We have just returned from the BEANO exhibition in London. It brought back so many memories. Every week my dad bought us the Beano and the Dandy, it was a highlight of our week. Occasionally he would buy the Beezer and the Topper, if funds allowed.

It was so interesting to learn about the history of the comics. I never knew that, during the war, even though paper was rationed, the comics were still printed. They encouraged children to help in the war effort as well as poke fun at Hitler.

My favourite Christmas present was always the comic annuals. Later I went on to the Bunty, I can still remember some of the features.

Girl and School Friend. I don’t know if I am remembering this right, but I think I went to a ‘Girl’ concert in Cardiff. Anyone else remember that?

GrandmaSeaDragon Thu 17-Feb-22 18:22:57

I had Girl and my brother, Eagle. I seem to remember we weren’t allowed the Beano or Dandy. The annuals we received at Christmas were Brownies or Guides for me and Cubs and Scouts for my brother. As a teenager in the 60s, I had Pop Weekly, which had lots of pics of “pop stars” in black and white! My favourites ended up all over my bedroom walls. I also remember collecting “Knowledge” which came as a weekly magazine and built up to make a childrens encyclopaedia in 5 binders, used lots of information from that in many school projects.

My six year old granddaughter gets the Beano delivered every Saturday and loves it. For Christmas, she received a personalised Beano annual. Something to treasure.
I tried to get the Dandy for her, but it is no more.

For me it was Bunty, a special treat was Judy, then I moved on to Jackie. Of course, the first page I went to was the problem page. All that teenage angst!

3dognight Thu 17-Feb-22 18:52:20

Yes all that teenage angst on the Cathy and Claire problem page in Jackie!

Always read that first, then probably drooled over Marc Bolan smile

Marydoll Thu 17-Feb-22 18:56:41

Oh happy days and a sneak peak at the problem pages in my friend's mother's Woman and Woman's Own.
My own mother read the People's Friend and My Weekly.
Not quite the same!

Nannee49 Thu 17-Feb-22 20:11:45

Bunty for me, Judy for my Sis, Valiant for our baby Brother. I remember winning a stamp album from Valiant as they gave prizes if your birthday matched one of the random dates printed and worrying that I wouldn't qualify because I was a girl?

Woodmouse Thu 17-Feb-22 20:16:12

A few years ago DH bought me some original Twinkle comics for my birthday. I have them still.

Oldnproud Thu 17-Feb-22 20:20:56

Jack and Jill, then later Diana and Sandy (or Sandie), and Jackie occasionally.

I can still remember the pictures in my Bunty Christmas annuals.

I still have my Bunty annuals!

Rather shabby, they are in the loft. I occasionally have a wallow, and am transported back 60 or so years. I can remember the stories so well.

I wasn't allowed a comic! I had to have Look and Learn. I was so envious of friends with Bunty, Judy and the Beano etc.

Oh, poor you!

Look and Learn looked so boring, read by all the swotty types ( no offence meant)!

Patsy70 Thu 17-Feb-22 20:31:02

School Friend and Topper comics/annuals for me in the late ‘50s.

boheminan Thu 17-Feb-22 20:38:50

Kim19 I'm pleased you mention 'Sunny Stories' as it's what I had when I was very young. Now none of my friends have heard of it, so I was beginning to question if maybe I was imagining it.

When I left home my mum got rid of all of my dolls, teddies and books. I’ve managed to find some through book searches though. And now eBay of course. I loved film annuals too.

SachaMac Thu 17-Feb-22 21:14:57

I used to have a comic called Princess Tina, delivered every week, my sister got Twinkle. At Christmas I got Bunty or Diana annuals & still have a Diana annual from 1969. I moved on to Jackie in the early 70’s, buying it on the way home from school. We used to love the Dear Doctor column and pop posters.

Me and my sister had
The School Friend
Girl
Bunty - I loved The Four Mary's - Mary Field, Mary Radleigh, Mary Simpson and Mary Cotter. I can see them now.
Those cut out dolls and clothes on the back page.
My brother's had The Beezer, Dandy Topper and Beano. I can remember lots of characters from those too! We all had Annuals at Christmas.

Four Marys - me too. Fieldy , Raddy, Simpy and Cotty!

Great to find so many Bunty fans. I have always loved cut-dolls to dress.

I have a question for you. One of the characters in Bunty was a a teenaged who was very fashionably. One story that stuck in my mind was when she faced many hair-raising activities on a walk. She calmly dealt with each but suddenly ran home screaming. The reason was that she had discovered the seams or her nylons were not straight.

Not being fashioned myself, I did not understand the story, but it has stayed in my mind for 60 odd years. So who was she.?

rubysong Thu 17-Feb-22 22:51:44

The first comic we had was Robin, then Dandy and Beano, followed by Bunty then Jackie. Nobody else has mentioned Robin, have I imagined it?

rubysong Thu 17-Feb-22 22:56:09

I've just googled and can't find the Robin comic I remember. I'm not talking about Batman's sidekick. The Robin I remember was for very small children.

Bellanonna Thu 17-Feb-22 23:00:35

I remember Sunny Stories. Was that an Enid Blyton magazine?
The boy next door used to get a comic called Radio Fun, which he passed on to me. That would have been around 1950 I think. TV in the home was very uncommon then.

I remember at jumble sales you could buy stacks of old comics.
It was also where I got a lot of my Chalet School and Angela Brazil books. Happy memories.

Shelflife Fri 18-Feb-22 09:52:59

Remember them all so well , mu Mum was an avid reader and was happy to see us read comics. My big favourite was Bunty! I won a prize with Bunty , wrote a poem about the sadness of a tree being blown down in a storm !! My prize was A Bunty scarf ( red and blue tartan) and a blue plastic wallet - I was absolutely delighted with my success. My poem is still in my head word for word !! I was 10 years old. Happy memories.

littleflo Fri 18-Feb-22 09:57:35

The BEANO exhibition is well worth a visit and you can buy a
copy of the comic with all the history.

One of the funniest exhibits was a bit more modern. It was a ‘cease and desist’ letter to Jacob Rees-Mogg. He was accused of copying Lord Snooty.

Calendargirl Fri 18-Feb-22 10:03:34

Was anyone else a member of the Bunty Club?

I was, I still have the badge and membership card, the badge was a little black Scottie dog. There is a secret code for members only.

( I really should get out more).
