I went into MY bank, the HSBC and withdrew money from the cash point. I needed to exchange the notes for one and two pound coins. I walked towards the teller point and could hear shouting. It was an assistant trying to get my attention.
I said that I needed to exchange the note for coins.
I was promptly told, “the bank do not handle cash.”
“But you are a bank! My bank”
“But we do not handle money” said the assistant while looking at me as though I was the mad one!
“I need coins! You are a bank!”
“You can try the Post Office! she replied.
I had to keep my dignity in tact and not allow the temper rising in me to surface and leave the premises furious and bewildered.

There is a machine in our bank where you post all your coins and it pays the money into your bank account. I love it but had to laugh one Christmas when it spewed out a chocolate coin I had put in the jar by mistake. I shove most coins in there and last time got $150 worth, great way to save painlessly.

I want a machine like yours Nanna8 there is one at Sainsbury's but they charge commission.
Even online banking ask you to check you are not being scammed before allowing you to withdraw your own hard-earned money.

I needed cash twice today. Carpark charges and a tip for a waitress.

I came across some old style paper bank notes. Should I pay them into a bank or keep them to sell on eBay in a few years time?

I use small change for coffees mostly ,otherwise I use credit cards but when it is only a few dollars it seems easier to use cash. My hairdresser is cash only, probably some sort of tax fraud but as far as I’m concerned I mind my own because they are cheap and give good cuts.
