Brand ‘Snobbery’?

Not talking about the latest designer wear, just plain old groceries.

I have bought supermarket own brands for some time now, porridge, butter, cleaning stuff, condiments, et al, but the one thing I have held out against is cocoa. DH and I always have a mug of proper cocoa at night, and I have refused to buy anything but a very well known traditional brand. Unfortunately, my local Tesco has stopped having it. It was with great reluctance I bought a tin of their own brand.

Quelle surprise! as Del Boy would say. I actually preferred it! Smoother and more chocolatey. An added bonus, a whole £1 cheaper.

A lesson learned.

We were surprised how good Aldi Beans were too. Didn,t like Waitrose own brand though.

I stick with the same tea and instant coffee, Yorkshire gold, and Kenko really rich. I prefer the cheapest condiments, tomato sauce, etc as they are more vinegary which I prefer.

Tough stringy beand- you're overcooking them/not cooking enough/a rubbish cook.......

At a friend’s for dinner I praised the green beans because they are often tough and these were perfect - they were Tesco’s frozen!

Shock horruer!!! Really? Are you for real? Do you think there are special crops/factories/cows/etc set up specifically for 'own brand' products?! Ha haaaa! Never heard such a load of codswallop! It ALL comes out of the same place, a spur is a spud flour is flour(same mills) drinking choc is same, difference usually may be down to packaging advertising and the strongest difference of all- psychological influence! Taste test. Do it. See?

I also love Aldi baked beans Grey Duster. They seem to have a lot less sugar in them. The only thing I don't like of there's is evaporated milk.

I was told that cheese for different supermarkets was made and packed in the same factories but that M&S cheese had the shortest sell by dates on it.

Worked as a student packing biscuits one summer into tins, boxes etc. Amazing how many different packages there were for the different outlets but still the same biscuits came through

Seeing as most of the own brands are manufactured at the same factory and often to the same recipe as the branded, just the packaging that differs!
I often do a big shop and only choose own brands! The only disappointment is the Stockwell baked beans from Tesco - they are a bit watery ! Oh and the Stockwell tea bags are weak!

Has anyone found the cheapest 'Scratch' for sale?
wink

blueberry1 Tue 01-Mar-22 14:35:35

Definitely generic painkillers and cough medicines. Used to be a Lurpak Spreadable only buyer but now I have found out that Aldi's version is the exact same recipe at a much lower price.

For me brands are not important. It's what's in the product that counts. Any brand with 'nasties' in it gets the thumbs down from me, and if the contents are all good then I don't care what the brand is. However, I do also consider supermarket policies towards their growers and suppliers because if they use their might to squeeze every last bit of energy out of these people, then even if the product is good I won't buy it. Sometimes I think own brands and their inevitable cheaper price tag encourage us all to expect our food for next to nothing.

I shop with Waitrose and buy a lot of there own brand.
There baked beans are excellent and cheaper, the tinned soups and tin rice pudding is nice not as sweet as ambrosia.
There very fair prices on other Waitrose food too.

MissAdventure Tue 01-Mar-22 13:55:59

I'm going to definitely give asda baked beans a try, next time I shop.

Fronkydonky Tue 01-Mar-22 13:52:52

We buy mostly Lidl/Aldi own branded goods and have no problem with them. The things I refuse to swap are Diet Coke , Hellman’s mayonnaise, Coleman’s mustard ( own brands are illuminous) we never buy value kitchen or loo rolls either. We never buy cheap pet food either, our dog has the best of everything due to the high meat content. We have Yorkshire Tea but have bought Aldi Gold tea bags in the past& agree they’re quite tasty.

My husband always insisted on buying H...z baked beans, after trying Lidl's he would not go back, far too sweet. We shop for our elderly neighbour as well, she found H...z Spaghetti Hoops far to sweet and prefers Lidl. As the latter are mainly aimed at children, I find it inexcusable to ruin their poor tastebuds with over sweet products. Coffee has to be Carte Noire, been boycotting the N..... brand for over 50 years, due to totally unethical trading practices. Always hoping more people will join me there.

BlueBalou Tue 01-Mar-22 13:41:51

I will happily buy Lidl or Aldi equivalent products, but I do prefer Hellman’s or Heinz mayonnaise.
I’ve never been a food snob?

nipsmum Tue 01-Mar-22 13:40:54

I would try a cheaper brand , I have no problem if I prefer it. I am definitely not brand snobbish.

Zoejory Tue 01-Mar-22 13:30:14

Don't know if this has been mentioned but M&S Baked Beans are absolutely fabulous.

And they are cheaper than Heinz as well

knspol Tue 01-Mar-22 13:19:50

Just started buying Waitrose baked beans as opposed to that well known brand and I love them. Bonus, apart from being much cheaper, is that the tin is full of beans instead of sauce!

I always used to buy Fairy Platinum dishwasher capsules until I got into trying to be plastic free as well as reducing the chemical impact. I found Smol and ordered a a sample of nine tablets, just paying a pound for postage. I was so impressed that I ordered a pack if 35 which was £4.50. I also tried their laundry capsules and was equally impressed. Not only are they more environmentally friendly, you can work out how often you need to reorder and they send an email when it’s coming up to your next delivery, you can log into your account to change that if you wish. The packs are delivered in cardboard letterbox size packs and on top of all that they’re cheaper. I’ve introduced them to family and friends and they all agree.

Many own brands are more than ok, but there's only one brand for beanz imo, and we all know which one that is, no other supermarket's own, or indeed any other well known producer of the humble baked beanz doez it for me sad

I thought that for may years, then a local supermarket had a blind tasting set up on their forecourt. I was amazed to find that my preferred beans were a branded product but significantly cheaper than **z! I buy them all the time now! You could be surprised and it is often worth trying a different brand just to see.

I love the TV programmes where they take the labels off products and show that families can't always tell the difference between their usual brand and a substitute. Even when they can tell the difference they often opt for the cheaper option as the difference is so small and the saving so great!

dogsmother Tue 01-Mar-22 12:59:01

I meant to continue with I am open to trying all things less expensive as it seems they are often very good.

dogsmother Tue 01-Mar-22 12:57:06

I will have frozen vegetables of the cheapest available as I rarely use them, mainly spinach and sweet corn. Spinach does have to be leaf and I’ve not noticed one being any better however it’s not usually eaten as a stand alone. The tea is always Yorkshire.

Theoddbird Tue 01-Mar-22 12:48:02

A lot of supermarket own brands are made in the same factories as branded. It is very possible that they are the same product. I always buy supermarket own brands where I can.
