I am looking for some warm comfortable big knickers. No stretch, no lace and soft to the touch. That made me think of Pollards. I loved that store.

So many bargains in the big drums and the array of items in the drawers behinds the counter staff was huge.

We had a wonderful shop very similar to Pollards, but now that too has gone.

In Dorchester, Dorset Woolworth were taken over by the staff. It sells similar stuff and is called Wellworth.
I miss Alexon ladies clothes. Boswells of Oxford, an independent department store. If it couldn't be found anywhere else, Boswells had it. They closed not so long ago. Much missed.

Woolies was taken over in our town by Poundstretcher which seems to be just as good and sells the same sort of things.

Just Woolies

Copeland and Lye Granniesunite? I always thought it looked more friendly than Pettigrew's for some reason. My mother would go up in the lift in both shops, but would always walk downstairs again because she hated the feeling of going down in a lift. I remember being taken to both shops every spring to choose material for my summer dresses, which my mother would make.

Woolworths. They used to sell tinned shampoo when I was a teenager and always brought my 45s at the record counter. They also tested lightbulbs before you brought them. I was a saturday girl at one and sold the orange squash there with the plastic oranges floating about in the machine.

Yes going to the loo in Jenners needed planning in advance!

grumppa Wed 16-Feb-22 17:46:17

Gamages
Houndsditch Warehouse
Bonds of Chelmsford

Marydoll Wed 16-Feb-22 17:37:57

I did like Jenners. However, i was always getting lost, it was a warren and I have absolutely no sense of direction.
A few years ago, I left DD to go to the loo, I couldn't find my way back!

Claretjan Wed 16-Feb-22 17:34:14

Jenners in Edinburgh. I miss all the department stores that have vanished.

BBbevan Wed 16-Feb-22 17:31:54

Your wallpaper looks interesting Fanny.

There was a department store in St Albans called Greens. Loved having a mooch around there.

SachaMac Wed 16-Feb-22 17:10:12

Lovely owl FannyCornforth My mum & my Aunty were both gilders at Crown Derby.
Kittylester I remember the old trolley buses running through town. Also, you mention Green Lane, there was a brilliant joke shop on there near Aileen Penns. We used to enjoy spending our pocket money in the joke shop & also going with our grandma to choose a new winter coat from AP’s. Happy days indeed.

I thought Country Casuals disappeared years ago.

Casdon Wed 16-Feb-22 16:58:38

Are you sure Gap is still there Patsy70, I thought they closed all their UK stores at the end of 2021?

Millie22 Wed 16-Feb-22 16:56:15

Chelsea Girl ...loved that shop!
The Pier for homeware and bits and bobs
Adams for children's clothes. I got so much from there and now there are no children's clothes shop
Mango

Patsy70 Wed 16-Feb-22 16:55:13

We still have Country Casuals, Monsoon and Gap in our nearest large town. I miss BHS for their homeware department, especially lighting and bedding.

I worked in the Personnel Dept of Bourne & Hollingsworth in the Sixties. It's hard to believe now, but in those days all the big stores in Oxford Street closed at 1.00 p.m. on a Saturday and there was a late night on a Thursday when the stores opened until 8.00 p.m.
The store I miss the most is David Evans in Swansea, it finally became a House of Frazer store but closed about 15 years ago.
Sadly there is no longer a Monsoon store in South Wales, the nearest one now is in the Cabot centre in Bristol.
So many shops that have gone and nothing that's replaced them. It makes me feel quite sad.

Woolworths and C&A.

Oh, and John Menzies.
Back in the early seventies, when I was approaching my teens, they sold quite a few things that I liked!
We have a pocket calculator bought there back in 1979, which is still going strong and used almost every day!
That must be some kind of a record grin

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 16-Feb-22 16:38:03

Oh, he’s beautiful Fanny. I covet him! Thanks for derailing!

FannyCornforth Wed 16-Feb-22 16:30:33

Can I clarify -I’m not just sending random posters random photos! smile

FannyCornforth Wed 16-Feb-22 16:29:08

I really, really apologise for the derailment;
but I want to show Annsixty my Royal Crown Derby owl.
Unfortunately you can’t pm photos, and this seems as good a thread as any.
Thank you!

I bet it was a nice place to work Grandmadinosaur it was a great shop & a lovely old building, it’s a shame it was knocked down. My mum used to do a lot of sewing & she used to take us upstairs with her to browse the beautiful fabrics. Nowhere like that in town now sadly.

Grandmadinosaur Wed 16-Feb-22 16:18:52

My Auntie worked at Midland Drapery SachaMac it was a lovely shop. As a child I remember being taken there to see Father Christmas. Happy memories.

Another vote for C & A. I always had my sister’s hand me downs but when I was 14 we were the same size, so my first new coat came from C&A, then a skirt for a party, a summer dress, and later an interview suit. Oh and my first pair of trousers. My father would not let us girls wear trousers, but the churches organised a youth ramble for hundreds of young people, and we convinced him we would not be decent climbing stiles in skirts with so many boys around.
