bubbles is great fun.

I think it depends on the flavour. I don't like matcha so that cuts out some of them. But I've had mango juice 'tea' with mango bubbles. Mmmmm

agnurse Thu 11-Nov-21 22:49:33

I love bubble tea but only have it as an occasional treat.

Same for me Blossomming. Very high levels of sugar and carbs. Doctor has told my GD not to drink them everyday or try to stop completely. She was having skin problems. No nutritional value at all.

I know someone who works in a bubble tea shop. They are made from different flavoured syrups and tapioca ‘bubbles’
Absolutely no nutritional value at all, worse than ‘full fat’ coke!

I tried it when both GDs went through a phase of drinking it. A pleasant taste but nothing to warrant the price in my opinion.

Baggs

Hmm. Might be worth a go. Centuries since I've eaten tapioca.

Only ever had tabioca at school…?

Blossoming Thu 11-Nov-21 10:17:56

Not for me, it contains a lot of sugar.
