The Nextdoor App - thoughts? ?

Hello
Yesterday I downloaded the Nextdoor app, and did all the necessary doings.

It’s not the first time I’ve done it; the previous time it mildly freaked me out and I deleted it.

I feel quite uncomfortable with my full name being on show; and I’ve been inundated by men (only men) wanting to ‘connect’.

I’ve had a pleasant chat with a lady regarding my need for a cleaner, so that’s one positive.

What are your experiences with Nextdoor?
Thank you smilebrew

Doodledog the reason that I’m not keen on my full name being on show is because I’m an ex-teacher, and kids love finding this sort of thing
In addition, I’m actually quite vulnerable myself as is my husband.

Also, in the past, a very dodgy neighbour used my husband’s business details and our address to open a credit account.

Right, that makes sense.

I suppose I'm used to using SM in my own name, and would only use it to report a found purse or lost cat, or when I know my posts are only seen by friends (I keep FB and so on locked right down).

I still sometimes get emails from them (usually trying to sell me things) even though I deleted the app ages ago.

Sounds like an up dated Neighbourhood Watch. We’ve had neighbours in the past who mistook this for ‘ Neighbour Watch’!

I m the same Serendippy can do everything the same on the local pages on Fb and keep some kind of anonymity whilst also covering a much wider local area my Fb page covers the whole 3 /4 miles of town
I used to hold a working post which involved working in the general community so my name is recognisable by many people, also the various voluntary work I do so I prefer not to be so noticed

I registered a few years ago when Streetlife was taken over by then.

I realised my address was made public and quickly deleted.

Kalu Fri 25-Feb-22 09:50:22

I was on it for a while. Receiving and reading many posts which were of no interest, further afield from where I live plus annoying adverts, I deleted the app. I receive all the news I need in our local Facebook app.

FannyCornforth Fri 25-Feb-22 09:58:21

Kalu it driving me potty already for all of those reasons!
It will not accept my password whatever I do.
So I can’t edit my name.
I doubt that I’ll even be able to delete the dratted thing without a password! ?

I’ve found Nextdoor very good for publicising events, selling items and information about local services. I’m not that happy about my name and location as some people will know exactly who I am.

What I haven’t like is it is becoming much more of a chat forum. Loads of “Hi neighbour, I’m Jo, just moved into the area/lived here 30years” kind of thing. And the latest is political debates as you would get on a chat forum except everyone knows who you are. Now I just look for information postings and avoid chat postings.

Fanny
I can’t get rid of it, I still get dozens of messages, I just ignore them.

FannyCornforth Fri 25-Feb-22 10:31:53

Oh Lord, no!

JaneJudge Fri 25-Feb-22 10:33:37

I don't want to join it but my next door neighbour is on it and she tells me anything I need to know anyway. That said, i'm on our villge facebook page which I suppose is the same but luckily it is all very pleasant, any nastiness gets short shrift and is deleted straight away and it is just about stuff like chickens being loose

Blossoming Fri 25-Feb-22 10:35:52

I’m on it, used it to find an electrician to do a few small jobs. Not had any strange men trying to char me up though!

Galaxy Fri 25-Feb-22 10:36:23

I have joined it and am too lazy to delete but dont think it's great. I have never posted.

nadateturbe Fri 25-Feb-22 10:54:30

Fanny you are probably still logged in. Should be able to tap 3 dots choose settings, account, and deactivate.

nadateturbe Fri 25-Feb-22 10:56:19

I just access through nextdoor.co.uk. No need to use app. You should see 3 dots lower right.

nadateturbe Fri 25-Feb-22 11:00:02

B***er! You have to enter password to accept changes. Sorry. blush

Esspee Fri 25-Feb-22 11:01:26

I thought the whole point was that you use your name as you are a member of a local community. When pseudonyms are used this can result in trolling. I am happy to be identified through any information I give on my Nextdoor app.

FannyCornforth Fri 25-Feb-22 11:05:21

No, I’m definitely not happy with it Esspee, for the reasons I gave up thread.
And it’s not just my local area.
It’s loads of areas around my city, some of which are less than salubrious.
And at least one poster has said that their address was visible

FannyCornforth Fri 25-Feb-22 11:06:41

I’d be far more relaxed about putting my full name on heresmile

nadateturbe Fri 25-Feb-22 11:07:48

It let me deactivate although I won't believe it until I stop receiving emails.
After reading some of these posts I decided better to just stick either local fb.

Rosalyn69 Fri 25-Feb-22 14:29:02

I tried ours. It seemed to be full of people wanting work done for free or asking for freebies.

Jaxjacky Fri 25-Feb-22 14:35:39

Hours had so many adverts I deleted it after a couple of days. Similar to others, our local Facebook pages are pretty useful.

There is a really funny forum on Reddit about this sort of thing.
It’s called ‘Choosing Beggars’ grin

cornergran Fri 25-Feb-22 16:11:12

I’ve been able to simply show my first name and area, no surname or address. I think I changed it in the settings. No problem logging out either. I wonder if areas differ? I’m not a Facebook user so no idea how it compares.

BBbevan Fri 25-Feb-22 18:32:28

Unsubscribed a few days ago. Rubbish !!
