Nostalgia for Childhood comics.

We have just returned from the BEANO exhibition in London. It brought back so many memories. Every week my dad bought us the Beano and the Dandy, it was a highlight of our week. Occasionally he would buy the Beezer and the Topper, if funds allowed.

It was so interesting to learn about the history of the comics. I never knew that, during the war, even though paper was rationed, the comics were still printed. They encouraged children to help in the war effort as well as poke fun at Hitler.

My favourite Christmas present was always the comic annuals. Later I went on to the Bunty, I can still remember some of the features.

Loved Bunty, Judy, School Friend, Princess, then Mirabelle and Fabulous. I also still have a few annuals.

I was a childminder and one summer I had the care of 10 children for 6 weeks. One day I made a steak pie in a Roasting tin. As I brought it in, one of my Mindees said. “OH Cow Pie”.

Forty years later my kids and GCs still use the name.

I love reading all of the posts on these thread. It makes me feel like I a am are still part of a community.

Comics were banned in my house until I could get my maths up to scratch so I had to read other people's comics. I loved reading my friend's Judy and her brother's Beano.

The arms and legs of the cut-out Bunty dolls would always be in slighhtly different positions, so the clothes of one woiuld not fit the others.

I used to love the clothes with the little tabs that folded.
My mum always thought they were silly though.

I used to get the Beano, sometimes the Dandy but the Eagle was by far my favourite.

Bunty then Jackie (such innocent questions on the Cathy & Claire page “Should I kiss my boyfriend”) then eventually Cosmopolitan!!

I wasn't allowed a comic every week just occasionally, and always one when we went on holiday. But I would usually be given an Annual at Christmas. I still have all my Rupert Bear Annuals. I liked Bunty, Judy, Diana and Jacky. Didn't like Beano or the Beezer.

From being little I got a weekly comic delivered to the house. Started with the baby ones, then Judy, Jackie, Romeo in that order. Mum got Woman magazine so when comics stopped I read that.

I was always nose in a book , but we did not actually get comics bought for us but of course I read as many of those that I could beg borrow or pick up.So cant remember which comic it was in but remember Desperate Dan with the big cow pie with the horns through the pastry, and Dennis the Menace and was itt Beryl the Peril? Probably shows my age by how old these charactors are!

M0ira Fri 18-Feb-22 15:21:34

My sister and I had “Look and Learn” I loved Nurse Susan and Doctor David! My two older brothers had The Beano and Dandy. They fiercely guarded them and wouldn’t allow us to read their comics. Surprisingly they never wanted to read ours.????

missingmarietta Fri 18-Feb-22 14:57:40

I always had the Beano and the Dandy...Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx, the Bash Street Kids and Desperate Dan stick in my mind.

I used to read my [boy] friend's' Roy of the Rovers comics then went onto the Bunty. For some reason I didn't get the Bunty but used to go to my friends house and read them all there for ages while she would play 'dressing up' on her own. I wasn't interested in that. I've always been a bookworm.

I was probably putting my pocket money into saving for books like 'Famous Five', 'William' and 'Jennings' series etc.

The Girl and Schoolfriend.

I used to have Bunty delivered and Jackie. The Bunty annual at Christmas. I can't remember any of the stories now though.

I was a tomboy and read The Valiant comic.

I had Pippin or Jack and Jill when I was very small. When I was older l had Judy or Bunty and Diana. My brother had the Dandy. As a young teenager it was Jackie, along with all my friends. The Cathy and Claire page was a must as we would give our own solutions to the problems. How innocent they seem now.
As a side note, as a private music teacher l have a book case with some Beano and Dandy annuals for children to look at if they are waiting for brothers or sisters. Interestingly, the one they like best is the one that is about forty years old as it has the children being put over their parent or teacher’s knee, which the modern ones do not.

MissAdventure Fri 18-Feb-22 14:11:42

I always really, really wanted some of the things advertised in U.S comics.
Xray glasses, but most of all, sea monkeys - pictured as little tiny monkeys, swimming and playing under the water.
I was desperate for some!

Alioop my Grandad took The Sunday Post and always saved me the kids bit, I loved the antics of The Broons & Oor Wullie sat on his bucket. I still buy a Broons calendar or Annual occasionally, just takes me right back. Wonderful how they never age smile

PinkCosmos Fri 18-Feb-22 13:55:40

Bunty, June and School Friend, Mandy, Judy and later as I got older Jackie and Petticoat.

I also used to get Beano and Dandy occasionally.

There used to be a stall at our local market which used to sell American comics. I used to get Casper and Little Dot

I had a work colleague who used to work at Jackie magazine. She told me they used to make quite a bit of the stuff up. I remember reading that David Cassidy liked tea and coffee mixed together. Turns out it was made up. I was devastated shock as I had actually tried the tea/coffee combo when I was about 13. I was a huge David Cassidy fan in those days

GrannyGear Fri 18-Feb-22 13:54:45

I used to get comics for younger chldren called "Chicks' Own" and "Tiny Tots". Anyone remember these? Perhaps you are all too young.

Alioop Fri 18-Feb-22 13:43:30

I used to read Twinkle as a child and then Bunty. I loved my dad's Sunday Post newspaper so I could read Oor Wullie and The Broons and then my teenage years were spent reading Jackie, My Guy and Oh Boy!, ripping out the pictures of gorgeous boys to stick on my bedroom wall. Those were the days....

Nannan2 Fri 18-Feb-22 13:38:59

The comics aren't the same nowadays though, and its like youngsters are missing out- particularly as they are so expensive! Kids often don't have that kind of money to buy upwards of £3.99 comics- many are much more- i treat my GC to a comic sometimes, but most of them live further away from me- i take them one when i visit..i used to get a subscription for some when they were younger, but now they are extortionate prices too! I do get them all an annual every christmas though. And a proper book.I like to encourage their reading, even the older ones.

Nannan2 Fri 18-Feb-22 13:29:05

Oh yes this took me right back- (I'm 58 now) once a week mum took me to town to the 'paper shop' and i got a few comics, which were only really cheap back then(late 60's - early 70's) it was my treat as i was an early, and avid reader-i went on to the older girls mags about 12- 13- jackie, teen girl etc still got bunty, and on 2nd hand book stall in the market i got american comics, casper the friendly ghost, Richie Rich etc- i still have a couple of those, i wonder if they're worth anything??? its interesting to note that someone mentioned Playbox-i never got that but its still around today is Playbox- more modern & updated now of course, meant for pre-schoolers.

I grew up in the US and loved Little Lulu comics, don't think they were available in UK.

I remember Little Lulu, but I don’t know how I got them. I’m in England. We did see some American magazines.

I loved Bunty it was so good. had a lot of ballet and boarding school stories another world for me!
I loved the annuals would lose myself in them for a Sunday afternoon!

Me too, trouble was, I just assumed that one day, I too, would be attending boarding school or ballet school and, of course, own a horse! Disappointment was enormous!
