Radio 4 has been the back drop to my life. I've listened all my life, every radio in every room and car has been tuned to radio 4 but these days I find myself constantly switching it off. Who is it aimed at these days? My SIL, who is rather right wing no longer listens, my niece, who is well left of centre and 50, never listens, my OH doesn't tune in, my daughters don't listen and none of my friends do either. So who does, what do you enjoy and if you've stopped listening, what do you listen to now? Help I have a big hole in my life!!

Like you I have always listened to radio 4 but find myself muttering/swearing at the radio or even turning to radio 2! Classic fm has the same music list for months and gets very repetitive.

I listen in the car but recently have switched off a lot of ridiculous plays and utterly unfunny “comedies”.
I’m not a gardener so gqt gets switched off too ! I like Saturday live and woman’s hour

We don't usually listen to anything else. The clock radio is set to Radio 4 to come on for an hour at bedtime (for whatever is on that will send us to sleep) and in the morning (for the news etc).

I wouldn't want to listen to anything that is predominantly music. We do find that many of the comedy programmes currently aired by Radio 4 aren't funny and the dramas are often not to our taste.

However, we do enjoy the various quizzes at 11pm on Saturdays and the natural history/farming programmes that are on early morning at the weekends.

I don't tend to listen to radio 4 live but do listen to a lot of programs as podcasts, also listen to radio 2 and greatest hits radio. I'm 54 on Wednesday and my husband describes me as a woolly liberal!!

I stopped listening and now use to podcasts, much preferred as I only listen to what I want to.

I listen but not to all of it. You cant expect to like the entire output of one station. The comedies are awful. I listen to radio 5 sometimes and lots of podcasts.

I still listen to Radio 4! I like the news when I am driving and listen to the Archers!

I listen to r4 all day and most of the night when it turns into the world service. I habe s radio on most rooms all tuned to r4 so I can drift about without losing the drift of you get what I ? mean, big fan,

Not sure where to find pod casts don’t think there is a button on the radio, grin

Urmstongran Mon 03-Jan-22 12:50:26

R4 was my go-to station all through my 50’s.
Now, we’ll into my 60’s I never listen to it.
And don’t miss it.

I'm getting into the bbc podcasts as well. If I listen to the radio in the car it will be 4. I do agree though with the op. Its increasingly difficult to find something engaging to listen to.
Having said that I like Jack Dee on Sat. Silly but makes me laugh. I like it but not enough to remember the name of the show!grin

silverlining48 Mon 03-Jan-22 13:03:57

Ha ha thought there might be an app, there always is, I generally avoid but is that bbc sounds which you listen to on the phone?

Totally agree but I am finding many more programmes I don't like. Most of the comedy programmes are dire, I've listened to the Cabin pressure and Clare in the community series again on BBC sounds and they still make me laugh. I used to love the afternoon play and there's still some excellent ones amongst the dross, loved the Reith lectures and the follow up programmes and will listen to the Amol Rajan series on population which started this morning but the programme on Desire which came on later was utter pretentious twaddle! Perhaps I'm just turning into a grumpy old woman!

I used to listen a lot, but switched off when it was endless, endless, bloody Brexit.
Dh still listens for much of the day, but then he positively wallows in the news, however depressing.

Apart from news once a day I mostly have Classic FM on now, but do keep meaning to tune in to R4 again for various things that aren’t news - I know there’s often something well worth a listen. Must make a point of checking the listings!

I really dislike the noisy chaos of a programme called the Skewer, which is on late at night when most would want to wind down. Think it’s aiming at the ‘youff’ who probably are not listening any way,

vegansrock Mon 03-Jan-22 13:29:14

I like the Archers, The News Quiz and Dead Ringers , Desert Island Discs, occasional bits on Woman’s Hour otherwise not much else. I usually listen on Sounds rather than live. Can’t stand Any Questions or Answers or many of the so called comedies, occasional dramas, but you have to look through the ones on catch up to find good ones There are some interesting documentary podcasts on BBCSounds, I like Outlook and some True Crime ones.

Newquay Mon 03-Jan-22 13:34:23

Oh momb-we’re the same! I listen to the Archers Omnibus on Sounds too! Daft isn’t it?
As OP have said Clare in the Community is funny. I enjoy Clare Balding’s Ramblings oh and on R4E Joanna Lumley in Long Conversation too

I've never listened to Radio 4. I like Radio 2 or Smooth during the day and LBC when we go to bed. Nick Abbot is very funny.

I have always listened to radio 4 or the 'Home Service' since I was a teenager (78) now. I agree that the comedy programmes are not fit for purpose and have not enjoyed a play for many a long month, (anything with music specially composed puts me off straight away !) I keep an old laptop in the kitchen and while I'm cooking I go straight to the 'Sounds' website. I surf the schedules of both radio 4 and radio 4 extra and choose what interests me. Choices, however, are getting more restricted. [And why is it that whenever I switch on radio 4 I hear American accents?]

Chardy Mon 03-Jan-22 13:43:01

I've listened to R4 since mid-70s. I always thought once I retired I'd have it on all the time. It sends me crackers these days.
I listen to 6am News (maybe a bit of Today programme, but not often, just the sport reports). I don't even listen in the car regularly (Audible/R2 usually), just when I'm station-hopping.
30yr old daughter - Spotify
40yr old son - R1/Audible

Galaxy Mon 03-Jan-22 13:48:43

Ha foxie. I lasted about 20 seconds with the desire programme.

Maggiemaybe Mon 03-Jan-22 13:49:59

I used to listen to it a lot more than I do now. I still tune in for the Archers omnibus and Desert Island Discs on a Sunday, sometimes for Woman’s Hour and for Any Questions/Answers. And occasionally I catch a play, but more often than not I switch them off well before the end.

nadateturbe Mon 03-Jan-22 13:51:59

I still like Desert Island discs. But the day goes so quickly (maybe I've slowed down) it's impossible to listen to radio and do all the other things I want to do.
My husband listens endlessly, not just to the news, and I'm sure it's all very interesting, but I nearly have to ask for permission to speak to him.
