I also remember Blacklers in Liverpool - Elliot Street. I think it’s a Wetherspoons now. I well remember going to Santa’s grotto as a child, and there used to be coloured dancing fountains at Christmas. Ah - happy days !!

I also miss George Henry Lees in Liverpool, the yearly treks there for school uniforms always included treats in the cafe and diversions into the toy department.
As a young child I was enthralled by the sights and smells in the huge Coopers , also the 6 floors that was Lewis’s , what a day out that was !

I remember Coopers, and I also loved Lewis’s - you could make a day of it. I also remember the Kardomah coffee emporium in Bold Street - much missed. I remember the gorgeous waft of fresh ground coffee as you walked past. I haven’t lived in Liverpool since 2004 (long story) and still miss it - you know what they say, you can take the girl out of Liverpool……………………!!

Dickins & Jones in Regent Street, I had a friend whose mother worked there and she would use her staff discount for us.
BHS as one could sometimes find something a bit different there.

I miss BHS. I got the best-fitting pair of jeans from there. They were also great for lamps and light fittings.

oh, so many stores I wished still were here!
Woolworths for a start always what you wanted in there and also great for a wander around to pass the time!
Co-op there was a big one by us that sold clothes and they were really good value, fitted well and excellent price.
Littlewoods though the clothes were good they also sold brilliant knitting patterns and yarn. Our local one had a good cafe too, they used to have a sort of cake with raspberries in it as well that was heavenly but I have never found it anywhere else! okay, the rest of the food was a bit greasy spoon kept hot stuff but was cheap and when I lived in a hostel nearby was a lifesaver. The allowance the Social gave me for food daily was so small most places were out of the question and there was no where to cook so their cafe was a life saver!

C&A I used to buy clothes for my son and I would love to buy for my grandchildren They were well made and reasonably priced

Definitely Woolworths without a doubt.

I too remember Chadds in Hereford and agree that it was a lovely place to shop . Completely agree that Hereford has been ruined by the new shops and cinema complex . It’s such an anachronism , sadly one that many other Councils adopt , to the eventual detriment of the places they say that will be ‘improved’

I used to work in Woolworths as a Saturday girl. Do miss it.

It would have to be C&A …… I did have the privilege of opening the Hemel Hempstead store many years ago. The whole experience from being taken to the Oxford Street store and being kitted out, lunches, the vintage Rolls Royce and the huge amount of vouchers, absolutely superb.

Fenwicks

Has your Fenwick closed. There is a lovely Fenwick in Colchester. It’s light and spacious and sells masses of beautiful things. I love going there.

And Gamages for toys, although I found it boyish ... trains and planes etc. I think it was in Holborn.

Oh Gamages. I’d forgotten it. I used to have to go there for my school uniform.

Loved Woolworths. Ladybird clothes for kids was brilliant. It’s now a Poundland, which just doesn’t do the same job.

Monsoon is still in parts of the UK, but not everywhere. 35 stores closed in 2020 when they went into administration, and more disappeared in 2021, including all 3 of the branches in my area.

There are some carluccios around still we travel to them often x

What I really miss is being able to go into a department store to look for, say, a coat and all the coats used to be together so you could just try on a whole rail of coats. Nowadays they are all separated into different makes and you have to search them out. I find it really annoying.

I confess I haven't read all the posts so someone else may have mentioned Bolingbroke and Wenley in Chelmsford. My 3 piece suite bought there almost 25 years ago refuses to wear out!
