If you can’t take the stick . . .

I read this morning of the resignation of a further 8 town councillors in Norfolk because of “incessant” bullying, orchestrated by Doug Lawson. Those resigning accused some councillors of misogynistic, racist, homophobic and generally bigoted discriminatory behaviour towards councillors and members of the general public.
Mr Lawson is quoted as saying, “The legislation expects politicians and people in the public sector to take a lot more stick as part of the job. If you can’t take it you shouldn’t have joined.”
So does that mean Doug Lawson condones bullying from within an institution as part of the job?
Is he right?

May I say again, we don’t know all the facts.

You’re right, GSM, we don’t know all the facts, but we never do about anything that we comment on on GN. If a school has a high turnover of staff, questions are asked. There seems to have been a large number of resignations in this article. I wonder why?

I find it interesting that those who resigned quoted discriminatory behaviour towards “the general public” when the protests in Council Meetings, on Facebook and, regrettably face to face in the street, have been by members of the public to the resigning group.

There seem to be a large number of people in Downham Market who feel that the resigning group have been riding roughshod over local residents and have reported to the Police people who came to a Council Meeting to voice their protests.

Might he actually be the voice of the people?

You are so right Laura. If we don't stand up to bullies that IS all that left.

In this area a “Town Council” is equal to a parish council, they elect a Mayor for official functions, it has very few powers, it’s main function is reviewing planning applications, along with street lights, cemetery etc.
Bitching is par for the course, one strong individual can cause a lot of trouble, especially if he/she is exposing dodgy dealing that have been going on for years

I'm a sitting Conservative councillor in Scotland. That will mean a lot more if you know the political situation.

Those councillors must have been going through something really hard to r sign.
I get a lot of abuse. I have been spat at, shouted at, told they are going to set their dog on me, doors slammed in face and also had my tyres slashed. Those were from members of the public. Within my political group I was bullied by my group leader to the point of resignation. However, I didn't resign and stood up to the bully - it was hard, I cried a lot, got support from a fellow councillor, and survived it. I am now standing again in May.
Up to that point I will now have all my social media checked by the SNP, and anything even slightly wrong will be passed to a newspaper. I will have doors slammed in my face and be threatened more than once in the run up. But none of that will put me off!
