Shock, spider in my bedroom this evening!

I was not expecting to see a big hairy spider above my bed this evening! I was sat on it putting on my creams and potions and happened to look up, there is was, just above the headboard! I got out my trusty spider catcher only to find it was not working, luckily I had a spare battery so I opened up the casing. However, the old battery and pins were a bit corroded and when I pulled off the old battery, one of the metal bits was stuck on a pin. I went into a bit of a panic mode as I really did not want to get a load of tissues to grab the spider and risk it running away under my bed! Luckily, I managed to prise it off with sone nail scissors and clean up the pins - working perfectly now.

A quick suck and the spider was trapped then duly dispatched down the toilet - sorry but it was not invited in my house so had to go! I must now remember to buy a new battery as it was the last square one in my stash.

I don’t recall seeing spiders in the house in February previously, now I’ll have to do a spider hunt every night!

I'm off to Google spider catchers! Never heard of mechanical ones.

Grandma70s Mon 14-Feb-22 21:58:45

There is no good reason to kill spiders in this country.

Teacheranne Mon 14-Feb-22 22:00:11

Mine was from Lakeland, it is battery operated and sucks up the spider into a tube. It’s powerful enough to get big ones and I leave the suction on until the spider is at the bottom of the tube before I put the cap on. I think some cheaper ones are not as powerful and have narrower tubes as some folks on here have said that theirs will not suck up the big ones!!

Just don't get this fear of spiders in the UK or Europe. They do such a great job.

Jaxjacky Mon 14-Feb-22 22:00:43

I’m ok with Spiders, pick it up and out the window, MrJ not so good, but he sorts slugs for me (not on the bedroom ceiling).

Now I’m fine with removing slugs but not spiders! I don’t like the way they move!

Teacheranne why did you kill it? You could have just put it outside. It had a right to live just like you.

nanaK54 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:04:02

Oh, why didn't you just put it outside?

Teacheranne Mon 14-Feb-22 22:06:23

nanaK54

Oh, why didn't you just put it outside?

Because I’ve seen a documentary which tracked spiders after that were put outside and they went straight back inside!

I’m not exactly phobic about them but would struggle to get to sleep if I knew there was one in my bedroom.

Blossoming Mon 14-Feb-22 22:08:14

They can climb out of lavatories.

Zoejory Mon 14-Feb-22 22:10:30

Oh when will people stop killing spiders! What is it they're frightened of?

We have a spider ladders in our baths to allow them to escape.

I'm pleased that all 5 of my children and 7 grandchildren aren't scared of spiders. It is learned behaviour, I guess. But all houses will have plenty of spiders in which we very rarely get to see. We need to leave them alone. Be grateful to them as this article points out

Teacheranne yes that is one of the blessings of winters; few creepy crawlies.

I’ll explain about the fear of spiders.
Ready?
Here goes
IT’S A PHOBIA
by it’s very definition it is irrational.
And extremely common. Even primeval according to some scientists.

Teacheranne Mon 14-Feb-22 22:21:30

Blossoming

They can climb out of lavatories.

Not if you put some toilet paper on top!

Apologies to those who I have offended, maybe it is a full blown phobia and irrational as I don’t kill the slugs that sometimes come in my kitchen or the flys and wasps.

Zoejory Mon 14-Feb-22 22:21:31

Teacheranne yes that is one of the blessings of winters; few creepy crawlies.

No need to shout the word PHOBIA, it doesn't lend anything to the discussion.

Also you're incorrect to suggest there are less insects in winter

Zoejory Mon 14-Feb-22 22:22:41

You've not offended me, Teacheranne, I just think it's a shame.

Casdon Mon 14-Feb-22 22:29:23

I sympathise Teacheranne. I can’t even look at a picture of them, or write the word. People don’t get it, it’s a phobia. It’s not learned behaviour in my case, I don’t know anybody else who has it. Yes, it’s irrational, but most people are phobic about something, and it’s not kind to be dismissive.
Zoejory it’s the unpredictability, the legs, the way you can feel the legs if they walk on you, the hair, the eyes - it’s everything. I can feel the panic just thinking about it. And just to say, I’m a calm and rational person otherwise, not a fruitcake.

MissAdventure Mon 14-Feb-22 22:30:58

I'm sure I read somewhere that some people are genetically wired to fear spiders.

Kate1949 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:37:31

I could never kill a spider. Trap it and put it outside.

Sara1954 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:37:49

Casdon
I am a mess in autumn, I can’t even say the word, I’m a bag of nerves all the time, and it’s not learned behaviour, because my mother would happily scoop them up and put them outside, sadly my own children are pretty bad, but not as bad as me.

So, hearing about one in February, is very worrying for me.

MissAdventure Mon 14-Feb-22 22:40:48

I'm terrified of them.
I'm scared of tomato stalks, for some reason; they are very spidery, and even if I've just pulled them off a tomato, I sometimes can't touch them.

Jane43 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:48:32

I used to be scared of bats and spiders but when my older son was a baby he was sitting on the floor playing with his bricks and I saw a huge spider crawling towards him. DH was at work so I put my fear to one side, grabbed a duster, picked the spider up in the duster and shook it out of the window. I was never scared of them after that but I still hate bats.

seacliff Mon 14-Feb-22 22:50:31

I too am really scared of them, don't even want to look at a photo of one, mainly the big ones with hairy legs. Irrational yes. I don't kill them, OH catches them and puts them outside. The only thing I kill is horseflies if I can, usually after they've given me a painful bit.
I would just leave the room if alone with a spider. We get a lot at harvest time, so have fly screens on most windows, which helps a bit.

Granmarderby10 Mon 14-Feb-22 22:57:50

Zoejory I am not wrong, there are definitely fewer in my home
They are all most acceptable in the outdoors.
And I don’t kill them either, I am much too petrified of the big ones.
As someone has probably already said on here; just the word or a photograph or image is a trigger.
And I’ll repeat ( for the benefit of those who don’t get it) or those offended by block capital letters of the alphabet, in gentle italics: it’s a phobia

SachaMac Mon 14-Feb-22 23:08:49

I’m terrified of them, always have been, I had a massive one scuttling across the carpet on Saturday night, I thought it unusual in February but maybe this damp weather has brought them out of their hidey holes!! My DH used to pick them up in his hand & put them outside, I’m sure they waited till his back was turned & then sneaked back in!! I’m afraid I’m not that brave, I really must get a spider catcher.
