Putting away Christmas- when do you do yours?

I am thinking of taking the Christmas cards down and putting away the festive ornaments today but leaving just the tree up til New Years Day. It’ll need to be down then as we’re having our ‘Imp’ from 2nd to the 5th Jan while Daddy takes Mummy away for a break!
I’ll need a lie down in a darkened room for at least a week afterwards, but won’t get one!
The decs are just annoying me now- anyone else de-Christmas before 12th night?

I like to keep them to enjoy on New Years day then pack them away on Jan 2nd. I'm always a curious mix of sad and glad when I take them down these days.

2nd January

I'm with those who put the decorations up no earlier than the weekend before Christmas and take them down on Twelfth Night. Apart from anything else, real Trees are generally dirt cheap by the week before!
Absolutely nothing to do with being Scottish, I assure you..
Nothing to see here..
Move along...

One thing I left last year was the white lights in a huge house plant - more of a tree, really. I’d planned to take them down when the clocks changed, but they were eventually left up all year.

We have birthdays on 30th and 4th of Jan I always take cards and decs down before 30th but leave tree up until 6th

Until last year, I’ve maintained the 12th night tradition.
Last year they came down a couple of days into the new year. I’m fiinding the news, the constant discussion covid depressing. I know it’s important to be aware but it’s ever present. Im not sure whether to keep the glitter and lights up to cheer or tidy up and clean as therapy ???

I usually maintain the Jan 6th deadline grin but this year will leave all but the cards up for most of January. The lights and cheer is much needed at this time of year, I wish I had left them longer for the last few years.

I didn't put much up this year for various reasons but DH is already asking when they can come down. I might leave the outside lights up until New Year though. I'm relieved it's all over, to be honest. I'm not really a Bah Humbug but this year has been awful and I will be glad to see the back of it.

Same here Calistemon, taking the 25th as the first day of Christmas means 5th Jan is day twelve but most people take theirs down 6th.
I hedge my bets and always take them down just before midnight on the 5th.

Me too now, although I used to leave it until the 6th.

12 days of Christmas…..up as near to 24th as I can…..usually 20th….then down by 6th, the epiphany…..bad luck to keep them up after that! Or so my superstitious mother said!

Our decorations go up the weekend before Christmas and come down on 12th Night.

Nonogran Wed 29-Dec-21 16:12:02

All of it, coming down today & tomorrow. Can’t wait!
They just look tawdry to me once Christmas is over.

AreWeThereYet Wed 29-Dec-21 16:04:00

Ours go up about a week before Christmas and come down on 5th or 6th January, depending on what we are doing.

Witzend Wed 29-Dec-21 15:55:30

To me it’s still Christmas until at least New Year. Ours don’t usually come down until the 6th, though it’ll be the 5th this year, because of youngest Gdc’s birthday the next day so we’ll be otherwise occupied.

I’m not one of those people who ‘can’t wait to have a good clean’. I always feel a bit sad when it all comes down - January can be so utterly dreary anyway.

I wouldn’t go so far as those people who leave decorations up until Candlemas - 2nd February, though!

Thoro Wed 29-Dec-21 15:47:05

I maybe a bit odd but I love taking down the decorations - usually the day after Boxing Day - they are already back in the loft!

LilacChaser Wed 29-Dec-21 15:42:37

Mine come down as soon as possible after New Year's Day. The living room looks very bare without them at first, admittedly.

Ailidh Wed 29-Dec-21 15:38:22

I usually do it NYD but I took it down on th 27th this year. I'm moving house on the 17th, and I'm ants about getting things packed away. Just got the Christmas tea towels to go, currently dancing on the line.

Sago Wed 29-Dec-21 15:28:15

We normally put up about a week before Xmas and take down NYD.
This year we rented a holiday home so no decorations, bed changing, cleaning to do here!
We leave tomorrow for our second home/ holiday let for NYE, there is a tree there to take down when we leave but the housekeeping company will do everything else.

This is bliss for me as I’m normally up to my eyes in laundry and cleaning until Jan 3/4.

Kalu Wed 29-Dec-21 15:03:35

Décorations were put up 22nd Dec. I don’t have a set day when they come down, possibly a couple of weeks after Hogmanay to add some cheer to a dreich January when I make an early stab at spring cleaning. If I start then, it should be finished by April!?

Forsythia Wed 29-Dec-21 15:02:30

Normally we take ours down just after or on New Years Day. This year, I didn’t put much up as we are about to move so the cards and small tree taken down yesterday.

MiniMoon Wed 29-Dec-21 14:49:59

I would gladly leave my Christmas trees up all year round!
They go up on my birthday 11th Dec., then get put away again sometime between New Year's day and 12th Night

Gongoozler Wed 29-Dec-21 14:40:00

Ours go up on Christmas Eve and come down on 12th Night.

downtoearth Wed 29-Dec-21 14:38:01

Will start tomorrow ,small flat so not overcrowded with decorations.
My birthday today so am not doing too much, resident grandaughter spoiling me.
Tomorrow back to normal

BlueSapphire Wed 29-Dec-21 14:36:11

Mine will be up till Twelfth Night, put them up about two weeks before and can't bear to take them down as it looks so bare. I just love them.

Greenfinch Wed 29-Dec-21 14:32:59

As we have grandchildren living with us we take them down the day before term starts.

Yammy Wed 29-Dec-21 14:29:01

Gradually after New Year's day and all before 12 night.
