Big Garden Bird Watch 2022

Too windy here, DH will do it after an early breakfast. We normally have about 10 or 12 species in the garden so let's hope they all turn up.

Lots of visitors to the feeding station this afternoon, but of course I wasn't counting then! Looking forward to tomorrow morning.

merlotgran: the birds in Norfolk have been amazing on WinterWatch so not surprised you're missing them if you've moved away.

I miss East Anglian wildlife, especially the birds. Despite setting up a feeding station in my new suburban garden all I’ve got is a lone blue tit, a couple of magpies from next door’s overgrown garden and a few passing seagulls.

I did it this afternoon. It was very windy but the scores of longtailed tits and bluetits that I saw did not seem to mind. I listened to some piano music on BBC Sounds whilst I watched. It was quite relaxing.

How lovely. We have a Little owl in the wood behind our house that we often hear at night.

I was going to do it today but it’s been incredibly windy so will try again tomorrow. For the last few mornings I’ve had a little wren turn up - he was here again this morning. I hope he turns up again tomorrow.

It’s been too windy today - the birds seem to be hiding apart from a few hardy starlings and a wood pigeon. I’ll try again tomorrow and if it’s still too windy, try Monday, the last day it can be done.
It’s the total number of a species at a given time within the hour you do your watch, ExDancer, so for example, say you saw 3 sparrows at one time within your hour, they flew off and still within that hour 4 came your garden, then you would record 4, not 7 as the number seen, otherwise it’s possible that the 3 you saw the first time were the same 3 that came back with one extra joining them, not 7 individual sparrows.

Just finished my count. Towards the end of my hour a flock of jackdaws decended, I counted 22 but there were more than that, I'm sure. I had to add pheasants and rooks to my list. After that there were the usual sparrows, chaffinches, robins, doves, tits, and blackbirds.
No wren this year, but I have seen one hopping about recently.

I should have done this today - earlier I saw a female greenfinch in the birdbath. We so rarely see greenfinches now.

Plenty of the usual suspects, though - various tits, inc. long tailed, robin and a GS woodpecker.

You count the biggest number of one species at one time. So if you see 2 Robins at once you record 2. You dont count each time you see a Robin.

I've often wondered about doing this.
How do you know you're not counting the same bird several times?

We are doing it tomorrow. It's crazy windy at the moment.

Now and again I've heard one near here but we're inundated with finches who've taken over the sparrow population that we once had.
Pipistrelle bats are what we seem to have this last few years. Dusk is the time for them, low-flying

We're doing ours tomorrow when it's less windy. We've hardly seen a bird today, so hope tomorrow is better.

We don't get as many birds since next doors "handyman" cut everything back to ground level and devastated all the birds nesting places last summer.

I shall do it tomorrow but I'm having a lot of problems with pigeons atm as they seem to watch for me putting any bird food out ?

My 2 youngest granddaughters and I did ours this morning. They took turns in using the binoculars and marking the sheet. I kept a watch on proceedings as the youngest wanted to include birds flying overhead. The eldest one who is owl mad is always hopeful for one to put in an appearance but it was not to be. A very pleasant way to pass an hour.

I was a member of the Ornithology society for years and doing records of different species. I also do the RSPB bird watch I adore bird watching they never cease to amaze me.

I did it yesterday, very disappointing as I was inundated with feral pigeons and not a lot else so annoying as I usually get robins, blackbirds, doves etc but the pigeons are such bullies.
