Water board advice?

I’ve just read the information given on my latest water board missive. Apparently we are only supposed to take a 4 minute shower when we shower. Really! How much of you could you wash in 4 minutes? I think I’d get a foot and perhaps lower leg clean but the rest of me wouldn’t even get wet. Who are the idiots that came up with this idea, perhaps they’re off lying down in roads somewhere so they don’t need to take showers.

I shower everyday, hair every other and that sets me up for the day, only hands and face/ teeth after that. Not sure How long it takes but I don't hang around. I will time myself tomorrow!

I think 4 minutes is manageable I probably take that or a bit more but could cut down to 4 I do wash my short hair every day in the shower but that takes about a minute, then soap all over, clean teeth rinse it all off and bingo
I ll time me tomorrow

People are really judgemental and insisting they are always right on Gransnet just now on lots of threads. I've never timed myself but don't linger in the shower however I wash my hair twice a week and have longish hair so it takes longer than when I had my really short haircut. DH takes far longer but it is because he had a stroke. I'm just grateful he can actually do it himself!

Some years ago our water board, wanting me to get a meter, said that average household use included two baths or showers and two washing machine loads per week!

Just out of interest I timed myself this morning and even with warming up time the water ran only two and a half minutes. I was pleasantly surprised although I didn't wash my hair so that would take a bit longer. I use shower gel on a sponge as that gives a good all over lather. My husband is similarly speedy. (We don't own a bath.)

I have a lovely long soak in the bath every other day. There is more to bathing than just cleanliness.

GagaJo Thu 18-Nov-21 08:55:47

I used to be a shower twice a day person. Then as I got older, it started to dry out my skin. So I cut down to once a day. But current advice is that daily is too often. So now it's about every 2nd or 3rd day (washing in between of course).

Better for your skin and for the environment. Although, if I were going out of the house for work daily, I'd want my morning shower to wake me up. I often bath with my DGS. He loves it and it saves water, doubling up. NOT a relaxing bath but he's a joy.

Anyway this is nothing new, been the advice for a few years.

You don’t need long to have a good shower, hygiene doesn’t mean scrubbing yourself with gallons of water. Once upon a time we had weekly baths, one in one out. We should think ourselves lucky to have something that many people don’t, clean fresh running water. Restricting showering time is the least we can do to conserve it.

It's amazing isn't it? feel the guilt you plebs for having a 7 minute shower whilst we take massive bonuses and pump all your excrement into the sea hmm

lemsip Thu 18-Nov-21 07:52:20

4 minutes shower yes, get in wet all over soap all over, rinse off and out.
Can't afford to run up water bill.

Elspeth45 Thu 18-Nov-21 07:51:26

4 minutes is quite long for a shower! Easy to get all the bits clean in that time.

Dibbydod, perhaps for those of us who are widowed, disabled, unable to leave the house, have no living relatives or friends the mundane is a way of filling time before we flip into insanity. Perhaps we are unable to lead an enjoyable life and just get through each day as best we can. I’m so glad you have an enjoyable life albeit a patronising one.

I've often see people boasting on here about how often they shower, at least once a day or more, how often they wash their sheets and towels etc. Seems they want to be seen as godly and virtuous.

I think the same thing when I read posts like this , surly can’t really be true , why would people spend valuable life time doing these things when there is so much more to life to enjoy ?…must lead very boring lives .

Dibbydod Thu 18-Nov-21 00:04:54

I just jump in the shower , have quick wash down then jump back out again , I hate lingering in the shower as can’t wait to get dried , warm and dressed again , but I still feel clean and fresh like I’ve been in there for much longer .

I don’t waste any water, and I mean any
So it’s in shower, wet hair, water off, shampoo. Wet flannel, wash all over, rinse off.
I reckon I’m well within 1 min for whole shower and shampoo.

If I did that, I would waste more water waiting for my combi boiler to fire up again and get hot water through to the shower - furthest room from the boiler so I have to run it for several minutes before it is warm enough!

I have to do the same in the kitchen although in the summer I save some of the cold or tepid water to use on my patio pats. I tend to wash my hands in cold water rather than wait for the hot water to run through.

I can easily shower in four minutes, even when I wash my hair which has never been long. I often wonder how on earth the younger -male - members of the family manage to spend up to fifteen minutes in the shower.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 17-Nov-21 22:25:37

I can easily manage in four minutes unless I’m washing my hair as it’s long but I’m in and out as quickly as possible.

Yes, that's what I do, 25Avalon, and I understand that that is known as a Australian shower. (Does that make sense,nanna8 ?) To be fair, it doesn't work with some kinds of shower as the water goes cold and then has to heat up again, but those of us who can, probably should do it.

I do know what a Pommie shower is.

It’s obvious that some people on here have no concept of what a precious resource water is.

Exactly. Many countries already in water poverty. It'll reach us eventually and then it'll be a splash with a bucket of water that's reused for the car / plants etc.

Been there, done that in 1976!
With two lots of terry nappies to wash as well.

My hair is thick and takes some rinsing, I d9nt take long to shower but probably longer than 4 minutes..

Such a waste of water.

It isn't dirt, it is hygeine.
