Brand ‘Snobbery’?

Not talking about the latest designer wear, just plain old groceries.

I have bought supermarket own brands for some time now, porridge, butter, cleaning stuff, condiments, et al, but the one thing I have held out against is cocoa. DH and I always have a mug of proper cocoa at night, and I have refused to buy anything but a very well known traditional brand. Unfortunately, my local Tesco has stopped having it. It was with great reluctance I bought a tin of their own brand.

Quelle surprise! as Del Boy would say. I actually preferred it! Smoother and more chocolatey. An added bonus, a whole £1 cheaper.

A lesson learned.

Ps with lime and tonic

The Scottish gin ‘Hendricks’ has to be THE ONE! With cucumber and ice.
Ditto the Scottish malt ‘Cardhu’.
Some things in life are worth paying extra for! ???????

The generic paracetamol from the chemist tends to break and crumble when it is taken out of the packet.

Supermarket cheapies seem better.

Sorry, Bombay Sapphire for my bi-annual G&T!
A good thing it doesn't go off.

Hellmans mayo definitely. I said Heinz earlier by mistake.

Many years ago, I worked as an administrator in a private hospital. We had a patient call us and ask for the brand of paracetamol on the drug trolley because it was superior to the brand named product she used.

It was the cheapest, generic product available.

In the absence of Baileys Chocolate Luxe in any of our local supermarkets, I’m trying Lidl’s version. Will I feel obliged to finish it, even if it isn’t as good?

When you say cocoa, Calendar, do you mean cocoa or hot chocolate? Wondering because cocoa is cocoa is cocoa and how the drink turns out depends on how you make it, e.g. whether with water or milk, whether you add sugar, etc. In my experience cocoa doesn't vary but drinking chocolate does very much so and that would totally fit what you describe ☕️ ?

Another vote for Aldi beans.
Hellmans mayo, Heinz salad cream, Daz washing pods, Fairy liquid, well known toilet and bath cleaners are a must. I buy store brands for other things as well.
The cat will only eat branded!

Jaxjacky Mon 28-Feb-22 15:10:37

HP sauce, ditto Lea and Perrins, Yorkshire tea, M&S or Stockwell baked beans, Hellmans mayo and viakal cleaner.

Casdon Mon 28-Feb-22 14:45:53

I’ll always try own brands, but there a few things that seem to be irreplaceable.
Nothing tastes the same, or even near to HP Sauce - it must have a secret ingredient. I like Taylor’s Italian blend coffee beans, I haven’t found any others as nice. Belvoir Farm ginger cordial is another one, I haven’t seen anything similar - it may be an acquired taste, but I prefer it to squash.

Have always bought ‘ own brands’ as much as possible, but many years ago, we thought we’d try an ‘own brand’ cereal, instead of a well known brand.

The kids actually spat it out at the table....it was so vile! Never ventured back there again.

Mollygo Mon 28-Feb-22 14:32:12

Generic painkillers every time. I try own brand stuff especially since the arrival of Lidl and Aldi. If we like them we continue. No idea about baked beans as I don’t eat them but it has to be Douwe Egberts and I’ve never found any other tomato soup that tastes as good to me as Heinz and I’ve probably tried at least 57 varieties.

kittylester Mon 28-Feb-22 14:26:44

There are some brands that are non negotiable Hellmanns Mayo, Napoli tinned Tom's, Heinz beans, PG Tips loose tea, Heinz tomato ketchup and my wine!! Oh, and DH loves Heinz salad cream!

Poppyred Mon 28-Feb-22 14:17:37

I find Branson’s beans far too sweet! Aldi beans are perfect as is Aldi Colombian instant coffee.

Urmstongran Mon 28-Feb-22 14:15:37

I always buy generic ibuprofen.
Never N........

Same for many pharmaceuticals. Silly to pay more for advertising and packaging.

Blossoming Mon 28-Feb-22 14:12:50

There is only one brand of baked beans and it’s Branstons.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 14:04:59

I’ve been buying Branston beans recently as the sauce is much thicker.
Yes, the Branston beans were nice Teacheranne but the sauce was so rich I couldn't finish my half a tin on toast the other day.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 14:03:47

Oddly, beans I don't mind any brand - but tea, coffee, mayo I haven't yet found substitutes.
M&S bakery cheese scones ?

It has to be YORKSHIRE! as Seen Been would say!
And Douwe Egberts

I don't eat much mayo but always buy Hellmans for those who like it.

I have to disagree about THE brand of baked beans. We stopped buying them when there seemed to be visibly fewer beanz and thinner, less tomatoey sauce. Aldi baked beans are much better.

Totally agree about the watery sauce nowadays! I’ve been buying Branston beans recently as the sauce is much thicker.

GillT57 Mon 28-Feb-22 13:56:39

We buy Aldi ground coffee for the cafetiere, at around half the price of better known brands. Aldi baked beans too. The programme with Greg whatsisname and the other guy where they swap people's favourite brands with supermarket own brands is quite enlightening.

M0nica Mon 28-Feb-22 13:41:40

Organic, like Fairtrade are not brands in the supermarket sense as lots of brands of the same product can make claims to one or the other.

They are claims that the ingredients in the product where raised under particular argicultural regimes.

I'm a Yorkshire tea fan but bought Aldi red label when desperate one day. I was surprised at the tea being ok. Not as good as Yorkshire but no t like bad tea either.

Katie59 Mon 28-Feb-22 12:34:59

Organic as a brand of course if you have the cash to do it, the premium stuff that goes past me at the till is unbelievable.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Feb-22 12:31:36

Ah, DH always insisted there was only one brand of baked beans - until they weren't available one day and we discovered Branston. smile

I'm always up for trying own brands. I've no loyalty to supermarkets, let alone to the big brands. The only time I came a cropper was when I bought Sainsbury Marmite.... envy
