My neighbour has an aged aunt in a home, with dementia. She fell and broke her hip, caught a chest infection, the very common story. He was called one day to be advised that they would stop AB’s and just keep her comfortable and he could come and say his goodbyes, which he did.

He phoned next morning, only to be told that auntie was up, showered, dressed, demanding a second breakfast and was zipping round the unit with a wheelie frame! That was in the summer and she’s still with us.

I used to work in care of the elderly, and this sort of thing happened quite often.
I had imagined that medical staff always knew when the end was about to happen but it seems not.

I remember asking my 92 year old uncle what kept him so active, fit and well 'Willpower' he said.

I also remember my Nan sitting up in bed and asking for some soup after being very poorly at 87 I was walking on air thinking she had turned the corner in Nans case the nurses second suggestion was correct and she slept the next day and didn’t wake up
I hope your Aunt gets her summer clothes and enjoys another warm weather season She sounds a real trooper

I remember thinking my mother was near the end but she perked up when they stopped giving her sleeping tablets! So do check the medication they're on and what each one does.

I agree Chestnut, checking medication is vital. When my mum was in care , I took great interest in the medication she was given ! We were called one morning at 2am , the carer said she was refusing medication and would I go. I had no idea why she was being given medication at 2am . When I arrived she was very distressed , she had dementia but this behaviour was very unusual. The nurse gave me a tablet and asked me to see if I could persuade her to take it. I was very disturbed but offered mum the tablet, because it was me, she took the tablet. It was lilac in colour - I remember it well! After she had taken it I asked what the tablet was . The nurse said " oh it's to treat your mums epilepsy" I was shocked and said " Mum does not have epilepsy"!!!
At that point the nurse looked shocked apologized and said she would have to ring the poisons department at the hospital. Fortunately there were no ill effects. When I questioned how this had happened it transpired that a lady with a very similar name to mum had missed out on her epilepsy medication !!! They assured me it was a one off and it had' nt happened before , but who knows!? Although mum had dementia she didn't recognize that tablet and knew she shouldn't be having it - hence the great resistance she displayed. Nana wind please keep an eye on what medication she is being given.
