Diana and Charles Engagement

I was watching a documentary about Princess Diana on Netflix last night and started wondering what public reaction would have been if William or Harry had got engaged, in their early 30s, to a 19 year old teenager who had only been on the scene for a few months.

I think there would have been considerable disquiet, not the general delight and cheering that greeted the announcement in 1981.

Obviously even then some people felt the whole thing was ridiculous, but there was also huge public support for the marriage.

Times have changed.

I dont think it's the age gap more the age they both were at the time. So mid twenties and late thirties is a different scenario.
And just to put the cat amongst the pigeons I think Meghan is more beautiful than either Kate or Diana.

They needed Charles to marry somebody who hadn’t got much in the way of sexual baggage ( or the media would have had a field day!) 11 or 12 years isn’t a huge difference, my own parents had 10 years between them ( older Mother.)

I never th she was beautiful. Good looking, elegant and impeccably groomed, but not beautiful in the way Princess Grace was for example.
Kate is beautiful. I have seen her in real life and she really is lovely.

I agree, having seen her once, good looking, glamorous at times but not beautiful at all.

I don't care what any of them look like, actually.
It's just that diana has been dead for years, the forum is miserable, and people getting wound up about the royals seems a sure way to make it more dismal.

I am in my fifties and I would certainly develop behaviours if I were to marry into the royal family.
It is also useful to get to know your partner prior to marriage.

I would settle for Kate's mediocrity happily!!

Me too!

We don't want her to look like a film star, we want her to do the job and show empathy to people - and look reasonably presentable.

She's an attractive young woman, perhaps too thin, with glorious hair.
She scrubs up well, too, for special occasions.

Now, shall we dissect the looks of the males of the family?

He’s called Andrew Parker Bowles.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 17:05:47

I only read it in the book about Diana, but apparently he was rather smitten until he got to know her, her behaviours and issues.
I think he soon went off her, because he just couldn't be doing with her histrionics.

Well, I'd like to believe charles was at least a little smitten.
It really doesn't reflect well on him if not.
There is a name for people who just use others, with no thought for their feelings.

I think he was but they were both too needy to make a success of their marriage.

So would I.

I find Kate to be very mediocre.

Beswitched Wed 08-Dec-21 16:53:10

And was Charles ever really smitten?

I’m making no comments on her character but she was incredibly stylish too, not just “correctly” dressed.

Wasnt she beautiful though?
No wonder charles was smitten.

Undeniably.

Parsley3 Wed 08-Dec-21 16:40:58

Ah, but who can verify the facts? See the Fake Sheik post above.

The countess of Wessex nearly lost the plot ? Rubbish ,

Don’t you remember the Fake Sheik? After that debacle, the Countess had to give up paid employment.

I think Diana had an unrealistic fairy tale view of Charles and being a princess. She was only 19. Then it all unraveled horribly and her dream turned into a nightmare. In those days it was still held that the future king had to marry a virgin. Things have moved on a pace since then. People now routinely live together before getting married so have a better idea of compatibility before committing. If Charles and Diana had done the same maybe things would have turned out differently.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 16:35:28

Parsley by looking at facts and listening to what they say .

On here, apparently.

Anniebach Wed 08-Dec-21 16:31:31

Agree Framilode and she wanted to please her father
