Apparently people who do a weekly shop are the likeliest to get covid

According to the papers today, people who do a weekly food-shop are in the highest category to catch covid. Me myself, I do a food shop weekly, I sanitise my hands before going in, still wipe my trolley down, face mask and no longer than 30-45 in a shop. And most of the time I still wipe my food packages down when I get home. I would consider it much safer than working in hospitality or sitting in a bar for 2 hrs or so. Or sitting on a packed train, etc. What’s other people’s thoughts on this.

Whose research shows that weekly shoppers are most at risk?

Lucca Sat 08-Jan-22 09:37:37

I think that’s just a bizarre thing to say…. More likely than people who commute on a crowded train or bus with the Uk reluctance to wear masks ? More likely than those working in schools ?

We've been doing a weekly food shop throughout and have remained Covid free. How do they know? What are they basing this on?

Aveline Sat 08-Jan-22 09:40:29

Suspect it's clickbait. Ignore.

Sorry, but FFS...

Stay indoors. Bar the door. Hold your breath taking the bins out.

We're doomed, doomed I tell you....

Sky news and daily mail online

Which papers are saying this ?

Lucca Sat 08-Jan-22 09:43:25

Oh that was quick !

bevisp1 Sat 08-Jan-22 09:43:31

Exactly, that’s what I would have thought.

bevisp1 Sat 08-Jan-22 09:44:19

Yes, me too, I’ve never had covid to date..

bevisp1 Sat 08-Jan-22 09:45:53

Ha ha yes! Seems you can’t do much these days if worry too much of catching covid

bevisp1 Sat 08-Jan-22 09:49:26

Exactly, I was worried because we had tickets to a show in London jan 2nd, worried about being on the tube trains, coffee shop, Pizza Hut for a bite to eat & a packed theatre! Did all this, glad it was on a Sunday as apart from theatre everywhere else was quiet. All facemasks in theatre, did a LFT Monday and Thursday - still negative results.

Nonsense I do a week.y shop and volunteer in a shop three days a week I wear a mask when needed and expected and I wash my hands as I normally would do
It’s a nonsense account not worth reading

BlueSky Sat 08-Jan-22 09:54:01

I’be had my shopping delivered since before the pandemic and still caught Covid despite being double jabbed and careful! confused

Millie22 Sat 08-Jan-22 10:06:32

Nonsense.

Supermarkets are spacious usually whereas trains buses and the tube get crowded quickly. You only need someone near you to breathe over you.

When this first started to hit the headlines I was doing my usual going to various shops. When it was lockdown I was reluctant to go anywhere so either did one big shop or shopped on line. I have continued with masks and sanitising etc but I go to various shops. I like the freedom of choice and there are certain products I can’t get in just one store. I think the media try to be one step ahead of competition so they cook up the head lines accordingly.

The only people I know who have acquired Covid, have attended weddings.

MerylStreep Sat 08-Jan-22 10:19:36

More codswallop ?

rosie1959 Sat 08-Jan-22 10:20:03

I read it out to my husband he was very pleased that he was safer in the pub than shopping, he doesn’t like shopping
We have most of our groceries delivered anyway and masks have taken the pleasure out of a wander round non food stores

henetha Sat 08-Jan-22 10:21:23

Statistics can be skewed to fit any scenario. This sounds ridiculous to me.

Like most things in the Mail - total rubbish

Like most things in the Mail, nothing to back up their silly claims, but makes good headlines.

I did my weekly Sainsbury shop all the way through the last couple of years. Gave me one day of actually getting out. Store was never crowded and got less and less people in it as time went on. Often I would have whole aisles totally to myself. NEVER washed packages, etc before putting away.

Having now decided to give up my car, I have started getting home deliveries, which is fine, but still do an in-store shop at least once every four weeks, by bus.

Just wish papers (will not call them 'news'papers), would stop trying to keep this fear element going. Causing so many mental health problems.

HolySox Sat 08-Jan-22 10:28:37

Most of the people who have caught COVID got it through their children/schools.

Probably find the largest group of people who catch COVID are those who watch TV.?

HolySox Sat 08-Jan-22 10:29:10

Meant to say 'People I know'

TerriBull Sat 08-Jan-22 10:32:09

Yes I read that too, but do wonder sometimes, I've been shopping probably several times a week, masked throughout, as far as I know I've never caught it and yes supermarkets are spacious and it is possible to keep a distance.

I suppose there are regional variants, but have read all manner of contradictory scare stories that appear to have no bearing on actual experiences. For example, just prior to Christmas allegedly there was shortage of turkeys and some people were queuing up for them, I had to go to my local Co-op on Christmas Eve because I'd forgotten foil, 3pm a couple of hours before closing it occurred to me browsing their shelves the whole lot was there, fresh turkeys, stuffing, all the vegetables etc. everything to make a traditional Christmas dinner, in a local convenience store that I use infrequently if I have forgotten something.
