I have looked on the list of topics for hobbies but I cannot see any so I am adding my thread on here apologies it is not meant to be here.
All my life i have done sewing off/on, using my mums sewing machine for years.
Last year during 1 of the lockdown's i had the notion to sew bits and bats for my DG's who live abroad ( age 4 and 1 ) that lead to me making endless drawstring bags ( and i mean endless)
Then Christmas was on the horizon so i changed the material of the drawstring bags to Christmassy pattern and added a bell or two.
Whoaaa my kitchen resembled a sweatshop, hahahaha, i put up with the mess because it was contributing to cure my boredom.
Today my plans are scuppered and so guess what has found its way to the kitchen table ! Yep the sewing machine. ALLLL this has lead me to think I wonder what hobbie everyone else has?
Here is a photo of 1 of the 1,00000000000000 drawstring bags i have made haha ( slight exaggeration)
I love art journaling. It started with card making then I realised that if I created something beautiful and put it in a journal then I could look at it whenever I wanted. It is so relaxing and addictive. Whether you stamp, scrap, draw, paint, it is suitable for all ages and levels of expertise. There are so many ideas and guides on YouTube.
I did lots of different things depending on my mood.... I have equipment for card making, papercrafts, quilling, gelli plate printing... and more.
Before I retired I 'collected' it all so that I could do it when I had the time.
Then I discovered jewellery making with silver clay, Argentium, gemstones, beads etc and lost interest in all of the others (if anyone would like to buy the unwanted contents of my craft room?)
Just thought of some more. Tai Chi, making teddy bears from old jumpers, my first one looks a bit ratty but that’s because I sewed in the head gusset upside down ? never mind, it adds to his charm and he is made from a very old cashmere jumper so he can pretend he’s special. I also enjoy watching the birds that visit my bird feeders, especially now I’ve got some squirrel proof ones. That reminds me that I paint nest boxes as gifts for the family. Some of my boxes have already had nesting birds which pleases me no end.
I like litter picking whilst out with my dog, poetry, x box which I discovered during lockdown, hula hooping, line dancing at home, reading, penal letters, if you notice all of my hobbies are involved with one person, im not much of a joiner in, tv, car booting, and i do like to learn new things but off the net, antiques, learning about them, doing competitions. Lots of fun.
Mummer Your model railway takes me back to when I was a child. We used to set out the model railway (took most of the floor in the room!) and make Lego houses to sit alongside. It would take all week to build it, playing trains as we went along, then DM a day to dismantle it and put it all away when she got fed up with it ?
Gosh how interesting everybody is! Fascinating.
I am a local town councillor, chair of the planning committee so find applications very interesting; I love cooking so have decided this year to try one new recipe a week; I am a member of 3 book groups; I go to walking netball ; I am a volunteer at our library; a member of the WI; go walking with the other half; help him with the allotment; begun to write poetry during the pandemic and write memories for my daughter as her heritage. Plus meet friends for lunch/ coffee etc.
We used to travel abroad extensively but not flown for almost two years as we have tried very hard to stay safe. We have decided that we must use our bus passes more frequently so intend to keep Fridays free to explore our area further, on the bus ?

Hello
It's funny you should ask, but someone on a thread here mentioned the ukulele, and I have now convinced myself I should take it up, as that is obviously where my as yet unexplored talent must lie. (Lay?)
Oh dear! Having lived next door to a lovely couple who both learnt and practiced the ukulele for several hours a day I’d suggest you check that your neighbours are hard of hearing or buy them ear plugs before you start.
Another family historian here (started over 35 years ago), also love knitting and crochet, all good hobbies to do during lockdown! Have for many years yearned to learn to play the saxophone so for Christmas was given a Nuvo Dood (Google it!), an inexpensive plastic musical instrument similar to a recorder but it has a reed, so a first step on the road to playing the sax. Haven't tried it yet - waiting for OH to leave the house for a few hours first!
There are some very clever ladies on here!
Your mare is beautiful Rosie, sorry to hear that she cannot be ridden again. I wish you were near me, I'm desperate for someone experienced to help ride my ponies.
My hobbies are riding, gardening, reading and I love nature.
I draw and paint and we both have model railway!
For all those keen to start the ukulele, take a look at the Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain on YouTube. Brilliant and so funny.
I am a cyclist
I think most people know that I am the “phantom bagpiper of Oxley’s Coppice” because I practice daily in a local bit of woodland, however my abiding, lifelong passion is family history.
Just for those interested in the ukelele, I took a free six week course at our local public library, not really to play, although that was pretty straightforward compared with the complexities of the ‘agony bags’ but for the musical theory - which I found both fascinating and really helpful in my other playing. They lent us a uke, for a returnable £5 deposit, so I would encourage anyone who has not done so to see if there is a short introductory course going on near you in a library or college, and give it a go. I know many, many people who have got huge enjoyment from being in a ukelele orchestra.
Sewing, painting, reading, gardening, up cycling old furniture, l used to knit but these days it makes my hands ache.
I move between hobbies which are currently, doing exercise first thing in a morning via Youtube. I am completing a piece of tapestry embroidery, like knitting, walking the dog, reading and gardening. However I am due to retire in April and have just received an art set as I want to take up art again - I haven't done any art sketching, or painting since I was 15. I am therefore getting going on practicing sketches currently before progressing to painting, something I have wanted to do for a long time. In addition I have made enquiries about joining a local choir as I love to sing and it is a very sociable hobby so will get me out and meeting other people. Finally, I have started to write my memoirs as before I get too old, I would like to put my life story in a book to give to family and grandchildren for memories in the future after I have gone. I think this should keep me from getting bored! My husband doesn't have any hobbies except he will walk the dog, so is happy just watching TV. Not for me so I expect to have a fulfilling and enjoyable retirement hopefully, whilst keeping the odd day to meet my sister and friends for lunches
Hi. I sew fabric baskets bunting keyring s . And am going to try macrame .I knit as well occasionally. I like creating things.
Why is it you cant correct typos ??Grrrr
Hi there
Like you I enjoy sewing however In pretty much self taught watching YouTube videos ..live made numerous Bunting,:Masks and bags and will be making A couple of Fabric crowns for My Granddaughter and her little friend for her little family Party.
I hope to maje some simple dresses for Myself this year
I do Love Ancestory but taking a break atm
Some very clever crafty people here! Unfortunately I have no artistic skills and can't sew or knit beyond the most basic
So I don't really have hobbies as such, more like activities e.g. walking, weekly dance class, book club, bridge (although haven't played for ages because of Covid but due to resume).
I make small crossbody bags from old jackets and dresses that I find in charity shops.
Those drawstring bags are absolutely lovely.
This time last year my resolution was to start a new hobby.
So I tried crochet, painting, playing the ukulele, and collecting sea-glass. Every single one failed miserably.
My fat fingers don't like crochet; my bad back hated painting due to the leaning forward; I have no ukulele talent whatsoever; and I only found one piece of sea-glass.
So I will stick to reading and knitting and pc etc....
My main hobby is riding which I took up at 50, can't help but share a pic of my lovely mare, Rose, who is sadly injured ATM and unlikely to be ridden again, fortunately I have a good friend who lends me a horse to ride. Always late to everything, I have started art classes which I'm really enjoying. Gardening, reading and pilates are regular activities. I used to be a very keen tennis player but injuries have sadly put pay to that!
Msida, lovely cushion. I must try again with crochet - and concentrate!
I've only just got round to sewing. I always felt clumsy and was scared of sewing machines since we got wacked at needlework classes at school. But a few years ago and went to a local class to learn. I'm still not good and don't sew much but I'd love to finish off the 2 Xmas quilts I started 2 years ago. They just need binding. I just want to make curtains and quilts
