Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

Anniebach Sun 13-Mar-22 13:44:13

Need ? No, head of state ? yes. Queen/King or President ?

maddyone Sun 13-Mar-22 13:36:45

Well I started this thread, and after 574 posts I still don’t know if we need the monarchy or not grin

Grany Sun 13-Mar-22 13:30:18

You can sign a petition on Republic website to Abolish the monarchy

volver Sun 13-Mar-22 13:24:17

but republican posters on here like repetition

Why, do you think we're thick Mollygo?

That's not very nice.

And some monarchists are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what monarchists are.

I'm just staying in afternoon and reading the Republican's Rulebook.

Rule 1 - Repeat things.

Rule 2 - Think about the brave new world.

Rule 3 - Repeat things.

And some monarchists are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what monarchists are.

Well I have ‘got something on’, but republican posters on here like repetition so
. . .
As I said, some ‘republican posters are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what republicans are.

(This is boring, but I've got nothing on this afternoon, so....)

(This could go on a while.)

There have been monarchists on here who have been derogatory about other countries' presidents. I mean truly dismissive and rude.

Are we to say they are setting a bad example of what monarchists are?

Absolutely-there may be republican posters who will be only too sorry they didn’t think of saying that before and will adopt it into their mantra.

I didn't know but there is a petition to abolish the monarchy on Republic website grin to those interested

Farzanah

I am a republican but having a different point of view is not being “rude” is it?

Absolutely not, Farzanah but. . .

As I said, some ‘republican posters are often so rude and derogatory that it sets a bad example of what republicans are.

nanna8 Sun 13-Mar-22 11:59:01

I think the RF are pretty rude with their monetary dealings.

Anniebach Sun 13-Mar-22 11:26:13

Definitely Mollygo , some posts cause fear of a republic,

Animal Farm comes to mind

Farzanah Sun 13-Mar-22 11:25:45

I tend to agree with what Hilary Mantel was reported as saying last year in the Telegraph, that she believes the Royal Family is in its end game, and won’t survive beyond two generations.
Unfortunately I won’t be here to see it.

Callistemon21 Sun 13-Mar-22 11:16:07

I think we know.

Grany Sun 13-Mar-22 11:14:05

It is time for Britons to ask what the monarchy is actually for

Grany Sun 13-Mar-22 11:11:29

We have a very unequal society and people celebrating and revering ‘celebrities’ does more to damage society than the RF does.
Setting examples of rudeness and derogatory comments and thus implying that it’s OK to do so because you’re a republican and you don’t like the RF doesn’t do anything for the republican cause, but some posters on GN seem to think it’s OK.
If being a republican means being frequently rude and nasty as G and P demonstrate, it makes not being a republican a very attractive option.

RF queen is our HoS so is at the top of and perpetuates an unequal society. Celebraties earn their own wealth not given from public purse.
Elizabeth is queen name so can be shortened like anyone's name
I don't think Lizzie and Co necessarily is particularly derogatory it's plain speaking. I've heard worse spoken about RF

Farzanah Sun 13-Mar-22 11:11:07

But the RF are modern day “celebrities” Mollygo especially the younger ones.
The press are always full of pics particularly of Catherine. They apparently sell papers, well the tabloids.
They are just a modern day soap opera, and an expensive one at that

I think in the uk you are stuck with them but it is high time we broke away from them in Australia. I don’t like them, feel no connection with them and just think it is time we grew up and stood on our own feet. Rather have the Danes ,if we have to have one of those families, because at least they have connections with Australia via Princess Mary.

Grany Sun 13-Mar-22 10:40:50

The wealth she has accumulated over her role as HoS

Plus we know Sovereign Grant now stands at £85 million can only go up not down

Plus Duchy of Lancaster gives her while she is queen £22 million and going up. Charles gets same amount £22 million from Duchy of Cornwall going up

nadateturbe Sun 13-Mar-22 10:35:13

Callistemon I know you didn't say that. Anniebach mentioned the use of Lizzie.
Grany I agree with republican views but Paddyann was using Lizzie in a derogatory way.

The RF are exempt from FOI.

I'm off! don't like arguing.
