Putting away Christmas- when do you do yours?

I am thinking of taking the Christmas cards down and putting away the festive ornaments today but leaving just the tree up til New Years Day. It’ll need to be down then as we’re having our ‘Imp’ from 2nd to the 5th Jan while Daddy takes Mummy away for a break!
I’ll need a lie down in a darkened room for at least a week afterwards, but won’t get one!
The decs are just annoying me now- anyone else de-Christmas before 12th night?

I hate taking mine down - it took me nearly a week to put them all up so they won't be coming down until 12th night. The place always looks so bare so I use battery fairy lights in flower arrangements to brighten it all up.

Usually take mine down around the 3rd Or 4th. Then a good clean up and buy a couple of new house plants and some flowers because everywhere seems so gloomy,

NotAGran55 Wed 29-Dec-21 14:17:11

Our’s didn’t go up until Christmas Eve and will go way on January 2nd.

Thankyou for all your replies. I usually get everything away by the 3rd- throwback to when all had to be away ready for back to work ( teaching) and a new school term around the 4th.

As usual, our tree didn’t go up until the 12th and the ornaments and cards were displayed during the following couple of days.

I’m wanting to take everything down now but got up feeling a bit ‘off colour’ this morning so hopefully tomorrow will be Decs down day- apart from the tree which will have gone by the 2nd!

Until last year, I’ve maintained the 12th night tradition.
Last year they came down a couple of days into the new year. I’m fiinding the news, the constant discussion covid depressing. I know it’s important to be aware but it’s ever present. Im not sure whether to keep the glitter and lights up to cheer or tidy up and clean as therapy ???

Just taken the tree and other stuff down this morning, although they only went up the week before xmas, and even then, reluctantly. Glad to see the back of it all.

Mine stay up till the 6th. January’s miserable enough without clearing Christmas away early.

But we’ve got a small second tree upstairs this year that’s pot grown. We’re planning to take that down after our little NYE do so that we can start acclimatising it to go outside.

Ours go up about 15th December and come down 2nd January.
I like them to be part of N.Y. celebrations

Grandmadinosaur Wed 29-Dec-21 13:30:49

Will do mine on the 3rd while DH is at home and around to help put them away. Then I love to have a couple of vases of flowers about the house as it looks so bare.

Nannan2 Wed 29-Dec-21 13:18:47

One of my DD's always takes down xmas decs at night on xmas day after kids go to bed, and puts up birthday decs as its my GD birthday boxing day.

Nannan2 Wed 29-Dec-21 13:16:32

Am taking down garlands on stairs as batteries nearly gone& theyre just annoying & in the way? but the rest all come down on 5th for us as its anniversary of my late mums death, so i always take them down by then. Not much up this year anyway, as i kept hoping id get a house move soon but didn't yet.?

grandtanteJE65 Wed 29-Dec-21 13:03:45

Take them down whenever you want.

Mine stay up until Twelfth Night, but then the tree doesn't ever go up before the 21st December.

I would gladly keep it up longer. January is such a dreich month.

grannysyb Wed 29-Dec-21 12:45:27

5th January, DH hates them coming down! I always put there up fairly late, this year it was the 21st.

GagaJo Wed 29-Dec-21 12:36:28

Decorations for more than 10 days are too much, IMO. Put them up late, take them down early.

EllanVannin Wed 29-Dec-21 12:34:03

Family habit---the 12th night. Mum always stuck by this, no ifs or buts.

Shropshirelass Wed 29-Dec-21 12:14:33

My DH went to the tip yesterday with some garden rubbish. There was a man there throwing away Christmas things who was in a foul mood, when an attendant commented that his tree was the first one, he commented on having a b….y awful Christmas. He was also throwing away children’s toys, most of them looked brand spanking new! Not sure what had happened there!!!

I will leave mine up until the 12th night, I like to see the tree and pretty Christmas table and decorations. I put my cards on a string so that they are not over the surfaces so not in the way. I put a few choice decorations around and a smaller tree than usual which I actually prefer. Will be glad to get back to normal though.

I’m with eazybee, we usually put ours up Christmas Eve (admit a few days earlier this year) and take them down on twelfth night. Superstitious? Moi?

I never know if they should come down o the 5th or 6th January

They should taken down on the 6th

JaneJudge Wed 29-Dec-21 12:13:18

I wanted to do it yesterday and just bring in the small tree from outside but I've been overruled and i know exactly what will happen, I will be left doing it on my own and doing all the cleaning up on my own too.

LauraNorderr Wed 29-Dec-21 12:07:46

Same here Calistemon, taking the 25th as the first day of Christmas means 5th Jan is day twelve but most people take theirs down 6th.
I hedge my bets and always take them down just before midnight on the 5th.

crazyH Wed 29-Dec-21 12:07:08

On the 2nd January…

MayBeMaw Wed 29-Dec-21 12:05:01

12th night - and hoping that coincides with the bin men.
Although as I was away there is very little extra in the way of paper etc to put out, and just my tiny tree and decs to deal with.
It will show up the dust so cue a bit of January cleaning!

3nanny6 Wed 29-Dec-21 12:02:20

12 night for me always has been. I must admit did not put too much up this year just a tree and and few lights and Christmassy ornaments it looks pretty. I got them up beginning of December and a few days later contracted Covid 19 so was quite ill. Happy to have the decs up until 6th January
even happier I came out the other side of the illness and am still here to tell the tale.

Josieann Wed 29-Dec-21 11:54:23

I have collected up the cards this morning, the trees, garlands and lights I will pack away on Jan 1st. Goodbye 2021.

Spice101 Wed 29-Dec-21 11:41:41

Took all of mine down today and packed them away for another year. Of course there are one or two that I missed but at least this year I can get to the storage boxes easily.

Kali2 Wed 29-Dec-21 11:35:05

eazybee- could have written your post! We don't put decorations until second weekend in Advent, and the tree a few days before Christmas - so 12th Day is fine.

Oh but those flashing lights everywhere - hate them (and what a massive waste of energy too).
