Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

Rowantree ? ?

Our suburban road is having a street party. We plan to make ourselves scarce, or construct a tableau in the front garden of a guillotine and a basket with a few severed heads wearing tiaras.

So does Spain.

But at least they won't have wall to wall jubilee parties.

We're planning a trip to Spain. First time abroad since Covid.

We went to Norway when the last royal wedding was on.

But Norway has a constitutional monarchy .....
?

The republicans wanted a name change but were overruled. They're still coming and we hope a good time will be had by all.

There is always the proviso of it being a Getting to Know You party.

You wouldn't get me to a Jubilee Street Party for love nor money. grin

I've shredded your invitation!

Someone asking on Facebook if there was a poster for Abolish the monarchy to put in her window in June when jubilee waste of money spent haha

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 16:33:26

I hadn't notice you mention it, that's all!

volver Sun 13-Mar-22 16:27:28

I thought you might have forgotten. I mean its not like I talk about it all the time. wink

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 16:25:57

I'm in Scotland.

Thanks for letting me know, * volver*
I might not have realised if you hadn't said.

???

Rowantree Sun 13-Mar-22 16:20:42

No, we don't. However, Ms Windsor can call herself what she likes as long as she doesn't expect taxpayers to fund her dysfunctional family.

maddyone

Well I started this thread, and after 574 posts I still don’t know if we need the monarchy or not grin

Let me explain maddyone

The monarchy is a waste of space and money. They get £345 million

Queen and Charles lobby ministers for their own interests and queen's consent too to vet legislation over 1000 laws many to favour them, we are led to believe monarchy is above politics.
RF just attend they don't work which leaves lots and lots of free time to pursue their interests. No benefit to charities of royal patronage an independent report by Giving Evidence found. Check it.
The palace of Versailles has many more visitors than here in U.K. RF has no impact on tourism either.
There is PR and propaganda of monarchy which is a deception to the British public.
The monarch won't uphold nor defend our constitution getting public money she should do so. Presidents of European countries do defend their constitution, in the case of a rouge government as we have now queen can't intervene if laws are broken.
The monarch only does what the PM asks her pointless and powerless.
There are many palaces castles grand houses which queen and extended family use at very little rent or free despite having 2,3, or 4 houses of their own.
Something doesent have to be illegal to be corrupt The RF are in public office for private gain which doesn't help our country the opposite. RF are a drain on our economy.

So that's a few things to be going on with there is no positives in having a monarchy.

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 16:01:00

Bids?
What is that about? Nothing official here.
Ours is just a neighbourly get together. We have new neighbours and it's a chance for them to get to know others.

Bah Humbugs need not come.

volver Sun 13-Mar-22 15:48:59

I'm in Scotland.

Highly unlikely that there will even be a Jubilee Street Party, if the last time is anything to go by.

How about being on the fence? Monarchy yes - tourism, blah, blah blah. The pageantry involved is unbeatable. Monarchy no - surely in the year 2022 we should not be looking up to a family purely because of an accident of their birth. Most of them are pretty grim. One or two can be admired. I won’t say who as that would let lose another set of tirades!

Me neither. I’ve already turned down the invite, though I offered to contribute.
Are you likely to be invited?

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 15:36:42

Nah, I really am bored now.

I got bored ages ago with the ranting.
However, thought I'd pop back to see how it was going ?

Groundhog Day.

Must get back to helping to organise the Jubilee Street Party, even our resident republicans are keen.
Any excuse!! ??

volver Sun 13-Mar-22 15:32:40

Nah, I really am bored now.

The standard of debate with a Monarchist. What can you do?

I'll wait with baited breath for someone to ask if we want to end up with a President like Trump/Blair/Johnson and how can a president be non-political. And how we can afford the elections. And why democracy isn't all its cracked up to be.

Mollygo Sun 13-Mar-22 15:29:40

As I said, some ‘republican posters are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what republicans are.

volver Sun 13-Mar-22 15:24:20

But Mollygo, some posters on here (no names, no pack drill) will try to defend the Monarch and her large family, with completely irrelevant comments. And some will ask the same questions about republicanism over and over, and just ignore any answers. And others will denigrate the Heads of State of other countries, just because they personally are a bit unsophisticated and have never heard of them.

I'm sure you can't have missed that?

So its clear to me, that some monarchists are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what monarchists are.

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 15:23:04

Mollygo

But Volver, G and P repeat things so often I thought that’s what republicans do. If you’ve never read a repeated post from them re the monarchy or the RF, then you must have missed their threads.
I never said they were thick. It’s their opinion, they can post it as often as they want so I don’t know why you mind it when I do the same.

Some posts are like Groundhog Day and have been for years, Mollygo

but republican posters on here like repetition

Why, do you think we're thick Mollygo?
No, it's because the always right republicans think other posters are and need educating!

In fact, some of us have thought long and hard about the pros and cons of a constitutional monarchy -v- a presidential system.
