I've read a thread today where a poster referred to her elderly parents aged 75.
Aaaargh I'm not an elderly parent I don't feel like that, other people get old not me. Does anyone else get a shock when reading something like that smile

I was called a geriatric mother when I had my first daughter at 23, 1973, I had my last daughter at 39., I didn’t hear what they called me then. I only stopped working full time because of covid. I don’t feel old, it depends on health.

I was an even older first time mum at nearly 34! And when I went to have my IUD removed at 37 because we wanted a second child the doctor asked me why I wanted one at that age!!!

I'm now 77, but in my head I'm 24 - the age I was when I met DH........ And definitely don't feel elderly.

Aren’t pregnant women of about 37 classified as geriatric mothers to be?

JaneJudge Tue 04-Jan-22 21:59:15

I don't think 70s is elderly but my in laws are in their 80s and I think of them as elderly but only because of their 'health' situation

Grannybags Tue 04-Jan-22 21:55:55

I'm 70 this year. 69 sounds so much younger than 70!

I don't feel old until I catch sight of myself in a shop window or somewhere.

Still my granddaughter says I'm 'fit and cool' so that's ok!

Millie22 Tue 04-Jan-22 21:47:48

I was quite happy to be told that I don't 'act old' whatever that means. I'm still middle aged anyway and always will be!

M0nica Tue 04-Jan-22 21:35:49

Well DS was 50 last year and I was classified as an 'elderly prima gravida' when I had him.

I am quite happy to admit I am old, but the problem is that the word elderly has connotations of senescence and faikling fast.

Jillyjosie Tue 04-Jan-22 21:22:18

68, I usually feel around 40, sometimes 12!! It's really shocking suddenly seeing myself described as old, I really don't feel it even if I realise some days that I get more tired than before.

I was recently asked to make the tea in a class. I was the oldest by between 10 and 20 years and I felt annoyed and pigeon holed. It's a very odd feeling that I am old in years, I hate it!

If you want to feel decrepit have a look at Mumsnet. They think everyone takes to a shawl and a rocking chair at forty! ?

There are positives in a shawl and a rocking chair, sounds excellent if you want a nap.

Well I feel about 90 and not a very fit 90 at that. Unfortunately, I've got more than 20 years to go till I reach that age chronologically! I've always embraced my inner pensioner.

I like that Aveline ( the last line)?

One of our three year old grandsons said 'grandpa you are old because you have grey hair, but grandma is not old because she has dark hair'! So it's a fact, I am not old!! ha ha.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 04-Jan-22 20:08:15

I have resolved never to be elderly, let alone old. My birth certificate tells me I’m almost 71. The figures are the wrong way round even if my body begs to differ.

Aveline Tue 04-Jan-22 19:51:39

If I ever unexpectedly catch sight of myself in a shop window I always think, 'Oh there's Dad. Why's he wearing that?'

AreWeThereYet Tue 04-Jan-22 19:33:15

Recently unexpectedly caught sight of myself in a shop mirror and thought 'Poor old dear. She needs a few nights of sleep.'

I love going in the sea, Bluebelle but not until the summer.

It's too far from here anyway ?‍♀️, or at least the "proper sea" is.

BlueBelle Tue 04-Jan-22 19:26:46

Yay I was in yesterday Calistemon and the sea was 2 degrees warmer than Christmas Day but it was pretty wild waves so that was probably the reason it was warmer ?

Mollygo Tue 04-Jan-22 19:24:18

Lucca

Old/elderly is ten years older than I am, and always will be.

Love that Lucca. I’m adopting it as my motto.??

Calistemon Tue 04-Jan-22 19:22:34

BlueBelle

76 still feel a spring chicken most of the time although I m not stupid and know I m not but hey ho I m happy kidding myself
BUT I m far from geriatric ….by the way when I had my third child at 28 I was called a geriatric mother

I had my first at that age and was an elderly primigravida ?

Perhaps I need to go cold water swimming with you, Bluebelle, it might perk me up a bit.

Exactly Lucca

My daughter is 54 this year Framilode that can't possibly be right grin

HowVeryDareYou Tue 04-Jan-22 18:46:54

I'm 62 and my GP recently mentioned something about elderly people (she was reading my notes), so when I said I'm only 62, she apologised and said that 65 is the age that doctors consider a person to be elderly grin

NannyJan53 Tue 04-Jan-22 18:37:51

My 13 year old DGD said recently, “you are the youngest old person I know” I think that was a compliment? I am 68 shock

It's the connotations that go with being labelled "old" that I object to. Probably half the residents of my village are 70+ but all are active and busy, and using computers/internet/mobile phones etc. Of course, some are fitter than others - you can't help the wear and tear - but none are "sit-by-the-fire and doze old". They run most of the village activities and organisations, too, since most of the younger folk can't/won't be bothered.
