Shock, spider in my bedroom this evening!

I was not expecting to see a big hairy spider above my bed this evening! I was sat on it putting on my creams and potions and happened to look up, there is was, just above the headboard! I got out my trusty spider catcher only to find it was not working, luckily I had a spare battery so I opened up the casing. However, the old battery and pins were a bit corroded and when I pulled off the old battery, one of the metal bits was stuck on a pin. I went into a bit of a panic mode as I really did not want to get a load of tissues to grab the spider and risk it running away under my bed! Luckily, I managed to prise it off with sone nail scissors and clean up the pins - working perfectly now.

A quick suck and the spider was trapped then duly dispatched down the toilet - sorry but it was not invited in my house so had to go! I must now remember to buy a new battery as it was the last square one in my stash.

I don’t recall seeing spiders in the house in February previously, now I’ll have to do a spider hunt every night!

I once had a huntsman run across my face at night. Awful experience. I switched the light on and when I saw it I screamed. It was a huge one, about 2 or 3 inches across. Are they getting bigger with changing climates?

Kim please don’t call me ‘unkind’!
I’m not the one who put an animal down the bloody loo!
This is a hill that I’m prepared to die on! ?

I’m terrified of them, always have been, I had a massive one scuttling across the carpet on Saturday night, I thought it unusual in February but maybe this damp weather has brought them out of their hidey holes!! My DH used to pick them up in his hand & put them outside, I’m sure they waited till his back was turned & then sneaked back in!! I’m afraid I’m not that brave, I really must get a spider catcher.

I also wondered is all the rain had made them scuttle indoors!

My spider catcher is one of the best things I have ever bought - also my need to keep spares of most sizes of batteries,

Teacheranne, lots of harsh comments and halo polishing here. You did what made you feel safe and comfy and that's important in your own home. Hope you don't encounter any more. (spiders or unkind\ judgemental comments)

Aldom

Very shocked that you put a spider down the toilet. Why couldn't you just have let it go outside.

Me too.
It’s made me feel quite sad.
I’m not scared of spiders at all, but used to be ridiculously frightened by daddy long legs.
I can’t imagine willfully killing anything.
If I accidentally drown a little insect in the bath I’m gutted.

I couldn’t kill a spider same as I couldn’t kill anything on my veg patch I just pick them up and place elsewhere.

Teacheranne, I do understand your fear , I would not be too keen to see a large one in my bedroom either. However my Mum taught me to never kill a spider , she used to say “ put him outside and ask him not to come back”. So that is what I do - not convinced he listens though! If the spider is on the floor I pop a glass over it then slide a thin piece of card under the glass , carry it outside and release it into the garden . If the spider is on the ceiling the glass procedure is not so easy, so a duster helps , a precarious procedure though ! so will be on the look out for a spider catcher. Not happy about spiders in my house but feel Mum is ‘ watching’ me so the spiders live to fight another day!

I've got a spider catcher, no batteries, just slide open the flap, place over spider, wait until it runs into the small compartment then slide the flap across. It does have a long handle.
Put it outside on a nice plant.
Works for bees too.

Never a truer word!

SueDonim Mon 14-Feb-22 23:21:24

Nope. Not having a Devil’s horseman invading my sanctuary. They’re vile.

MaizieD Mon 14-Feb-22 23:19:24

I'm happy to go with it being a phobia. Neither I nor Mr Maizie are in the least bit bothered by spiders but my DD was terrified of them from a very early age. I just trap them in a glass and put them outside.

I'm sorry you killed it though.

Kate1949 Mon 14-Feb-22 23:18:56

It's just a little creature going about its business, trying to stay alive like the rest of us. I'm channelling David Attenborough.

SueDonim Mon 14-Feb-22 23:13:50

That’s unwelcome news, TeacherAnne. I’m phobic about spiders and will be checking my bedroom now. I was hoping to be safe until August. sad

Granmarderby10 Mon 14-Feb-22 23:12:24

Just for the record? I haven’t “passed it on” to my children and, as far as I can remember my parents didn’t pass it on to me.
That’s called self control
Because phobias are a tyranny

Zoejory I am not wrong, there are definitely fewer in my home
They are all most acceptable in the outdoors.
And I don’t kill them either, I am much too petrified of the big ones.
As someone has probably already said on here; just the word or a photograph or image is a trigger.
And I’ll repeat ( for the benefit of those who don’t get it) or those offended by block capital letters of the alphabet, in gentle italics: it’s a phobia

seacliff Mon 14-Feb-22 22:50:31

I too am really scared of them, don't even want to look at a photo of one, mainly the big ones with hairy legs. Irrational yes. I don't kill them, OH catches them and puts them outside. The only thing I kill is horseflies if I can, usually after they've given me a painful bit.
I would just leave the room if alone with a spider. We get a lot at harvest time, so have fly screens on most windows, which helps a bit.

Jane43 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:48:32

I used to be scared of bats and spiders but when my older son was a baby he was sitting on the floor playing with his bricks and I saw a huge spider crawling towards him. DH was at work so I put my fear to one side, grabbed a duster, picked the spider up in the duster and shook it out of the window. I was never scared of them after that but I still hate bats.

MissAdventure Mon 14-Feb-22 22:40:48

I'm terrified of them.
I'm scared of tomato stalks, for some reason; they are very spidery, and even if I've just pulled them off a tomato, I sometimes can't touch them.

Sara1954 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:37:49

Casdon
I am a mess in autumn, I can’t even say the word, I’m a bag of nerves all the time, and it’s not learned behaviour, because my mother would happily scoop them up and put them outside, sadly my own children are pretty bad, but not as bad as me.

So, hearing about one in February, is very worrying for me.

Kate1949 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:37:31

I could never kill a spider. Trap it and put it outside.

MissAdventure Mon 14-Feb-22 22:30:58

I'm sure I read somewhere that some people are genetically wired to fear spiders.

Casdon Mon 14-Feb-22 22:29:23

I sympathise Teacheranne. I can’t even look at a picture of them, or write the word. People don’t get it, it’s a phobia. It’s not learned behaviour in my case, I don’t know anybody else who has it. Yes, it’s irrational, but most people are phobic about something, and it’s not kind to be dismissive.
Zoejory it’s the unpredictability, the legs, the way you can feel the legs if they walk on you, the hair, the eyes - it’s everything. I can feel the panic just thinking about it. And just to say, I’m a calm and rational person otherwise, not a fruitcake.

Zoejory Mon 14-Feb-22 22:22:41

You've not offended me, Teacheranne, I just think it's a shame.
