If Christmas starts in November when can you eat a hot cross bun?

I've just bought my first Hot cross buns this year. My grandmother always insisted they shouldn't be eaten until Easter Sunday. My mother was the same when I was little but she softened as she got older. But it just occurred to me that if things keep going on as they are we will be eating hot cross buns and easter eggs just after Christmas. Not that I think that's bad- but when is the earliest you would have one?

You can eat them any time you like. Made in my kitchen sometimes with crosses sometimes not. Delicious straight from the oven and cooled a little.

I seem to eat them most of the year, I love them. I found some delicious vegan ones in M&S last week (though wouldn’t most sorts be vegan anyway?)

I still have one in my freezer. I froze four and eat one when I feel like a treat. I will try and hold off buying any more until Holy Week.

Personally, I like to eat fruit and veg in season. And same goes for other foods for special festivals. So hot cross buns are for Easter only- that makes them feel special and so much more enjoyable, Same for mince pies over Christmas, etc.

Saw some lovely ones in M&S today - will probably buy them next time. Easter eggs been in shops since 27th December. I do buy them early but not that early.

Ooooh blueberry, they sound nice, I must look out for them.
I only started eating hot cross buns after I left home. My mother didn’t like them, so that was that, nobody in our house got them!

My son came home with a pack of four spiced apple and four blueberry hot cross buns from M&S.

Oooh V3ra those are faves...

I really fancy one now sad

Interesting to see that when several of you were children you always had them on Good Friday as I did too. It always seemed slightly odd to me that my parents who always gave up something enjoyably edible for Lent would happily have Hot Cross buns. I certainly didn’t know about bakers opening specially to sell them. June. smile

My Mum told me once that was why she never had sugar in tea. She’d given it up for Lent years before and never wanted it again.

Oh, I used to be a stickler about only eating them from Good Friday, but I’ve succumbed. We finished our first pack this morning and I’ve just ordered some more in my grocery shop. Again I used to be a purist about only eating the traditional ones. They’re still my favourite, but some spiced apple seem to have fallen into my trolley….

We’ve just fed our last two to the birds, they got forgotten about on a top shelf sadly.
They were Aldi bramley apple ones I think.

I’ve already eaten hot cross buns, but I haven’t eaten any Easter eggs yet. My favourite hot cross buns are the luxury ones in M+S. I browsed the Easter eggs in Waitrose this afternoon but didn’t buy any - yet! We usually roast a leg of lamb for Easter Sunday lunch, it’s the only time we eat lamb.

I buy them all year round and freeze them. Only the plain ones though. I have one toasted most days. It usually the only bread type product I have all day.

Mollygo Thu 17-Feb-22 17:39:28

Whenever you can get them. My favourites, apart from the originals are ginger and chocolate buns. Sadly you shouldn’t put them in the toaster!

My son came home with a pack of four spiced apple and four blueberry hot cross buns from M&S. So it would have been rude not to eat them ?
I'm going to miss him and his treats when his house purchase finally completes and he moves out soon ?

Tea cakes, hot cross buns in the Aga for a few minutes with lashings of butter, yum. Picked up a packet of 6 hot cross buns in Sainsbury’s yesterday and put them back again. They looked delicious.
Had them only on Good Friday growing up so for now I’m only going to look at them.

I like to be seasonal with food, so I ignored the hot cross buns on sale in the village bakery. Bought tea cakes instead. Delicious. Last year as in lockdown, baked my own hot cross buns. Worth waiting for.

Sarahmob Thu 17-Feb-22 16:42:46

I’d eat them anytime - it’s a similar treat to a tea cake - lovely

love0c Thu 17-Feb-22 16:42:32

Just bought some this afternoon, so after dinner tonight. Really looking forward to one! Probably give it 10 secs in the m/w. I do like them warm smile

Kim19 Thu 17-Feb-22 16:37:20

I buy them any time I fancy. Lovely!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 17-Feb-22 16:23:10

Just bought two packs of luxury hot cross buns in M & S, not sure if they will make it into the freezer…

Pittcity Thu 17-Feb-22 16:07:05

Whenever you like. I don't think any food is really seasonal any more.
I don't agree with messing with the flavours though.

Calendargirl Thu 17-Feb-22 15:30:04

I bought a pack of chocolate ones, reduced in price, only the other day.

Put them straight in the freezer to bring out when we fancy a treat.

shysal Thu 17-Feb-22 15:27:07

I didn't like the M&S cheese and Marmite ones that I tried a few years ago, but enjoyed the Asda Red Leicester and tomato this year. I don't think of them as for Easter only, I will eat them any time. I am on 800 calories a day at the moment, but the four in my freezer have been calling to me!

Beswitched Thu 17-Feb-22 15:26:03

We always had them on Good Friday when I was a child. I don't think the bought ones taste as nice nowadays and keep meaning to make my own.
