GP Surgery and Data Protection

I went to my GP tonight to put in a prescription, to gain access you go through a porch with two doors either end. It is often used as a cut through.
Tonight when I went to the reception desk, I was told the clerical papers to request the prescription are in this porch, it asks for your name, address, DOB, and prescription required. You then have to put it in a flimsy wicker basket with a lid you open and it has no lock.
I usually do my prescription online via the app, but it seems to have a problem at the moment. I was uncomfortable leaving this amount of information here in a unattended place, with lots of footfall, given the amount of information you have to give.
I took the written request to the receptionist and was told to put it in the box. I said no as I felt there was a data protection breach.
I must say I was shocked that everyone had access to my details. If the box was more sturdy, locked and you put your request in the top like a post box I would not have minded.
I am posting this for others opinions, as I am feeling very tired, I had a busy day at work and dont know if perhaps I am being a bit unreasonable.

I think you have a valid point, one that the surgery obviously hadn't considered.

I think you are right and am very surprised that this is allowed.At the pharmacy I worked in we had a box for repeat prescriptions but it was a post style box that could only be opened by a key.

I wouldn't mind anyone seeing my prescription but I do feel some mischievous persons might remove some and that would prove difficult for me. Yes, not the cleverest arrangement.

My surgery has the same system for samples to be dropped off and for prescriptions, in the porch. The boxes are both lockable and metal, similar to post boxes. Why not email the practice manager with your concerns, it should be very simple to rectify?

It's a perfectly reasonable objection. Look at the trouble we go to to keep some sort of confidentiality. I would certainly email the practice manager.

Yes I think I will, I agree lockable and metal would be fine. I will do that tommorow.
