Horsehair mattress

This is a bit random I know but for years and years my late father slept on a horsehair mattress. My brother insisted on buying him an up-to-date modern mattress which he slept on for about two months before demanding that the new matress be put up in the loft and the horsehair one brought down. God knows how old it was, must’ve been at least 80 years old and when I think of what might have been living in it it makes me shudder but dad was happy as Larry with his horse hair mattress

We had an ancient horsehair mattress (handed down from a relation when we set up home) which we slept on for well over 30 years.

Two years ago we changed it for a modern mattress and every single night I miss my beloved old horsehair mattress. Oh the comfort, cool when you need it, warm when you need it familiarity of that old mattress. I know where your dad is coming from and wish I'd had his good sense to keep the old one. If I had the new one would be in the loft.

I remember my nana having a horsehair mattress years ago, just thinking about it makes me itch all over.

Ooh, I’ve just remembered that I think my Nan had one in her ‘back bedroom’. It would have been slept on by my mom and aunty when they were little.
It certainly felt different to any other mattress I’ve slept on.
Were / are they very deep?

From what I can remember not very deep at all…. At least dad’s wasn’t,obviously I can’t speak for other mattresses ?

That made me smile Shinamae
I did wonder, when it was mentioned about moving them about. You couldn’t have moved that beast for love nor money.
I will have to ask my aunty if she knows what it was.
I notice that all the time, now my Nan has gone, I’ve got no one to ask about past stuff anymore sad

I seem to remember horse hair mattresses but I can’t remember if I slept on one or not I would think horsehair is quite soft thinking if the tail and mane isn’t it ? I know nowt about horses

They are still available, though very expensive. There’s a company in Wales makes them and they cost over £1,000.

I wonder if wool ones are as good as horsehair? Probably just as expensive....

Perhaps my Nan’s was wool, that would be heavy wouldn’t it…
