I never knew that…….

My lovely neighbour (totally impractical!) told me this morning she was distressed as her lavatory was blocked and she had tried various methods to remedy this!
They mostly involved hot water, soda crystals and a stick.?

I asked why she hadn’t used a plunger, she says she didn’t have one and they were only for sinks anyway!
I explained a long handled plunger was a necessity in every home ( particularly if inhabited by a male) she left thinking I was bonkers to use a plunger in a lavatory.

What didn’t you know?

In my childhood our drain was joined to our neighbour's and blocked regularly. My poor father had the job of unblocking it and could be heard muttering awful comments about the man next door. This man was notoriously mean and used to bring home offcuts from the printers where he worked to use as loo paper. The firm printed calendars!

Our loos block up regularly. Usually my fault blush and old drainage unable to cope. I use Spirits of Salt from the plumbers merchants. Pour in leave it for an hour or so and flush. Amazing stuff, and it super cleans the bowl at the same time. We also have flexible drain rods that can get over and around the bends. A plumber once told me never to use quilted toilet paper as the process that makes it quilted prevents it breaking down after it's flushed.

I had that problem when I first tried quilted paper. No problem with the ordinary ones.

What on earth do you people eat?

Neither in my parents' home nor in my own has excrement blocked a toilet.

We had to insist on a teenage son not using about half a roll of paper to blow his nose (that is not a euphemism, by the way) as so much paper at once was more than the drain could cope with, and in my childhood home a blockage was revealed as being causde by the old fired clay outside drain having cracked and filled up with autumn leaves and soil.

I use a toilet ‘snake’ . Bendy metre long metal rod….. I’ve never had to use it yet! But lent it to my daughter ….. works a treat! She now owns one!

On a random note, take a look at the Bristol Stool Chart.........if you're not capable of blocking the loo you might not be pooing properly! Just saying ?‍♀️

Never heard of this before but sanitary products floating down the drive yes, Daughters and grandchildren with bath toys small enough to flush . I once used a plunger on the Kitchen sink and broke the dishwasher the drain pipes from both were interconnected. blush

My dear mother .. Can't believe how much loo roll she used and went down that toilet
Needless to say got blocked, quick look on Google before I phoned a plumber suggested put washing up liquid or shampoo in the loo pour on hot water leave about 5 mins.. Worked a treat... Worth a shot.

Nannan2 Fri 10-Dec-21 12:15:02

Yes i think its a plumbing problem, if the loo cant handle big loads? my downstairs loo is fine but upstairs the plumbing is not as powerful it seems!

This is nothing to do with toilets but to do with the question "What didn't you know?" I knew a mule was the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse but I never knew until today that there was such a thing as a Hinny which is the offspring of a male horse and female donkey. Did others know that?

I've been married and running a home for 51 years and only needed to unblock a loo once and that was in DDs student house. I put a black bin bag over an old mop, tied it on nice and tight and it worked really well.

I keep old vileda super mops to unblock loos. I always have a new one which I use specifically to clean ceiling height cobwebs.

Aveline Fri 10-Dec-21 11:52:45

We have one newer loo which seems to have a very narrow outlet and can be blocked easily by cat poos being put down there when cleaning out the litter tray. They are very big cats but even so. Luckily,we also have an older loo that seems to swallow up whatever is put down it.

I use biological washing powder solution in bowl of hot water. Leave it for a few hours then flush. Repeat as needed it usually does the trick

I bought a chocolate log yesterdaygrin

downtoearth Fri 10-Dec-21 11:35:39

Both son and grandaughter are prize winning log producers, our weapon of choice is a metal coat hanger.
Fortunately son has his own home but always saves one up for when he visits.

I would have done link for Amazon but not techy enough to do links?

theworriedwell Fri 10-Dec-21 11:22:29

I'm puzzled at this seeming to be such a regular problem, poo knives and breaking up logs? I've never heard of it. At one time 4 men in the house, DH and 3 sons. Maybe I have super plumbing or something?

Nannan2 Fri 10-Dec-21 11:22:25

Every home needs the 'MR LUIGI' toilet plunger- its a special one for toilets- its about £12-13 on AMAZON but its an absolute god send for dealing with this kind of 'jobby'?ive sons who blocks it like this regularly- (both sons each blame the other) ? but i recommended the Mr Luigi recently to my eldest DD, for same reason and she sings its praises too now! Its worth the money as it works every time, whereas before i was
spending a small fortune on potions in bottles that are expensive but dont work!! ?

My go tos for blocked loos are buckets of hot (from the tap, not the kettle) water, or failing that, my trusty toilet sabre - unfortunately no longer made - a long piece of hard plastic with a 90° bend at the end. Used first of all to pull out as much of the embedded paper etc as possible, then to poke a hole through the remaining bung. Has always worked and easy to clean/sanitise afterwards.

If only plugs of hair and soap in the drain were so simple!

annodomini Fri 10-Dec-21 10:12:40

Without a man in the house, I am quite capable of blocking my loo all by myself - I blame that 'quilted' toilet paper - and also capable of breaking the plunger by using it too vigorously. Following advice given by Kim Woodburn (remember 'How Clean is your House'?) to use a rubber glove inside a black bin bag, I retrieved the broken plunger and unblocked the loo at the same time.
Memo to self: remember to buy another, stronger, plunger.

Some people have a poop knife. Basically, a dedicated knife that you use to break up particularly large logs so you don't block the loo. (I'm serious. No, we do not have one.)

I have a friend who has one of these. Gag. No way could I do that. I'd add vomit to the blockage!

GagaJo Fri 10-Dec-21 10:09:47

I have a special loo plunger. I can't remember when I got it, but at least 15 years ago. It works everytime. I even loaned it to a friend recently, because her landlord was unable to unblock her loo. My trusty plunger did the job first time.
