Anyone on here from Norfolk OR now a naturalised Norfolk broad?

NfkDumpling Tue 16-Nov-21 11:38:08

Respect Bluebell I'm one of those weird women who can't resist paddling whatever the weather. But I draw the line at going in further than my knees unless the weather is balmy. Its not the going in, its the coming back out into the cold air!

When DH was leaving the Army many moons ago we were looking at settling in Norfolk - Diss area. House prices were very affordable then. For one reason and another, we decided against living there, but we have spent many wonderful holidays in Norfolk and love it. Oddly enough, in all the time we have spent there, I have never been to Norwich. DH has, as his firm had an office down there he had to visit, but it’s still on my ‘to do’ list!

We are on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, not far from Diss too! Lovely part of the world. Naturalised Suffolkers !

I remember House in the Clouds and Thorpeness well Gingster lovely area.

Gingster Tue 16-Nov-21 08:32:07

My Dh was talking to a Danish business associate. Danish chap said ‘I’m off on holiday to England.
Dh asks where to?
Danish chap says Suffolk.
Dh says where abouts?
Danish chap says House in the Clouds at Thorpeness.
It’s about 2 miles from our holiday home.
Indeed a small world.

Nfk see my previous post. We left home on a Friday afternoon. It took us over an hour to get to the A17, normally it takes 30mins!

My DH refuses to use the A17! If we're going north we go across to the A11 and all the way around. Its faster!!

We've lived in Norfolk for over 40 years. Live in a big town to the south of the county, not near the coast unfortunately and can't afford to have a holiday home there. I originally lived in Cambridgeshire and husband is from Kent.

I was visiting family in America and went into a large store. The lady serving me said " oh you are from England, I lived there for a while, a little place called Saxmundham" what a small world as I was living a few miles away in Lowestoft.

merlotgran Mon 15-Nov-21 18:01:58

I lived on the Suffolk/Norfolk border near Diss for two years then moved near Swaffham for two years before moving to Cambridgeshire.

I went to a silver wedding celebration in Swaffham two months ago and couldn’t believe how busy it is now compared to the sleepy town I knew and loved in the mid seventies.

I think the same goes for everywhere now though.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-Nov-21 17:39:44

all the way from …

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-Nov-21 17:39:14

Gosh NorfolkDumpling, that poor lady all the from Saxmundham! Was she ever accepted or always a furriner?!

gillgran Mon 15-Nov-21 17:22:32

I've said on GN before, that I was born & bred in Norfolk.
I still have family there.

We live over the border, in Cambs., now, (for the past 53 years!).

Love Norfolk so much that we bought a plot by the sea in the N.W. of the county. We have our little home-from-home there.

Just been to close down for the winter, we will visit to check on the place over the winter, (& get our "Norfolk-Fix!).

Roll-on next Easter, when we will be "regulars" again.! smile

BlueBelle

Went for a sea swim last night sodapop cold but still and a bit magical with the moon coming up

That sounds absolutely fabulous, BlueBelle. Are you in England?

NfkDumpling Mon 15-Nov-21 16:22:42

Guess where I'm from. Still here. A born and inbred Norfolk Dumpling. I've been doing my and DH's family tree over the last year and its scary! Norwich-over-the-water and the Broads up to the coast is 'my' bit, back as far as I can go. There was a distant 4xgreat grandmother who came from Saxmundham!

The advantage of living here is that when we go away on holiday everyone is just arriving into the county and when we get back the queues of traffic are going the other way!

PamelaJ1 Mon 15-Nov-21 14:34:36

Gagajo you can always find a beach up here with lots of space left.
The traffic has been worse this year but compared to the wider world it’s still not too bad. Just time your departure from the county via Kings Lynn to avoid the busy times, the end of half term for example!

sodapop Mon 15-Nov-21 12:35:39

Well done BlueBelle I can imagine how lovely it was despite the cold.

GagaJo Mon 15-Nov-21 10:54:17

Yes, I remember the traffic and the crowded beaches. It's because the weather is milder there. I use Northumberland beaches now. Just as pretty, far less people. But that's because it's bl**dy cold up here!

PamelaJ1 Mon 15-Nov-21 09:53:53

We moved here 37 years ago .
I’ve lived all over the place but feel at home under the big blue sky, well maybe it’s not so blue today.
The best beach ever is not far away, Norwich is lovely. What’s not to like?
Well maybe the traffic this year because of Covid the whole world was here. Everyone is welcome, it helped the local economy but goodness me sometimes we had to use our local knowledge to get anywhere. Still, good for the brain cells!

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-Nov-21 09:40:48

I live near the North Norfolk coast. Retired here after many happy holidays in the area and love it. There are parts of Norfolk I’m not so keen on and a great deal of poverty in both rural and urban areas.

GagaJo Mon 15-Nov-21 09:24:06

I've also lived in Suffolk sodapop. I think to non East Anglian natives, it all seems like one homogenised area. But to us Natives, they're distinct areas!

I think the Norfolk beaches are very similar to Northumberland Kali. Just a lot colder in Northumberland!

emmasnan Mon 15-Nov-21 09:21:51

I'm from Norfolk but left in my late teens. Some people love it but I wouldn't go back.
