Nostalgia for Childhood comics.

I had Beano and Dandy from time to time because my dad liked them. I had Robin and then Swift, and then moved on to Girl. There are a lot of famous women whose stories I mainly remember from the back page of Girl! I loved Topper as well. They had really interesting articles in the centre pages.

I used to love the free gifts on some of them in a little plastic packet on the front cover. Usually hair slides, little popper bracelets, pretend make up or something. Such simple times.

I always got the Bunty and the Judy, sometimes the Mandy, including the Christmas annuals. Moved on to the Jackie when I was older.
But my favourite was the Hotspur. My older brother used to get this, and Mum never stopped the order when he left home as both myself and my maternal g’dad enjoyed it. The stories were much more exciting than the ones in the girl’s comics. We also liked the Commando comics, which were all wartime stories.
I also used to get the occasional other DCThomson comic, and usually got the holiday specials of lots of them. How I wish I’d kept them, certain copies are worth the proverbial small fortune.

I had Girl and School Friend, my brother has Eagle, and another?? I think they were delivered on Tuesdays, and that was my favourite day.

I was lucky as my dad owned a newsagents and I used to sit under the counter reading Beano and Dandy and sometimes Topper and Beezer before putting them back for sale ?

I can still remember the pictures in my Bunty Christmas annuals.

Mine was 'Sunny stories'. Came out every Thursday. Drove my Mum daft once I learned days of the week. She resorted to telling it me it was any day but Wednesday until I twigged.

Twinkle was my favourite. Loved it.

Then Jackie when a bit older.

I wasn't allowed a comic! I had to have Look and Learn. I was so envious of friends with Bunty, Judy and the Beano etc.

Like others mentioned I had the Bunty and Judy, my brother had the Eagle and the Victor. I read them as well and remember particularly the Tough of the Track, Alf Tupper who was a working class runner always rushing from work to the Saturday afternoon meetings for his job as a welder? when I was older I graduated to the Valentine and the Mirabelle for advice on boyfriends. Happy days looking forward to the next issue.

Loved stories about ballet, though never did it myself, and took a rather ghoulish interest in stories of poor children who were orphaned and either brought up in orphanages or with cruel stepmothers who made them do all the housework

Girls comics usually had stories about aspiring gymnasts or talented ballerinas afflicted with cruel stepmothers. I remember having to wait a full week to read the next instalment.

Today's comics are a ridiculous price and aimed at very young children. There's a 'free' gift every single week and the comic is usually based on a TV character.

I used to get the Bunty comic too. I can remember the 4 Mary’s and especially Lettuce Leaf! Went on to Jackie as I became older.

Jack and Jill, Robin, Bunty, Judy, School friend ,Princess and Look and learn. had them all at one time or another. I loved the Christmas annuals and was always given two one to keep me in bed on Christmas morning the other to open with my presents and keep me quiet in the afternoon.
I did swops with Boy cousins for Beano, Dandy and Topper.
My late mother always liked a Peoples friend annual amongst her presents.

I used to get Bunty and loved the cut out dolls and clothes on the back. I also used to get Diana,Twinkle and when I got older Jackie. Loved all the posters that ended up on my bedroom wall.

When I was a young child in the 1940s, I wasn’t allowed comics. I didn’t hanker after the Beano, but I did want School Friend. The nearest I and my brother got to comics was the Playbox Annual at Christmas.

One of my sons, however, was a Beano addict. I didn’t forbid it!

In 1959 I was give a School Friend Pets Annual for Christmas - I loved that book and was delighted to find the same in good condition in a 2nd hand bookshop some years ago.,
