My young Grandson works as a painter and decorator with his brother, this morning stripping a clients wallpaper he discovered someone had painted initials on the plaster underneath J B which are his own initials. He was a bit spooked.
I've had instances of meeting friends whilst miles away from home. What coincidence have you experienced?

My brother was on holiday in Spain and at his hotel one day offered to carry a woman’s case up the steps. He looked down and saw that it was my suitcase (left some airline stickers on it). The woman was my daughter’s mil who had borrowed the case from me.

I was having a drink in my local. The bar maid was having her 21st birthday. She was born on the exact date that my mother died.

A friend who was a midwife suddenly realised on talking to her son's fiance, that 24 years previously she had actually delivered the young woman. Sadly, the wedding never took place, as shortly after this conversation the girl was killed and my friend's son seriously injured in a car crash. So my friend was there at the birth and the death.

My dad used to give random hitchhikers a lift as he travelled a lot, one day he picked up a young lad on the outskirts of London he said he was going to the Midlands same as my dad. On nearing the Midlands he asked more specifically where he was going the lad said Stafford same as my Dad it turned out the young lad was his new nextdoor but one neighbours son.

Another in another coincidence I worked with a lady who was born in the same maternity home as I was, then moved to the same town as I did 20 miles away, where we both gave birth to our three children in the same hospital then we both moved 300 miles away and now live 2 miles apart. We met when the lady became my daughters teacher and I got a job at the same school.
Also another teacher working at the same school grew up in my home town and went to the same school as I did. Non of us knew each other when we lived in our home town 300 miles away.

Don't know if you would call it a coincidence but you certainly couldn't plan it - my Son's birthdays are 9/1, 10/2, 11/3 and they were all born on Thurdays ?

We were on a weekend break in New York and coming out of one of the many entrances of Central Park, someone called my name. I ignored it as nobody knew we were going. When she called it again, I looked round and saw it was a supervisor from work who I didn't know was going. To say we were both surprised is an understatement.

Few years ago I ordered my turkey from different butcher then forgot I had done so. Scoot forward to turkey collection, I went to butchers, gave my name and collected my turkey, was surprised I didn't remember I'd already paid for it, but happily went home and thought nowt of it. 2days later christmas eve, got call from a butcher in town , was I collecting my turkey today as he's closing early............yikes!! To say a penny dropped was an understatement! I'd collected another's turkey from my usual butcher!! Same name same first name, same postcode which is literally for 50 homes only!!!!scoot forward to next shopping day , I crept into butcher #1 and yep! I'd collected another lady's bird! Luckily he did have spares in case an eejit like me was about....I still don't know who the 'other woman' is though!

My son was very badly injured in a RTA aged 16 and in a coma for 10 days. He recovered but never quite back to normal. We worried about him never meeting someone and getting married as we wouldn't always be there for him. My MiL said not to worry, God would have someone for him. A couple of years later we moved house. He became friendly with a girl who lived next door and they eventually married. Her birthday is the same date as his accident.

Years ago, in the 1980s, my mum and dad drove about 60 miles from their tiny village in Staffordshire to meet me and my children in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire for a day out. Whilst shopping we met a spinster neighbour of my parents who had also driven the 60 miles with her married “boyfriend” from the same village. Mum and Dad (and others) had suspected the affair for some while, so their suspicions were confirmed!! What a coincidence we had all met so far away from home.

I went to work for an International photographic company after a lost pregnancy ,something different the doctor said to give me a new focus.
The company sent me 400 miles away to train on new technology with the man who would be my assistant manager. On our first evening we chatted about where we came from and he told me the area of Glasgow where he was raised .I said my dad lived there what was your families name .I was told it was a fairly common Irish surname and he said his GF was .AD . i said THATS my dads name ,.His GF was my dads uncle and they had lost touch 20 years earlier when we all moved houses at the same time.We called my dad and his mum and they met up before we got back from our course .We stay in touch now 35 years on ..

In September 1974 I was driving on the M6. Suddenly a car, driven by a man pulled alongside my car. This vehicle remained alongside for ten miles. Then suddenly he speeded up and was gone. It was a very unnerving experience. I carried on to my destination. I spent the day with my oldest friend, whose mother was dying.
On the return journey, in the same area as the outward journey, suddenly there was the same car, same driver. He drove alongside me again, for ten miles, then sped off. The strangest experience. Was it a coincidence? I'll never know, but it was most unpleasant.

Here’s another Australian story.

In the 1950/60s people often hitchhiked and my dad, a very friendly fellow, would always stop and give the hitch hiker a lift. One day 2 young men were thumbing a lift and dad picked them up. They were touring England and were Aussies. They chatted about their lives in Australia and then dad told them about how much he liked to follow Australian art and described one of his favourite paintings. At that one of the young men said ‘my dad painted that picture’.

They were all surprised and happy at the co-incidence.

I've loved reading all your stories, so many extraordinary tales makes you wonder what the heck ?

giulia Wed 09-Feb-22 20:18:22

Strange how many of these stories involve Australia! Mine does too: on a coach trip to Scotland, we had to make an unscheduled loo stop in a small village near the Scottish border. There was an Australian lady in our group. In the shop she got chatting to the girl behind the counter. They discovered that this girl was to get married the next week and then emigrate - not only to the same city as our Australian travel companian - but to live in the same road!

I took my grandson to a playtime at a church near his home and got talking to one of the helpers. We talked about churches and I said about one I had attended for many years and it turned out she was the daughter of the vicar who christened all my children 40 years previously.

The man I married used to live opposite me with his first wife. I was just a teenager, I never knew him but always admired his car which he would often park in front of our house!! We met in a club years after he had divorced and moved elsewhere.

My first husband turned out to have the same birthday - day, month AND year - as my husband's first wife!!

Today we had a cover teacher in my class who had never been to this school before. She had a distinctive surname the same as a lad from my youth 45 years ago.
He and his friend went out with my friend and I.
Jokingly I asked do you know a XX. A few questions later it turns out to be her husbands brother!

I once called in sick at work so I could go on a day trip to London, I was walking down the train when a voice said "hello" - it was my boss

On a self drive tour of New England about 25 years ago, DH and I visited the Holocaust Memorial in Boston. On turning round I met an acquaintance who I knew from a weekly badminton class.

A number of years ago we were in Florida together with my brother and his family. In the taxi on the way back to the airport the driver asked if we minded if his son came along as he too needed to go to the airport. We had no objection as there was plenty of room. We started chatting with the son only to find out he had spent the previous year in the next village to us, where my sister in-laws parents also lived.
