What did you have on your pancakes and what will you be giving up for Lent?

Just that really.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of Pancake Day anywhere.

Here in Germany we can't get away from it, although this year the parties and parades were subdued, and many cancelled because of Covid.

The parades in Cologne etc were converted into Peace demonstrations, but there were thousands out on the streets anyway.

Maple syrup. I don't give up anything for Lent.

I went for savoury pancakes and had shredded crispy duck and slivers of spring onion and cucumber in 2 Chinese pancakes.
I thought it was Shrove Tuesday 2 weeks ago (doh!) and we had sweet pancakes then (with fresh lemon juice & sugar).

My late husband was the pancake maker and my daughter used to have ice cream, squirty cream, raspberries, banana and chocolate sauce. Sometimes maple syrup. Bit like a pancake knicker bocker glory!

I had butter on my large Tesco buttermilk pancake. I might give up alcohol for Lent

Deedaa Tue 01-Mar-22 20:20:08

Sugar and lemon for me!

BBbevan Tue 01-Mar-22 20:25:58

I forgot it was pancake day. Can we have them tomorrow?

Callistemon21 Tue 01-Mar-22 20:38:05

Today's were the worst pancakes I've ever made.
I bought a McDougall pancake mix instead of using a traditional McDougall cookbook recipe.

I did manage two but they were stodgy, lemon and sugar helped.

As for giving something up for Lent - I forgot about that.

I had lemon and maple syrup on mine. Will try and get Mass most days for lent and give up my second cup of coffee in the morning.

Sago

Really dont like pancakes, growing up it was Shrove Tuesday then Ash Wednesday so we had to go to Mass and parade around with a dirty thumb mark on our heads.
I seem to remember Shrove Tuesday was also a day of fast and abstinence.
Certainly no meat was eaten.
Tonight’s dinner is a lamb tagine.
I will burn in Hell ?

I hadn't heard of not eating meat on Shrove Tuesday - my understanding is that everything was eaten up on Shrove Tuesday.

Beswitched Tue 01-Mar-22 20:54:42

That was my understanding too. I've never heard of Shrove Tuesday being a day of Fast and Abstinence.

Our local pancake race was cancelled due to lack of interest ?

I had lemon and sugar as usual, Mr A has butterscotch sauce. Also made a bunch of scotch pancakes for tomorrow. Used to hate making them until I realised I could whizz up the mixer in the Nuriblender. Also bought a good pancake pan last year and it makes a world of difference.

Syrup and a squeeze of orange. Sometimes they’re good with icecream.

I've not heard of not eating meat on Shrove Tuesday although we haven't eaten any today.

If everything has to be eaten up I'd better eat those two bars of chocolate I bought, before I'm tempted during Lent.

Granmarderby10 Tue 01-Mar-22 20:58:35

Yes I made pancakes for two of the Grandchildren one choose ham and cheese the other squeezy chocolate ice cream topping.
They were gobbled up quickly and they didn’t need to be called away from the computer game twice either for seconds.
High praise indeed?
Always seem to produce a messy dud one before I get into the rhythm, I call them the practice ones …I wonder why?

rubysong Tue 01-Mar-22 20:59:36

I had mine with banana and honey. I haven't given any thought to giving anything up. Maybe I'll give up chocolate.

lixy Tue 01-Mar-22 21:05:28

Lemon and sugar here.

A few years ago I resolved to be more mindful of what I was saying and so stopped myself from using all those unnecessary tags that had crept in, eg 'actually' 'at the end of the day' 'basically'. That was my most useful Lenten resolution to date.

This year? A resolution to switch the TV off when I'm not actively watching it. I so often just have it burbling away in the background during the evenings, just wasting electricity!

I haven't observed Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) or Lent for many years. I believe it was meant to use up any milk, butter or eggs which would have been given up during Lenten fasting. Even being raised Catholic, we ate normally during Lent.
I guess it's more of an excuse to celebrate pancakes, which I do love. I haven't made crepes in years, since my pan is cast iron and my stove-top is glass. I should look for a lighter pan, and treat the GC. We always had ours with brown sugar and extra butter.

Auntieflo Tue 01-Mar-22 21:25:14

I was going to make pancakes, but cheated and we had bought blueberry ones from Waitrose. DH had sugar and lemon, I had golden syrup and lemon. They were OK, but not as nice as home made.

Millie22 Tue 01-Mar-22 21:25:26

Orange and lemon with sugar on our pancakes. Nothing given up for Lent as I had enough of that years ago with religion all the time.

Georgesgran Tue 01-Mar-22 21:25:26

No pancakes here. I think I’ll give up still wine and stick to the fizzy stuff?!

MiniMoon Tue 01-Mar-22 21:27:05

A sprinkle of sugar on mine. I forgot to pick a lemon so didn't have lemon juice.
DH had maple syrup on his.

mokryna Tue 01-Mar-22 21:30:15

I forgot sad too late now.

Calendargirl Tue 01-Mar-22 21:31:47

Lemon, sugar, golden syrup.

Don’t know if I’ll give anything up.

Sago Tue 01-Mar-22 22:28:05

KittyLester I stand corrected, it was Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent.
It probably felt like a fast day for me as I don’t like pancakes?

Juno56 Tue 01-Mar-22 22:44:05

I had lemon and sugar on mine, DH had maple syrup and squirty cream.
I don't give anything up; instead I choose a new charity at the beginning of Lent and support it for a year. This year it is Action Duchenne who support families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
