In my childhood our drain was joined to our neighbour's and blocked regularly. My poor father had the job of unblocking it and could be heard muttering awful comments about the man next door. This man was notoriously mean and used to bring home offcuts from the printers where he worked to use as loo paper. The firm printed calendars!

and old drainage unable to cope. I use Spirits of Salt from the plumbers merchants. Pour in leave it for an hour or so and flush. Amazing stuff, and it super cleans the bowl at the same time. We also have flexible drain rods that can get over and around the bends. A plumber once told me never to use quilted toilet paper as the process that makes it quilted prevents it breaking down after it's flushed.
