I am having the maddest dreams. Anyone else?

Last night I had left my handbag in a different part of town (I don't live in a town) and I had to drive to town and go through a series of corridors and doors that led to nowhere. My passenger was a girl I knew at school who I haven't seen for almost 30 years!

My handbag was located in a building I could see but couldn't get to. When I finally got near to it I found I had no shoes on and had to go outside in the rain in my socks. I could see a room full of shoes but knew I couldn't put them on.

I never did get to my handbag

what on earth was it all about? All the doors and corridors were painted red too!

I just wondered if anyone else was having weird dreams? I feel like mine are triggered by general anxiety surrounding firstly the pandemic and now instability surrounding world peace <dramatic>

I don’t think I’ve ever dreamt about a handbag. I’m not a bag lady myself (some might disagree! grin) as I only have two, one for summer, one for winter.

My last dream was that my carpet looked corrugated and when I inspected it, the dark strips turned out to be where it was threadbare. One of my DIL’s was sitting on the floor playing with some toddlers. I lifted up the carpet nearby, the threadbare patches disintegrated and there were loads of red ants running about underneath, but my DIL told me not to worry about them as she had a spray that would deal with them. ?‍♀️

Last night I was being pursued by faceless nameless but terrifying people, I tried to escape at night to the village shop, pushing a baby in a buggy, but there was a power cut and they were shut.
So I went home, and I was in the bedroom helping my husband fold bedding when I glanced out of the window and saw my keys in the gate. I ran down to get them, but they were gone, so was my car, I was completely panicked knowing they could get in with my keys, and I thought they would put a tracker in my car.
I woke up with a hammering heart!
Fanny, your handbag theory makes sense, but I’ve personally never dreamed about handbags, and only ever have one at a time.

JaneJudge:

'hit by a ball of flames and died'

With the awful news on Ukraine it's hardly surprising.

JaneJudge and Grandma2213, thanks - and so good to know it's not just me with the staircase thing!

My daughter dreams about all her teeth falling out. She wakes in a real panic, checking that they're still there. I think that's pretty common too.

I had a new one last night. My lounge had a glass ceiling only on the front of the house and I could see the clouds moving over and the rain and sun and then the clouds turned pink and I was hit by a ball of flames and died confused

FannyCornforth Interesting theory. Clearly with five younger siblings that I usually had to look after and being a single parent I am both hunter and gatherer. Maybe that is why I dream of driving lorries and buses and carrying cars around. I must be more male than female!

Hetty58 In my stair climbing dreams the stairs are normal but there are huge gaps between the levels where there should be a landing. I'm not sure how but I somehow always manage to clamber or swing between them with my heart in my mouth.

I am rarely chased but always in a hurry and can't get there quickly because I am walking in slow motion.

I was rescuing baby birds the other night and handing them back to their mother in the nest.
Also some kind of baby mammals, (possibly squirrels), which scrambled up their mother when I rescued them and gave them back.

Hi Jane! smile
What do you think of my theory of handbags?

I think you are right smile

Hetty I have the broken staircase dreams too

Hetty58 Mon 07-Mar-22 11:09:25

I usually sleep like a log (but only for 4 or 5 hours). If I get too hot in bed, though, it triggers the same panic nightmare.

I'm in a rickety old house, racing up flights of bare stairs (with gaps, treads missing, no handrails) with a terrifying, unseen monster chasing me - and getting closer. I never reach the top, just wake up, utterly traumatised.

I think it's anxiety about getting old, losing strength, danger etc. Interesting that the house represents me, as i'm my own worst enemy.

This thread has been really interesting smile

I had a friend whose husband often said strange things while asleep or upon waking.

One morning, he earnestly asked her,

‘Are you wearing a hair net?’

(She was about 20 years old)

When she assured him that no, she wasn’t wearing a hair net;
he implored her,

‘Am I wearing a hairnet?’

It’s funny the things that you remember! grin
This must have been 30 years ago

Not so long ago I had an incredibly vivid dream that I was pregnant. (This was a first, I’d never dreamt such a thing before.)
In my dream I told myself I couldn’t possibly be pregnant - I was far too old - and woke up.

Just a day or so later we heard from a dd that she was expecting a 3rd ‘surprise’ baby. They had known for a while but at a scan had been told that there was a strong likelihood of something seriously wrong with the baby.

So until further tests revealed that worries were needless, dd and SiL had been beside themselves with worry, so hadn’t told us until they heard that all was well.

My mother was occasionally acutely telepathic over long distances, but only when someone close was in some sort of great distress. It had never happened to me before, but I’m sure my dream was a case of picking up something from dd, who was nowhere near at the time.

My husband used to have vivid dreams. I once woken by him pulling me over towards him shouting ‘look out’. I was so scared I woke him too and he said there’d been a fridge falling on me!! I said how frightening it had been and his response was ‘well I saved you didn’t I?’

Ok. My handbag theory (which doesn’t just apply to dreams).

I once heard the Freudian theory of why women like handbags so much is because they are a female version of a phallic symbol, ie a symbolic womb (or vagina).
The usual Freudian sex obsessed stuff.

But the Cornforth theory is as follows.

I am a typical bag fan; I have dozens of the things; large, small, cross body, hold all, the lot.

I also have a thing for purses, little pots, and jugs.
There was a recent thread on here where many posters said the same about pots and jugs.

And pockets - women have a thing for pockets too, don’t we.

Now, creepy Uncle Sigmund would probably say that these are all womb based fetishes too.

But, I believe that it’s all deep rooted in our Hunter Gatherer past.
Us women were the gatherers, so we were dependent upon the finest receptacles in which to put our fruit, berries, eggs and other sundries.
And why we covet other women’s (what we believe to be) superior bags.

We women love bags in exactly the same way as men (and little boys) are instinctively drawn to weapons and their more innocent replacements.

It’s Darwinian and evolutionary.

FannyCornforth Love your dream. It sounds like something I would have! I would love to hear your theory on handbags as try as I might I can't dream about them. Maybe it's because I rarely use one as I prefer a small hands free rucksack. I can't wait to go to sleep!

MayBee70 Sat 05-Mar-22 21:36:17

I had that dream where you’re falling. I woke up just as I was about to hit the ground. I know it’s a common dream to have but I’ve never had it before. Really freaked me out!

JaneJudge Sat 05-Mar-22 17:59:30

omg! I had children with me on steep steps but no handbag that i can recall

FannyCornforth Sat 05-Mar-22 16:20:38

Jane I forgot this all important detail; which I can’t believe that I omitted:

I was struggling to cope with two large handbags ? ?

PS I have developed my own post Jungian theory about the meaning of handbags in dreams, which I will share with you later!

Last night I started off by working at the primary school I used to work at. All nice and normal.

Then a plasticine model of a baby started growing, all long and thin like a plant, and out of the window into the night sky. It was miles and miles long.
Then (of course) all of the other long thin plasticine models from all corners of the world stretched across the sky to meet it.
Then it was daytime and time to leave work ( which was now in my Nan’s street ) on a little jet propelled seat thing.
DH was supposed to be meeting me, but I couldn’t find the car.
I kept on flying around on my propellor chair and got lost in a huge housing estate, looking for my dads house.

I ended up at a really busy pub where there was a wedding party.
I was desperately trying to phone DH to come and fetch me, but my phone was ridiculously complicated and I couldn’t do it sad

That was oddly cathartic blush

Interesting hair dream smile

I had a dream about a steep staircase with only one handrail last night and an adolescent boy higher up than me kept weeing on me (it wasn't graphic) and his family thought it was funny so when I got to the bottom of the staircase I followed them and the room they were in was full of doors confused also someone stole my new bottle of gin that was delivered yesterday which seems completely unrelated to the rest of the dream!

SueDonim Sat 05-Mar-22 12:46:55

I had a dream last night that I washed my hair with conditioner that meant it would dry with red and yellow polka dots! ?

happycatholicwife1 Fri 04-Mar-22 23:20:42

Used to have a lot of dreams about some sort of emergency, needing to get ahold of someone, and I have a phone to use; but, no matter how often I try, I cannot push the right number buttons for the person I'm trying to reach.

Last night I dreamt that I’d left the sink taps running for hours in the bathroom and the water was flowing out onto the landing and down the stairs before I realised.

This morning I turned on the shower and remembered I’d left my phone downstairs and I was expecting a call. I decided to nip down to get it. I read a text that had arrived. Then I sat down and had another read at the BBC news website. Then I sat another while digesting the dreadful news unfolding in Ukraine. Decided to have a cup of tea and waiting for kettle to boil I realised my combi boiler was running. I ran upstairs to find the shower had been spraying away full blast for 30 mins. Fortunately no water beyond the shower cubicle but lots of hot water and gas wasted. I’m so annoyed with myself.
